This article is dedicated to predict the natural frequencies of joined conical shell structures made of Functionally Graded Material (FGM). The structure includes two conical segments. The equivalent material properties are found by using the rule of mixture based on Voigt model. In addition, three well-known patterns are employed for distribution of material properties throughout the thickness of the structure. The main objective of the present research is to propose a novel exponential pattern and obtain the related equivalent material properties. Furthermore, the Donnell type shell theory is used to obtain the governing equations of motion. Note that these equations are obtained by employing First-order Shear Deformation Theory (FSDT). In order to discretize the governing system of differential equations, well-known and efficient semi-analytical scheme, namely Generalized Differential Quadrature Method (GDQM), is utilized. Different boundary conditions are considered for various types of single and joined conical shell structures. Moreover, an applicable modification is considered for the continuity conditions at intersection position. In the first step, the proposed formulation is verified by solving some well-known benchmark problems. Besides, some new numerical examples are analyzed to show the accuracy and high capability of the suggested technique. Additionally, several geometric and material parameters are studied numerically.
Conical shell is a common engineering structure, which is widely used in machinery, civil and construction fields. Most of them are usually exposed to external environments, temperature is an important factor affecting its performance. If the external temperature is too high, the deformation of the conical shell will occur, leading to a decrease in stability. Therefore, studying the thermal-post buckling behavior of conical shells is of great significance. This article takes graphene platelets reinforced metal foams (GPLRMF) conical shells as the research object, and uses high-order shear deformation theory (HSDT) to study the thermal post-buckling behaviors. Based on general variational principle, the governing equation of a GPLRMF conical shell is deduced, and discretized and solved by Galerkin method to obtain the critical buckling temperature and thermal post-buckling response of conical shells under various influencing factors. Finally, the effects of cone angles, GPLs distribution types, GPLs mass fraction, porosity distribution types and porosity coefficient on the thermal post-buckling behaviors of conical shells are analyzed in detail. The results show that the cone angle has a significant impact on the nonlinear thermal stability of the conical shells.
In this paper, magneto-thermo-elastic problem of a thick truncated conical shell immersed in a uniform magnetic field and subjected to internal pressure is investigated. Material properties of the shell including the elastic modulus, magnetic permeability, coefficients of thermal expansion and conduction are assumed to be isotropic and graded through the thickness obeying the simple power law distribution, while the poison's ratio is assumed to be constant. The temperature distribution is assumed to be a function of the thickness direction. Governing equations of the truncated conical shell are derived in terms of components of displacement and thermal fields and discretised with the help of differential quadrature (DQ) method. Results are obtained for different values of power law index of material properties and effects of thermal load on displacement, stress, temperature and magnetic fields are studied. Results of the present method are compared with those of the finite element method.
A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the natural frequencies of a truncated shallow and deep conical shell with linearly varying thickness along the meridional direction free at its top edge and clamped at its bottom edge. Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D), the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_r$, $u_{\theta}$, and $u_z$ in the radial, circumferential, and axial directions, respectively, are taken to be periodic in ${\theta}$ and in time, and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Strain and kinetic energies of the truncated conical shell with variable thickness are formulated, and the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated. The frequencies from the present 3-D method are compared with those from other 3-D finite element method and 2-D shell theories.
This paper deals with the free vibrations of conical shells with linearly variable thickness by the transfer influence coefficient method. The classical thin shell theory based upon the Flugge theory is assumed and the governing equations of a conical shell are written as a coupled set of first order matrix differential equations using the transfer matrix. The Runge-Kutta-Gill integration method is used to solve the governing differential equation. The natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes are calculated numerically for the conical shells with linearly variable thickness and various boundary conditions at the edges. The present method is applied to conical shells with linearly varying thickness, and the effects of the semi-vertex angle, the number of circumferential waves and thickness ratio on vibration are studied.
