Wet porous media representing agronomic soil that contains variable water content with variable electrolyte concentration was measured to study the shape of the curves of the electric double layer capacitance versus frequency (from 10 KHz to 10 MHz. This was done in an attempt to find the lowest practical operating frequency for developing low cost dielectric constant soil moisture probes. Cellulose sponge was used as the porous media. A high frequency electronic bridge circuit was developed for measuring the equivalent network parallel resistance and capacitance of porous media. It appears that the effects of the electric double layer component of the total parallel network capacitance essentially disappear at operating frequencies greater than approximately 25 MHz at low electrolyte concentrations but are still important at 50 MHz at higher concentrations. At these frequencies, the double layer capacitance masks the diffusion region capacitance where true water content capacitance values reside. The general shape of the curve of volumetric water content versus porous media dielectric constant is presented, with an empirical equation representing data for this type of curve. It was concluded that the lowest frequency where dielectric constant values which represent true water content information will most likely be found is between 30 and 50 MHz at low electrolyte concentrations but may be above 50 MHz when the total electrolyte concentration is near the upper level required for most mesophyte plant nutrition.
The static tensile tests of GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK were made on the plain and notched specimens at room temperature. The results were discussed based on linear notch mechanics which was proposed by H.Nistani. The fracture of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRID300 and CFRPEEK specimens is controlled by the elastic maximum stress, $({\sigma}_max)$, and the notch root racius,$\rho$, alone, independently of the other geometrical conditions. The relation between fracture nominal stress,$({\sigma}_max)$, and stress concentration factor, $K_t$ and a part where $({\sigma}_c)$ is nearly constant independent of $K_t$. A similar phenomenon can be seen in the fatigue tests of notched specimes under rotating bending or push-pull. The almost constant $({\sigma}_c)$ values correspond to the nearly constant apparent stress intensity factor, $K_{1pc}$ values, obtained by assuming ,$\rho$=0. This can be attributed to the existence of the stable crack. Linear notch mechanics is very useful for analyzing the static tensile fracture behavior of notched GFRP, ID300, CFRPEEK specimens.
The structureal, dielectric and piezoelectric properties of Pb[(Sb$\_$1/2/Nb$\_$1/2/)$\_$x/-(Ni$\_$1/3/Nb$\_$2/3/)$\_$0.15-x/-(Zr$\_$y/Ti$\_$1-y/)$\_$0.85/]O$_3$(x=0∼0.05, y=0.47∼0.52) ceramics were investigated with the substitution of Pb(Sb$\_$1/2/Nb$\_$1/2/)O$_3$(abbreviated PSN) and the Zr/Ti ratio. At Zr/Ti ratio of 50/50, tetragonality was decreased and grain size abruptly decreased with the increase of PSN substitution. Curie temperature was decreased and dielectric constant increased with the substitution of PSN. The coercive field increased and remnant polarization decreased with the substitution of PSN. Electromechanical coupling factor(k$\_$p/) showed the highest value of 0.622 at 1mol% PSN, but mechanical quality factor(Q$\_$m/) showed the minimum value at that composition. Dielectric constant and electromechanical coupling factor with the Zr/Ti ratio showed maximum values at Zr/Ti ratio of 50/50 and mechanical quality factor showed minimum values near the Zr/Ti ratio of 50/50.
Complex permittivity spectra of Allyl Chloride (AC), 2-Butanone (2-BU) and their binary mixtures over the entire range of concentration were obtained using the Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technique in microwave frequency range at various temperatures. Static dielectric constant and relaxation time are obtained from complex permittivity spectra. Density ($\rho$) and refractive index ($n_D$) are also measured. These parameters are used to determine excess dielectric constant, excess inverse relaxation time, excess molar volume, excess molar refraction, polarity, Bruggeman factor and thermodynamic parameters viz. enthalpy of activation and entropy of activation. The values of static dielectric constant and relaxation time increases while density and refractive index decreases with the percentage of 2-Butanone in Allyl Chloride increases. Excess parameters were fitted to a Redlich-Kister equation.
The common accelerated life test(ALT) consists of test methods applying a constant stress, higher than the use condition stress, to items. There we, however, situations for which a progressive stress ALT, in which the stress on a test item is continuously increased with time, Is more convenient to perform testing and simpler in analyzing data than a constant stress ALT. When a product under constant stress s follows a Weibull distribution with parameters $\theta$(5) and $\beta$, maximum likelihood(ML) estimators of parameters involved in the model are obtained and their asymptotic distributions are derived under stress bounded ramp tests in which the stress is increased linearly from use condition stress to the stress upper bound. The optimum test plans are also found which minimize the asymptotic variance of the ML estimator of the log mean life at design constant stress. For selected values of the design parameters, tables useful for finding optimal test plans are given. The effect of the pre-estimates of design parameters is studied.
