  • The optimization of the specifications of vertical silicon on insulator (SOI) slot optical waveguides suitable for integrated-optical biochemical sensors was performed through computational analysis of the confinement factor of the guided mode distributed in the slot in addition to analytical examination of the TE mode. The optimized specifications were confirmed based on sensitivity in terms of the change in the refractive index of the biochemical analyte. When the slot width, rail width, and height were set to 120 nm, 200 nm, and 320 nm, respectively, the confinement factor was evaluated to be about 56% and the sensitivity was at least 0.9 [RIU/nm].

  • Lateral pressure plays a significant role in the stress-strain relationship of compressed concrete. Concrete's internal cracking resistance, ultimate strain, and axial strength are improved by confinement. This phenomenon influences the nonlinear behavior of reinforced concrete columns. Utilizing behavior factors to predict the nonlinear seismic responses of structures is prevalent in seismic codes, and this factor plays a vital role in the seismic responses of structures. This study aims to evaluate the confining action on the behavior factor of reinforced concrete moment resisting frames (RCMRFs) with shear walls (SWRCMRFs). To this end, a diverse range of mid-rise SW-RCMRFs was initially designed based on the Iranian national building code criteria. Second, the stress-strain curve of each element was modeled twice, both with and without the confinement phenomenon. Each frame was then subjected to pushover analysis. Finally, the analytical behavior factors of these frames were computed and compared to the Iranian seismic code behavior factor. The results demonstrate that confining action increased the behavior factors of SW-RCMRFs by 7-12%.

  • Numerical analysis was performed using FIMMWAVE to optimize the specifications of Si3N4/SiO2 slot and ridge-slot optical waveguides based on confinement factor and effective mode area. The optimized specifications were confirmed based on sensitivity in terms of the refractive index of the analyte. The specifications of the slot optical waveguide, i.e., the width of the slot and the width and height of the rails, were optimized to 0.2 ㎛, 0.46 ㎛, and 0.5 ㎛ respectively. When the wavelength was 1.55 ㎛ and the refractive index of the slot was 1.3, the confinement factor and effective mode area of 0.2024 and 2.04 ㎛2, respectively, were obtained based on the optimized specifications. The thickness of the ridge and the refractive index of the slot were set to 0.04 ㎛ and 1.1, respectively, to optimize the ridge-slot optical waveguide, and the confinement factor and effective mode area were calculated as 0.1393 and 2.90 ㎛2, respectively. When the confinement coefficient and detection degree of the two structures were compared in the range of 1 to 1.3 of the analyte index, it was observed that the confinement coefficient and sensitivity were higher in the ridge-slot optical waveguide in the region with a refractive index less than 1.133, but the reverse situation occurred in the other region. Therefore, in the implementation of the integrated optical biochemical sensor, it is possible to propose a selection criterion for the two parameters depending on the value of the refractive index of the analyte.

  • A great level of strength and deformability on compressive zone of RC wall is essentially required when subjected to high axial and in-plane lateral loading due to earthquakes. One of the best ways to handle this situation is to provide the confinement effectiveness to the compressive zone by reinforcing steel. For this a series of design charts were constructed to evaluate the confinement effectiveness for a given steel configuration in accordance with a well-known model and part of them are presented in this paper. Using the chart, designers can choose a desirable steel arrangement in flexural compressive zone of RC walls for a prescribed confinement factor.

  • Systematic studies for the effect of the linewidth enhancement factor, the confinement factor, the internal loss and the cavity length on the single mode gain difference and the frequency detuning are performed for $\lambda$/4 phase shifted DFB lasers above threshold. The above threshold characteristics are mainly determined by the linewidth enhancement factor, not by the confinement factor or the parameter defined by the product of the linewidth enhancement factor and the confinement factor. The normalized internal loss defined by the product of the internal loss and the cavity length mainly determines the above threshold characteristics compared to that of the internal loss or the cavity length alone. The effect of the cavity length on threshold characteristics is larger than that of the internal loss in the case of the same normalized internal loss. The above threshold characteristics of quantum well lasers are more resistant to the variations of the confinement factor and the normalized internal loss than those of bulk lasers due to the small linewidth enhancement factor.

  • This paper investigates the effects of confinement reinforcement and concrete strength on nonlinear behaviour of reinforced concrete buildings (RC). For numerical application, an eleven-storey and four bays reinforced concrete frame building is selected. Nonlinear incremental static (pushover) analyses of the building are performed according to various concrete strengths and whether appropriate confinement reinforcement, which defined in Turkish seismic code, exists or not at structural elements. In nonlinear analysis, distributed plastic hinge model is used. As a result of analyses, capacity curves of the frame building and moment-rotation curves at lower end sections of ground floor columns are determined. These results are compared with each other according to concrete strength and whether appropriate confinement reinforcement exists or not, respectively. According to results, it is seen that confinement reinforcement is important factor for increasing of building capacity and decreasing of rotations at structural elements.

  • Confinement of charge carrier and exciton is the essential factor for enhancing the efficiency and stability of the electrophosphorescent devices. The interplay between the properties of emitters and other adjacent layers are studied based on the physical interpretation with difference of energy level, charge carrier mobility, and corresponding charge-trapping behavior.

  • Seismic design of reinforced concrete (RC) structures requires a certain minimum level of flexural ductility. For example, Eurocode EN1998-1 directly specifies a minimum flexural ductility for RC beams, while Chinese code GB50011 limits the equivalent rectangular stress block depth ratio at peak resisting moment to achieve a certain nominal minimum flexural ductility indirectly. Although confinement is effective in improving the ductility of RC beams, most design codes do not provide any guidelines due to the lack of a suitable theory. In this study, the confinement for desirable flexural ductility performance of both normal- and high-strength concrete beams is evaluated based on a rigorous full-range moment-curvature analysis. An effective strategy is proposed for flexural ductility design of RC beams taking into account confinement. The key parameters considered include the maximum difference of tension and compression reinforcement ratios, and maximum neutral axis depth ratio at peak resisting moment. Empirical formulae and tables are then developed to provide guidelines accordingly.

  • The effect of the specifications of a silicon-on-insulator vertical slot optical waveguide on the sensitivity of homogeneous and surface sensing configurations for TE and TM polarization, respectively, was systematically analyzed using numerical software. The specifications were optimized based on the confinement factor and transmission power of the TE-guided mode distributed in the slot. The waveguide sensitivities of homogeneous and surface sensing were calculated according to the specifications of the optimized slot optical waveguide.

  • In this study, an experimental investigation of the strength of R/C columns with 300mm square sections confined by head anchorage bar is presented. This initial phase of research considers only axial loading and consists of a total of 7 column tests. The main variables are distance and anchorage type of transverse reinforcement such as standard hooks and headed bar. The purpose of this study is to investigate the confinement effect and strength increment by head and to propose the confinement model for column using the head at end of lateral tie. Also, the test results for ultimate strength and strength gain factor of columns in this study and previous study is compared with the existing analytical models. Based on the test results, the Saatcioglu's model estimates confinement effects was closed to experimental value and the developed analytical approach considered the head was capable of predicting the strength gain factor results with a resonable accuracy.
