A discrete element approach is used to investigate the effects of confining stress on the shear behaviour of joint's bridge area. A punch-through shear test is used to model the concrete cracks under different shear and confining stresses. Assuming a plane strain condition, special rectangular models are prepared with dimension of $75mm{\times}100mm$. Within the specimen model and near its four corners, four equally spaced vertical notches of the same depths are provided so that the central portion of the model remains intact. The lengths of notches are 35 mm. and these models are sequentially subjected to different confining pressures ranging from 2.5 to 15 MPa. The axial load is applied to the punch through the central portion of the model. This testing and models show that the failure process is mostly governed by the confining pressure. The shear strengths of the specimens are related to the fracture pattern and failure mechanism of the discontinuities. The shear behaviour of discontinuities is related to the number of induced shear bands which are increased by increasing the confining pressure while the cracks propagation lengths are decreased. The failure stress and the crack initiation stress both are increased due to confining pressure increase. As a whole, the mechanisms of brittle shear failure changes to that of the progressive failure by increasing the confining pressure.
The crack under the influence of the higher intensities of the stresses grows and the structure gets collapsed with the time when the crack length reaches to critical value. Therefore, the fracture behavior of a structure in terms of stress intensity factors (SIF) becomes important to determine the remaining fracture strength and capacity of material and structure for avoiding catastrophic failure, increasing safety and further improvement in the design. The robustness of the method has been demonstrated by comparing the numerical results with analytical and experimental results of some problems. XFEM is used to model cracks and holes in structures and predict their strength and reliability under service conditions. Further, XFEM is extended with a stochastic method for predicting the sensitivity in terms of output COVs and fracture strength in terms of mean values of stress intensity factors (SIFs) of a structure with discontinuities (cracks and holes) under tensile loading condition with input individual and combined randomness in different system parameters. In stochastic technique, the second order perturbation technique (SOPT) has been used for the predicting the fracture behavior of the structures. The stochastic/perturbation technique is also known as Taylor series expansion method and it provides the reliable results if the input randomness is less than twenty percentage. From the present numerical analysis it is observed that, the crack tip near to the hole is under the influence of the stress concentration and the variational effect of the input random parameters on the crack tip in terms of the SIFs are lesser so the COVs are the less sensitive. The COVs of mixed mode SIFs are the most sensitive for the crack angles (α=45° to 90°) for all the values of c1 and d1. The plate with the shorter distance between hole and crack is the most sensitive with all the crack angles but the crack tip which is much nearer to the hole has the highest sensitivity.
This study was conducted to suggest a method to determine weighting values of each parameter of the RMR system considered with geologic characteristics of a study area. This study reviewed the weighting values of the RMR system for the Cretaceous sedimentary rocks distributed in Ulsan area. Based on the data of field survey at the study area, a multiple regression analysis was used to set up an optimal weighting values of the RMR parameters. For the multiple regression analysis, each parameter of the RMR and the slope gradient were regarded as the independent variable and the dependent variable, respectively. The analysis result suggested a modified weighting values of the RMR parameters as follows; 30 for the intact strength of rock; 18 for RQD; 8 for spacing of discontinuities; 32 for the condition of discontinuities; and 12 for ground water.
Multiple well log analysis technique consisting of geophysical well log and geological core log has been made to analysis the discontinuities of a test borehole-PABH1 located in Pungam sedimentary basin, Sosok, Hongchon-gun, Kangwon Province. Well log methods consist of normal resistivity log, focussed log, single point resistance log, SP log, gamma log, natural gamma log as well as acoustic televiewer log and borehole television log. Core scanning technique was used as an aid for geological core log. The analysis was made by comparing firstly the televiewer and core discontinuities, and then the results from conventional geophysical log analysis were compared to those from core log and acoustic televiewer log. Fractures deduced from the acoustic televiewer log coincide well with discontinuities shown on the core and conventional geophysical logs. Particularly close coincidence could be observed between fractures derived from acoustic televiewer and conventional geophysical log analysis. It has been noted that the geophysical logs such as, caliper, resistivity, density and high resolution gamma gamma curves are effective in delineating the fractures. For example the ratio between density and resistivity (BRD/SHN) provides also an alternative indicator for discerning the fracture condition in the study area.

