  • This study aims to develop a performance evaluation system for the Construction Factory(CF). The CF is a kind of full automation system for building construction which consists of the lifting system for building materials, the built-up unit for steel structural components, the bolting robots, the control center for the site management, and the site covering system. The CF is developing now as a project of the construction automation and robotics. In this study we firstly reviewed the state-of-the-art of the construction automation and robotics in the foreign and the domestic, and investigated the precedent case of the CF such as the SMART System of Shimizu Co., Japan. We believe that without an objective evaluation of the results there won't be growth in technological R&D. Therefore, this study sees the developing CF as an new technology and method in building construction, and proposes the direction and frame of the appropriate evaluation which can be applied into the CF.

  • Recently, the trend in architectural forms has been toward taller and larger building. The building materials, therefore, are getting larger and heavier as wall. Most of the construction projects are, however, dependent on outdated equipment and human resources. Construction processes up to now face a number of problems, including dangerous work, high construction cost and heterogeneous construction quality. In various construction sites, automation in construction has been introduced to address these problems. This paper proposes a human-machine cooperative system in the construction site; the system utilizes construction of a curtain wall in tall buildings. The use of automation system at construction sites can reduce the need of human involvement. Construction time and cost can be reduced as well. The most important aspect of the use of automation system at construction sites is prevention of accidents.

  • Since most of the industries have adopted automation system, the industrial disaster has been declined sharply. Also automation system has offered many benefits such as productivity and assured quality. However, the construction industry is still relying on man power and because of this there are many victims occurring due to the industrial disaster. Construction industry has to overcome uncertainty of incidents and changing natural surroundings to actualize automation. Therefore, the efficient working plan and intelligent decision making process are needed to run more developed techniques and automations. Specially to decline the rate of industrial accidents occurred in basic construction in earth work, the automation via excavator is necessary and also the development of planning process system is too. This research is to establish Task Planning System to prevent disaster which is used for planning automated earth work.

  • Due to its high dependency of manpower, construction work has several difficulties in terms of quality control, imbalance of supply and demand of qualified manpower, safety management for them and improvement of production. Such problems related to the management can be at some degree solved by introducing an automation facility. Since the unique environment of a construction site in the past was not structured, it is very hard to introduce a facility to automate construction work from operation of the equipment to assignment of where to work. This is a preliminary research for automation of construction work. In this study, the trend of development of a cutting-edge technology, RTLS, was researched and analyzed in order to review the possibility of utilizing RTLS in construction work and present a control mechanism for construction equipment. Although the presented mechanism is at the concept stage, which still has lots of restrictions to be solved, the application of the RTLS will be very much feasible. That is, if linkage of the study between the RTLS and the automation of construction is built, it will be expected to contribute to many fields such as cost reduction through efficient and systemic management, the reduction of construction period and precise construction as well as raising the level of the automation of domestic construction work.

A new advanced system, Robot-based Construction Automation (RCA) system, is currently being developed. To accomplish RCA system effectively, Design for automation (DFA) should be performed in automation system developing phase. The performance criteria of this system are a major cause of design changes. It is required exhaustive review for development new system. This research analyzed the design changes of Climbing Hydraulic Robot system and Construction Factory (CF), being currently developed in the field of applied RCA systems. And the design change matters according to performance criteria in each system's design-by-step were analyzed. The purpose of this research is developing the performance criteria in the developing phase of RCA system, and then will be served as basis for system design in similar projects.

  • This paper describes an automation of architectural design processes and the direction between this automation and robotic system in building construction using the concept of the object-oriented design in architecture. The research starts from the premise that many computer-aided design systems are mostly aimed at serving as drawing tools which are used only after a design formal solution has already been established by the architect. If the computer is well applied to the architectural design process, many positive things such as standardization of design detail, increasing productivity and collaboration, minimizing construction costs etc. can be done. To support an early design solution in the computer-based environment, the proposed automation was developed and tested in a real building project, using the object-oriented design concept such as product model. This design automation gives various design alternatives from the early design phase to the final stage of design details, according to musical harmony. This paper shows how architectural design process can be automated and how the data of the applied architectural design can be integrated into product model environment, in relation to robotic system in building construction.

  • This paper presents the core technology of Construction Business Process Automation to model and automate construction business processes. Business Process Reengineering (BPR) and Automation (BPA) have been recognized as one of the important aspects in construction business management. However, BPR requires a lot of efforts to identify, document, implement, execute, maintain, and keep track thousands of business processes to deliver a project. Moreover, existing BPA technologies used in existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems do not lend themselves to effective scalability for construction business process management. Application of Workflow and Object Technologies would be quite effective in implementing a scalable enterprise application for construction community. This paper present the technologies and methodologies for automating construction business processes by addressing how: 1) Automated construction management tasks are developed as software components, 2) The process modeling is facilitated by dragging-and dropping task components in a network, 3) Raising business requests and instantiating corresponding process instances are delivered, and 4) Business process instances are executed by using workflow technology based on real-time simulation engine. This paper presents how the construction business process automation is achieved by using equipment reservation and cancellation processes simplified intentionally.

  • Denoising, registering, and detecting changes of 3D digital map are generally conducted by skilled technicians, which leads to inefficiency and the intervention of individual judgment. The manual post-processing for analyzing 3D point cloud data of construction sites requires a long time and sufficient resources. This study develops automation technology for analyzing 3D point cloud data for construction sites. Scanned data are automatically denoised, and the denoised data are stored in a specific storage. The stored data set is automatically registrated when the data set to be registrated is prepared. In addition, regions with non-homogeneous densities will be converted into homogeneous data. The change detection function is developed to automatically analyze the degree of terrain change occurred between time series data.
