As a very first step for theorizing shopping, this study attempted to diagnose the current of shopping research. Using the keyword of shopping from major academic databases in Korea, the study collected 560 research articles and analyzed patterns of: 1) research by year, journal, and academic area; 2) researchers by academic area; 3) keywords; and 4) research contents. Analyses showed that two thirds of articles in shopping were published after 2000. While the number of journals was the highest in business and engineering, the numbers of articles and researchers were the highest in business and apparel. The most frequently used included internet shopping mall, internet shopping, and shopping orientation. About 66% of shopping research was internet shopping related, and 80% was empirical study using individual consumers. Though shopping was studied as an individual consumer behavior, there were noticeable patterns in research contents by academic field. The study discussed such patterns and provided implications for multidisciplinary approaches for shopping theory and research.

The acculturation of ethnic minorities is an increasingly important issue. This paper explores the role of two factors which may be related to Asian Americans' development of preferences for ethnic or non-ethnic shopping: level of acculturation and susceptibility to interpersonal influence. Several prior studies have found that strength of ethnic identification (a measure of level of acculturation) accounts for differences in consumption patterns among immigrant groups. The results of this study suggest that ethnic identification is not a unidimensional construct. Instead, two construct, ethnic identification and consumer socialization are found to be relatedto the level of influence exerted by culturally consistent in-group than "American." A strong positive relationship is found between ethnic identifi.cation and ethnocentric purchasing preferences. In contrast, no significant direct relationship between level of.consumer socialization and ethnocentric preferences is found. Implications for marketers are discussed.
Objectives: This study aims to explore consumer awareness and usage patterns of local food in Jecheon city during the COVID-19 pandemic, contributing to the establishment of the Jecheon City Food Plan. Methods: Surveys were conducted from July 24 to August 24, 2021, using a combination of web-link and self-administered methods for adults living in Jecheon city (n = 250). Descriptive analysis, t-test, importance and satisfaction analysis (ISA) of local food choice attributes were performed using SPSS Statistics. Results: Participants prioritized freshness when purchasing agricultural products. The freshness of Jecheon local food was the selection attribute with the highest consumer satisfaction and could provide purchase motivation. Approximately 73.6% of respondents understood the concept of local food, and 70% were familiar with Jecheon's local food. Notably, 94.8% expressed an intention to purchase but held negative views on selling local food in other areas. The need to increase the supply of local food to vulnerable populations and public school catering was highly recognized. The ISA identified 'affordable price', 'delivery service', and 'product information' as areas requiring improvement. On the other hand, 'freshness of products', 'quality for the price', and 'support for local farmers and economy' were identified as attributes to be maintained and strengthened. Conclusions: Consumers in Jecheon city recognized local foods as more than just 'consumer goods'. Our findings suggest the need for further research on local food revitalization and more comprehensive local food planning to enhance consumer satisfaction.
The objective of this study is to investigate consumer preferences, perception and consumption patterns for fish products. To investigate the difference in consumer responses according to the characteristics of the population parameters, data were collected from the survey of 404 Koreans and analyzed. The results are as follows: First, the differences of age; for the question of the reason why do you eat fish products, the younger generation (20~30s)'s most answer was 'The Taste' while the older age groups(40~50s and over 60s)' most respond was 'For Health'. Second, the differences of sex; women relatively considered 'The Quality' of fish products more important than men when selecting the products. Whereas, men thought 'The Taste' of fish products more important than women when they choose fish products. In addition, when the bad news or hygiene accidents about fish products are reported on media, women reacted more negatively for fish products purchase than men. Third, the differences of family members; the respondents who lived with 3 or more family members showed higher preference rates about purchasing trimmed fresh fish at the store than respondents who lived with 2 or less family members. On the other hand, single households relatively bought processed fish products and RTE(Ready To Eat) fish products more than other family member groups. In addition, single households preference rates about eating fish products as a main dish were very high compared to other groups.
The purpose of this study is to develop high-valued added socks by utilizing consumer design preference research in design. The study was performed by investigating literatures including previous studies, and researching the recognition and design preference of consumers. As a final step, socks designs were developed to reflect the results of the research. Gender differences have been found in the choice of socks. Women put more importance to the design, color and trend and prefer geometric, animals and plants patterns, and unique images compared to men. In terms of fashion interest level, 'high' group preferred design, color, and trend than 'middle' and 'low' group, and also preferred geometric, abstract patterns. Women's and unisex socks were designed for people in their 20s, the age group with the highest level of interest in fashion, after taking results of the consumer design preference research into account. Main themes for the lady's socks are 'Soft Shape' and 'Line Composition' in order to express delicate, soft sensibility. For the unisex socks, 'Daydreamer' and 'Free Zone' are the themes used to express young energy and the sense of freedom. 12 styles were developed by creating 3 styles per theme using Photoshop CS5 and Illustrator CS5 programs. As a result, it is confirmed that design strategies in segmented market are necessary for the high-valued added products. Also, the understanding of changes in consumer's tastes and needs through regular market research is needed for the competitive socks design planning.
This study is to analyze the differences of consumer preferences between the terrestrial DMB and satellite DMB in various segment groups by using survey data. We categorized the consumers by the DMB preference patterns into four groups, i.e., non users group, terrestrial only users group, satellite only users group, dual users group. And then we analyzed the differences among these four segment groups in demographic characteristics, behavior patterns on telecommunication and broadcasting services, life-style, attitudes to DMB services.