The Ni-MgO composites were prepared by coprecipitation of NiO-MgO solid solutions and their selective reduction in a hydrogen atmosphere. We report on the measurements of both ac conductivity $\sigma$ ($\omega$, f) and dielectric constant $textsc{k}$'($\omega$, f) for the Ni-MgO composites in the frequency range from 10 Hz to 10 MHz at room temperature. The frequency exponents of conductivity and dielectric constant, x and y, are found to be x=0.98$\pm$0.05 and y=0.05$\pm$0.01. These results are in good agreement with a general scaling relation $\chi$-y=1, although these values are different from the theoretical predications. The dielectric constant exponent ($textsc{k}$' f-fc -s) is found to be s=0.62$\pm$0.07 with estimated percolation threshold fc=0.20$\pm$0.02.
In this paper, the dependence of piezoelectric properties in the 0-3 composite system of piezoelectric-ceramics polymer materials on particle size of ceramics were investigated. Radial mode and thickness mode of composite were observed similar to single phase of piezoelectric ceramics. The measured values of dielectric constant and dissipation factor were dependent on particle size, which increased with the increasing particle size. the planar coupling factor, thickness coupling factor and thickness frequency constant with the particle size were almost constant, while planar frequency constant increased. The thickness coupling factor decreased with the increasing thickness of specimen. It is found that maximum voltage coeffidient was calculated on the specimen with particle size smallar than 46 ${\mu}m$.
The effects of MgO addition on thermal expansiion coefficient and dielectric constant of mullite were studied. Thermal coefficient and dielectric constant decrease with increasing MgO content and exhibit a minimum value at 1wt% MgO. However, above 3wt% MgO content both values increase. Result of X-ray diffraction analysis how that mullite compositions which include more than 0.1wt% MgO form cordierite. Spinel is also formed as well as cordierite in the composition containing more than 3wt% MgO. The results indicate that addition of MgO affect the thermal expansion coefficient and dielectric constant of mullite substrate because of the formation of new phases; cordierite and spinel. The thermal expansion coefficient and dielectric constant are affected mainly by cordierite and spinel in the regions containing less than more than 3wt% MgO, respectively.
Ferroelectric $Pb_2(Sc,Nb)O_6$ were prepared under two different sintering conditions using the oxide mixing method and the electrical properties were measured. The sintering conditions were $1350^{\circ}C$ for 25 minutes and $1400^{\circ}C$ for 20 minutes. EDX spectroscopy and XRD were used to determine the crystalline characteristic of the $Pb_2(Sc,Nb)O_6$ compositions Pyrochlore phase showed about 2% in all $Pb_2(Sc,Nb)O_6$ specimens. It expands the growth of crystals in samples sintered at $1400^{\circ}C$ than $1350^{\circ}C$, but all samples were the optimal crystallization. The temperature and frequency dependence of the complex dielectric constant and admittance were measured to analyze the electrical properties. The high dielectric constant of the specimens reflects the good stoichiometry and crystallization. The maximum value of the dielectric constant in the two specimens treated with sintering at $1350^{\circ}C$ and $1400^{\circ}C$ were more than 27,000, and the dielectric loss at room temperature is smaller than 0.05. The maximum dielectric constant decreased with increasing frequency, the transition temperature also increased in $Pb_2(Sc,Nb)O_6$ compositions. The admittance and susceptance values reach a peak at all temperatures, and the magnitude of the peak increases with increasing measuring temperature. Strong frequency dependent of maximum admittance, susceptance, dielectric constant and dielectric loss were observed.
In this paper, we propose a new detector based on the median-shift sign. We call it the median-shift sign (MSS) detector, which is an extension of the classical sign detector. We first analyze the problem of detecting a dc signal in noise of known probability density function (pdf). The MSS detector with the optimum median-shift value, the optimum MSS detector, performs better than the sign detector in Gaussian noise: it has the best performance among the detectors compared in Laplacian and Cauchy noise. It is shown that the MSS detectors with constant median-shift values are nearly equal to the optimum MSS detector. We also analyze the problem of detecting a dc signal when only partial information is available on the noise. The MSS detectors with constant median-shift values are almost equal to the sign detector in Gaussian noise: they perform better than the sign and Wilcoxon detectors for most signal ranges in Laplacian and Cauchy noise.
