  • A series of the studies on the applied physical properties of main domestic species have been conducted last three years. Equilibrium moisture content(EMC) of Pinus koraiensis, Larix kaemferi, Pinus koraiensis were investigated. The experiments for sorption property were conducted with 20- and 80-mesh wood powder and resulted in their EMC's at various sorption conditions. Amount of moisture sorption and sorption speed of Larix kaemferi were shown the most large values and very fast among three Korean main coniferous wood.

  • Mt. paektu(altitude 2,749.6m) is ecologically important because successional processes following volcanic eurption are quite clear. We investigated plant communities with altitude know vertical distribution of plant vegetation on the north-western slope of Mt. paektu was divided into five parts; the pine-hardwood forest zone(600∼1,000m alt.), the lower coniferous forest zone (1,000∼1,500 m alt.), the upper coniferous forest and birch forest zone(1,500∼2,000 m alt.), the alpine shrub zone(2,000∼2,500 m alt.) and the alpine meadow zone(2,500∼2,749 m alt.). In particular, the alpine zone was divided into alpine shrub and alpine meadow zones and distributed up to 2,500m alt. these results reflet the adaptations of these shrubs at this altitude. But these shrubby communities disappeared on the alpinemeadow zone. In the alpine meadow zone above than 2,500m alt., some meadows, papaver radicatum var pscudoradicatum. bistorta ochotensis, chrysathemum zawadskii var. latilobum etc., were occured.

  • Occurrence and distribution of the celluar slime molds in relation to the coastal plant communities of svven islands near inch'on wereinvestigated. as a results, total seven species were isolated from the soils of the coastal plant communities. These are dictyostelium mucoroides, polysphodylium pallidum, dictystelium polycephalum. d. mucoroides was the most commonly found in the coastal plant communities investigated, and was dominant pecularly in the coastal mixed forests, the coastal broad-leaved forests and salt marshes. In the coastal coniferous forest and the coastal dune sand plants, hoeever, p. violaceum was the dominant species. species diversity was relatively was relatively high in the coastal coniferous ferests and the coastal mixed forests. However, agerage number of species isolated from all plant communities was very low,2.8.

  • Fungal endophytes are microfungi that live in plants without causing apparent symptoms of infection. This study was conducted to identify endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of coniferous trees in Bohyeon Mountain of Korea. We collected leaves of two species of coniferous trees, Pinus densiflora and Pinus koraiensis, from 11 sites in the study area. A total 58 isolates were obtained and identified using molecular and morphological characteristics. Four species of endophytic fungi were isolated from P. densiflora: Lophodermium conigenum, Leotiomycetes sp., Septoria pini-thunbergii, and Polyporales sp., while two fungal species were isolated from P. koraiensis: Eurotiomycetes sp. and Rhytismataceae sp. The most frequently isolated species were L. conigenum and S. pini-thunbergii.

  • This study was conducted from February 2005 to October 2007 to investigate bird distribution at three types of forest (mixed, broadleaf and coniferous) in Gwangneung forest. As a result, more birds used mixed forests than broodleaf and coniferous forest. During forest was opened to public, more birds also frequently used mixed forests. When forest was closed to public, there was no preference among three forest types. We also compared the number of species and individuals between open and restricted area. More species and individuals used restricted area.

  • The floristic composition of the Korean-fir(Abies koreana Wilson) forest on Mt. Halla in Cheju Island, Korea, was described and some other phytosociological features were noted. The dense tree layer of the Abies koreana forest under consideration attained a height of no more than 5-7m. The shrub layer was 1.2-2m high and usually inconspicuous, while the herb layer, 0.3-0.5m high, was remarkable. The forest contained a number of species which are characteristic of the subalopine coniferous in Japan, particularly that in Hokkaido. Moreover, the specific synchronized regeneration called wave-regeneration was found in the forest on Mt. Halla at several sites even though the data on this phenomenon do not present in the present report.

  • The small-scale dynamic of moth populations in spring was examined in a coniferous forest of southwestern Korea. Moths were collected with one 22-watt light trap for 29 days in April 2007. A total of 450 individuals of 38 species in 5 families were collected. The most abundant species was an epiplemid moth, Epiplema plagifera. The relationship between these dominant moths and their host plants is briefly discussed. We also examined influence of weather factors on the number of species and individuals collected. Multiple regression analyses showed that the two-day temperature difference explained 18% of the variance in the number of species collected, while air and ground temperatures explained 51% of the variance in the log-transformed number of individuals collected. This suggests that temperature affects local population sizes in spring, but variables other than weather may also affect the diversity of local moth populations.

  • We investigated the biodiversity of endophytic fungi isolated from leaves of three coniferous species (Pinus densiflora, P. koraiensis, Larix kaempferi) on Mt. Minjuji, Korea. A total of 39 isolates were discovered from 17 host plants and their homology with the ITS region was searched. They were then identified as 22 taxa; 64% of fungal isolates belong to Sordariomyetes, 33% of isolates to Leotiomycetes, and 3% isolates to Agaricomycetes.

  • The study of standing crop of the ground vegetation under the coniferous stands was pursuited in regard of soil nutrients at Kwangnung plantation from May to Octoher, 1971 and 1991. The coniferous stands implied pine and larch associations of which the young stands of each as-sociation were 9~12 years and the older one 40~70 years. The larch stands were more plentiful in species than in the pine stands and the Festuca ovina and Oplismenus burmannii each were dominant species of pine and larch stands. The standing crop of pine stands is from 98.02g /$m^2$ to 385.32g /$m^2$ The standing crops of those stands showed great increase from June to August when the air temperature and rainfall were fairly high. The standing crop has correlation to total nitrogen and organic matter in the soil.

  • This study confirmed the usefulness of short-wavelength infrared (SWIR) in the discrimination and classification of evergreen forest types. A forested area near Hisayama and Sasaguri in Fukuoka Prefecture, Japan, served as the study area. Warm-temperate forest vegetation dominates the study site vegetation. Coniferous plantation forest, natural broad-leaved forest, and bamboo forest were analyzed using LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR remote sensing data. Samples were extracted for the three forest types, and reflectance factors were compared for each band. Kappa coefficients of various band combinations were also compared by classification accuracy. For the LANDSAT5/TM data observed in April, October, and November, Bands 5 and 7 showed significant differences between bamboo, broad-leaved, and coniferous forests. The same significant difference was not recognized in the visible or near-infrared regions. Classification accuracy, determined by supervised classification, indicated distinct improvements in band combinations with SWIR, as compared to those without SWIR. Similar results were found for both LANDSAT5/TM and SPOT4/HRVIR data. This study identified obvious advantages in using SWIR data in forest-type discrimination and classification.