A "Showrooming" phenomenon has emerged due to the rapid growth of the on-line shopping market and is associated with consumer shopping patterns. This phenomenon is resulted in new strategies such as the Omni-Channel strategy that are now being employed by the off-line retail industry to meet the needs of consumers who seek information on-line. In particular, human services provided in department stores (which still occupy an important place in the off-line retail industry) are reaching limitations in the ability to maintain consumers. This study provides basic data for the Omni-Channel strategy of domestic department stores by researching and analyzing Omni-Channel strategy cases in Manhattan. This study dissects and analyzes the "Showrooming" phenomenon and the development of the Omni-Channel strategy through a literature review as well as analyzes the Omni-Channel success case of Macy's department store. The findings indicate that the use of the Omni-Channel strategy by Macy's department store has solved the problem of "Showrooming," by integrating on-line and off-line shopping to provide an efficient and convenient shopping experience for consumers. The Omni-Channel strategy offers a means for off-line stores to connect to the online shopping behavior of consumers. The results suggest the need for an organic combination of on-line and off-line distribution channels to adapt to changes in consumer shopping patterns due to a recession in the domestic market.
Objectives: In this paper, the survey on internet usage patterns of health consumers was conducted and analyzed in order to determine internet health information assessment criteria for providing correct consumer health information on web-sites. Methods: By using a survey questionnaire with 16 questions on general information and 20 questions on internet health information, data were collected from September 16 to 25, 2005 from 476 participants through an internet web site, http://www.hp.go.kr. Frequency analysis, t-test, and multiple regression were used in order to analyze the difference in assessment criteria, factors influencing assessment criteria, factors influencing user satisfaction, etc. Results: General characteristics of the study population were: the persons over age 40 were the smallest age group; women were accounted for 74.2%; and the persons with average income were the largest income group; and the persons with average health status were the largest health group. Most widely used health information were: exercise, disease, and diet, in order. There was significant difference(p=.001) in importance of assessment criteria between the persons in medical institutions and the persons not in medical institutions. There was no significant difference in other assessment criteria. We also found that contents of websites and easy to use were more important factors than elucidation of information providers and information sources including speciality of information in quality assessment criteria of internet health information. Discussion and Conclusion: Results of this paper were compared with the previous studies from the literatures. Contrary to the previous studies in the literature, there was significant difference in importance of assessment criteria between the persons in medical institutions and the persons not in medical institutions. In order to apply the study results to develop health contents for consumer, there is a need for further upgrade the proposed assessment criteria based on expert opinion.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Recent studies have reported chocolate consumption has beneficial effects on blood pressure, obesity, and dyslipidemia, which are components of metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, evidence regarding these relationships in Asia is limited. The aim of this study was to investigate relations between chocolate consumption and MetS in Korea. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Study subjects were 6,982 adults aged 19-64 years free of major chronic diseases that participated in the 2014-2016 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Information on chocolate consumption was obtained using food frequency questionnaires. For primary analysis, subjects were divided into two groups: non-consumer (n = 3,741, 53.6%); consumer (n = 3,241, 46.4%). In order to investigate dose-response effects on MetS, chocolate consumers were divided into quartiles based on amounts consumed: Q1 (n = 789, 24.3%); Q2 (n = 837, 25.8%); Q3 (n = 863, 26.6%); Q4 (n = 752, 23.2%) in second analysis. RESULTS: Chocolate consumers; 1) were more physically active(P < 0.0001); 2) less likely to smoke(P < 0.0001); 3) paid more attention to food nutrition labels (P < 0.0001), and 4) had healthier dietary patterns, that is, they consumed vegetables, fruits, and dairy products more frequently(P < 0.0001) than non-consumers. Furthermore, chocolate consumers had a 30% lower risk of MetS (odds ratio, 0.70; 95% confidence interval, 0.58-0.86; P = 0.0005). However, dose-response effects between chocolate intake and MetS was not found by secondary analysis after excluding non-consumers. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, chocolate consumers had healthier lifestyles and dietary patterns and a lower prevalence of MetS than non-consumers, as determined by our primary analysis. Although dose-response effects were not found to be significant among chocolate consumers during secondary analysis, the patterns were partially similar. This cross-sectional finding shows chocolate consumption does not increase the risk of MetS. The prospective studies and intervention trials in Korea are needed to confirm this cross-sectional finding.
When Korea's retail industry was liberalized, new store formats such as large discount stores and Super Supermarket(SSMs) have grown. New types of business have borne significant influence on traditional market. Traditional markets have been in gradual decline since they fail to meet to consumer's purchasing behavior. The South Korean government has been making sustained efforts to revitalize the modernization of traditional markets since 2004. This research is conducted to analyze how changes in the distribution of different types of distributors influence the consumer's purchasing behaviors depending on the changes in the market environment. The purpose of this research is to present a policy to invigorate consumer-oriented traditional markets by analyzing the consumption behavior among major retail channels at a point when competition among retail channels is becoming intensified. In order to examine the effect of the spatial competitive landscape among major retail channels on consumption behavior, an empirical analysis was conducted with 613 consumers in 6 cities nationwide, using the multiple regression model. This research identified three main areas of factors. The analysis result indicates that the physical factor (time required to go to the traditional market), socioeconomic factors (the number of vehicles owned and average monthly income), and competitive factors (intensity of competition in spatial locations and average monthly spending in supermarkets) have significant influence on consumption patterns of consumers. The findings present that the Korean government should go ahead with policies aimed to revitalize traditional markets, keeping in mind the factors that influence the consumption patterns of customers based on these results. We propose that the policy supporting traditional markets need to be a customized-strategy, considering traditional market's characteristic.