This study deals with the nonlinear static analysis of functionally graded carbon nanotubes reinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) truncated conical shells subjected to axial load based on the classical shell theory. Detailed studies for both nonlinear buckling and post-buckling behavior of truncated conical shells. The truncated conical shells are reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes which alter according to linear functions of the shell thickness. The nonlinear equations are solved by both the Airy stress function and Galerkin method based on the classical shell theory. In numerical results, the influences of various types of distribution and volume fractions of carbon nanotubes, geometrical parameters, elastic foundations on the nonlinear buckling and post-buckling behavior of FG-CNTRC truncated conical shells are presented. The proposed results are validated by comparing with other authors.
Shell foundations have been employed as an alternative for the conventional flat shallow foundations and have proven to provide economical advantage. They have shown considerably improved performance in terms of ultimate capacity and settlement characteristics. However, despite conical shell foundations are frequently used in industry, the theoretical solutions for bearing capacity of these footings are available for only triangular shell strip foundations. The benefits in design aspects can be achieved through theoretical solutions considering shell geometry. The engineering behavior of a conical shell foundation on mixed soils was investigated experimentally and theoretically in this study. The failure mechanism was obtained by conducting laboratory model tests. Based on that, the theoretical solution of bearing capacity was developed and validated with experimental results, in terms of the internal angle of the cone. In comparison to the circular flat foundation, the results show 15% increase of ultimate load and 51% decrease of settlement at an angle of intersection of $120^{\circ}$. Based on the results, the design chart of modified bearing capacity coefficients for conical shell foundation is proposed.
A three-dimensional (3-D) method of analysis is presented for determining the free vibration frequencies and mode shapes of thick, complete (not truncated) conical shells of revolution, Unlike conventional shell theories, which are mathematically two-dimensional (2-D). the present method is based upon the 3-D dynamic equations of elasticity. Displacement components $u_{r},\;u_{z},\;and\;u_{\theta}$ in the radial, axial, and circumferential directions, respectively, are taken to be sinusoidal in time, periodic in , and algebraic polynomials in the r and z directions. Potential (strain) and kinetic energies of the conical shells are formulated, the Ritz method is used to solve the eigenvalue problem, thus yielding upper bound values of the frequencies by minimizing the frequencies. As the degree of the polynomials is increased, frequencies converge to the exact values. Convergence to four-digit exactitude is demonstrated for the first five frequencies of theconical shells. Novel numerical results are presented for thick, complete conical shells of revolution based upon the 3-D theory. Comparisons are also made between the frequencies from the present 3-D Ritz method and a 2-D thin shell theory.
In this research, the dynamic stability of an orthotropic elastic conical shell, with elasticity moduli and density varying in the thickness direction, subject to a uniform external pressure which is a power function of time, has been studied. After giving the fundamental relations, the dynamic stability and compatibility equations of a nonhomogeneous elastic orthotropic conical shell, subject to a uniform external pressure, have been derived. Applying Galerkin's method, these equations have been transformed to a pair of time dependent differential equations with variable coefficients. These differential equations are solved using the method given by Sachenkov and Baktieva (1978). Thus, general formulas have been obtained for the dynamic and static critical external pressures and the pertinent wave numbers, critical time, critical pressure impulse and dynamic factor. Finally, carrying out some computations, the effects of the nonhomogeneity, the loading speed, the variation of the semi-vertex angle and the power of time in the external pressure expression on the critical parameters have been studied.
Generally, methods using transfer techniques, like the transfer matrix method and the transfer stiffness coefficient method, find natural frequencies using the sign change of frequency determinants in searching frequency region. However, these methods may omit some natural frequencies when the initial frequency interval is large. The Sylvester-transfer stiffness coefficient method ("S-TSCM") can always obtain all natural frequencies in the searching frequency region even though the initial frequency interval is large. Because the S-TSCM obtain natural frequencies using the number of natural frequencies existing under a searching frequency. In this paper, the algorithm for the free vibration analysis of axisymmetric conical shells was formulated with S-TSCM. The effectiveness of S-TSCM was verified by comparing numerical results of S-TSCM with those of other methods when analyzing free vibration in two computational models: a truncated conical shell and a complete (not truncated) conical shell.
