  • Background: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of insoles on the plantar pressure distribution during squat exercise in subjects with calf muscle shortness. Design: Cross-sectional Study Methods: Thirty subjects were participated in each fifteen subjects of a control group and an experimental group with calf muscle shortness. The participants were allocated in control group or experimental group according to knee-to-wall test. They were asked to perform squat exercise at hip flexion angle of 20° and knee flexion angle of 45° across three conditions with insole(2.0cm and 3.5cm) and without insole. The plantar pressure distribution was measured using Pedoscan equipment. In order to find out whether there is a significant difference in the plantar pressure distribution between the groups and the height, the two-way mixed ANOVA test was used and the statistical significance level was .05. Results: As a result of the study, the plantar pressure distribution between the group and the height showed a significant interaction effect(p<.001). There was no significant difference according to the insole height of 2.0cm and 3.5cm in all the control groups and the experimental group. Conclusion: We found that the plantar pressure distribution shifted backward during squat exercise by wearing the insole to subjects with shortening of the calf muscle. We suggest that wearing an appropriate height of insole may change the plantar pressure distribution during squat exercise in subjects with calf muscle shortness.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the actual conditions of clothing of disabled adult men using wheelchair, to understand dissatisfactions and problems in wearing garment, and to construct basic data to development of the formal wear for wheelchair user. This study conducted survey of 162 men using wheelchair who regularly enjoy the sports for disabled people or who work in society. The results of this study are follows. The majority of wheelchair user tend to wear garment lying or seating. Therefore, they prefer garments that can be easily put on and off. They were dissatisfied mostly with the size of ready-made garment. More than 75% of the subjects tend to repair the purchased formal wear. Shoulder width and bust circumference are too small, jacket length, sleeve length, and slacks length are too big for disabled men using wheelchair. More than 93% subjects tend to prefer T-shirts, because of comfort and easiness to move. The men using wheelchair consider the function and the hygiene of fabric material for T-shirts as the important end.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate onset timing of vastus medialis oblique(VMO) relative to vastus lateralis(VL) the VMO/VL electromyographic(EMG) ratio according to heel height Methods: A repeated measures design was used. Fifteen healthy female college students with no known knee musculoskeletal dysfunction were recruited this study. They carried out a standardised stair acent activity under 4 conditions; barefoot, and with heel height of 1, 3, 7 cm. Muscle activity was measured by surface EMG (Myosystem 1400A, Noraxon Inc., U.S.A). Data were analysed using $1{\times}4$ repeated measures ANOVA. Results: Onset timing differed with heel height(p<.05). However, the VMO/VL EMG ratio was not significantly difference between conditions. Conclusion: We found that 7 cm heel height delayed in VMO onset compared with 3 cm heel height during stair ascent, but no change in the relative EMG intensity of VMO and VL as measured by th VMO/VL ratio. The findings indicate that high-heeled shoes may have disadvantages in knee stability because of delayed onset of VMO. Due to a lack of knee joint stability, wearing of high heeled shoes should be avoided.

  • Background and Objectives: This study aimed to compare functional hearing with the use of a personal sound amplification product (PSAP) or a basic hearing aid (HA) among sensorineural hearing impaired listeners. Subjects and Methods: Nineteen participants with mild-to-moderate sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) (26-55 dB HL; pure-tone average, 0.5-4 kHz) were prospectively included. No participants had prior experience with HAs or PSAPs. Audiograms, speech intelligibility in both quiet and noisy environments, speech quality, and preference were assessed in three different listening conditions: unaided, with the HA, and with the PSAP. Results: The use of PSAP was associated with significant improvement in pure-tone thresholds at 1, 2, and 4 kHz compared to the unaided condition (all p<0.01). In the quiet environment, speech intelligibility was significantly improved after wearing a PSAP compared to the unaided condition (p<0.001), and this improvement was better than the result obtained with the HA. The PSAP also demonstrated similar improvement in the most comfortable levels compared to those obtained with the HA (p<0.05). However, there was no significant improvement of speech intelligibility in a noisy environment when wearing the PSAP (p=0.160). There was no significant difference in the reported speech quality produced by either device or in participant preference for the PSAP or HA. Conclusions: The current result suggests that PSAPs provide considerable benefits to speech intelligibility in a quiet environment and can be a good alternative to compensate for mild-to-moderate SNHL.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the weights of clothing that middle school girl students are wearing and ghow athe students evaluate their comfort sensations for the state-of-clothing and classroom conditions. The results obtained were as follows. 1. Average total weights of clothing of each month were 795.5g/m2 for May(23.4$^{\circ}C$), 539-590.6g/m2(26.0-31.2$^{\circ}C$) from June to August, 723.6g/m2 for September(25.6$^{\circ}C$) and 980.2g/m2 for October(24.$0^{\circ}C$). 2. Total weight was changed markedly from May to June and from september to October. The change was mainly by tops. Not much change was observed for the bottoms due to the fact that students were blue jeans irrespect of the environmental conditions. 3. Not significant relationship was observed between clothing weights adn comfort sensations. When the classroom temperature was 23.4$^{\circ}C$, more than 50% of the students answered comfortable. 4. Negative correlation was observed between amount of bottoms weight and Rohrer Index; in other words, fat students were less bottoms such as pants of skirts. 5. Negative correlation was observed between physical finess and amount of under shirts at the month of May, June and October; students with igher physical fitness scores wear less under wear when the environmental temperature changes.