Despite of the increasing number of the application of the drilled shaft pile in construction site, most of the study of pile capacity has been centered side shear resistance. But it is common that the drilled shaft is socketed on the rock so as to use the bearing resistance, so prediction of the toe's movement and characteristic of the bearing capacity is important as the side shear resistance. Therefore the model tests were performed in order to study the characteristic of bearing capacity on rock mass. The material of the test blocks were the mortar which was mixed with sand, cement and water, and test block size was $240{\times}240{\times}240mm$. Load was pressed by the 45mm of diameter of miniaturized pile and plate jack and steal plate were used to the confined stress for representing the underground condition. The relation of load-displacement was measured in many different conditions of rock mass such as direction of discontinuities, spacing and strength, and q-w curves of the toe of the pile were verified in each condition.

The large planar failure has occurred in a rock cut slope of highway construction site in Boeun. This area is considered as unstable since the discontinuities whose orientations are similar to the orientation of the failure plane, are observed in many areas. Therefore, several analysis techniques such as SMR, stereographic analysis, limit equilibrium, numerical analysis, which are commonly used in rock slope stability analysis, are adopted in this area. In order to analyze the stress redistribution and nonlinear displacement caused by cut, which are not obtained in limit equilibrium method, the UDEC and shear strength reduction technique were used in this study Then the factors of safety evaluated by shear strength reduction technique and limit equilibrium were compared. In addition, the factor of safety under fully saturated slope condition was calculated and subsequently, the effect of the reinforcement was evaluated.
The study tasked by Ryan Lode Mines, Inc. involved analysis of pit slope stability for two future pits, Ryan and Curlew. A geological discontinuity survey and groundwater information were obtained through a field program. Twenty core logs containing geotechnical information were used for rock mass classification. The kinematic analysis was performed based on a friction angle (${\Phi}=35^{\circ}$), the distribution of geological structures, and a dry slope condition. Factors of safety of pit slopes in two future mines were determined using the limit equilibrium method. The mine slopes and benches designed by Mine Development Associates (MDA) were analyzed. The analysis indicated that both pits should have an overall safety factor above 1.0, provided the slopes are kept dry. However, slopes in both pits exceeding 91.4 m (300 ft) high will become critical, when water fills the cracks and discontinuities.
The microstructures of the HAZ (Heat Affected Zone) are generally different from the base metal due to rapid thermal cycle during welding process. Particuraly, CGHAZ (Coarsened Grain Heat Affected Zone) near the fusion line is the most concerned region in which many metallurgical and mechanical discontinuities have been normally generated. A computer program by the numerical formularization of phase transformation during cooling with different rates was developed to generate the CCT diagram, and to predict microstructural (phase) changes in the CGHAZ. In order to verify simulated results, isothermal and continuous cooling transformation experiments were conducted. The simulated and experimental results showed that the developed computer model could successfully predict the room temperature microstructural changes (changes in volume fraction of phases) under various welding conditions (heat input & cooling rate $(Δt_{8/5})$).

A majority of piping vibration problems are induced by internal fluid pulsation; turbulent flow, vortex shedding at internal discontinuities, and pressure pulsation at equipment nozzles. The pulsation at the pressure sources resonates acoustically with the piping and the amplified pressure pulsation can generate shell mode vibration in the piping. Reheater attemperator piping supplies water from feedwater pump to reheater attemperator to control the boiler temperature. In normal operating condition, the high frequency shell mode vibration occurred in the piping with the high level of sound(105 ${\sim}$ 117 dB). The vibration sources are pressure pulsation in the pump nozzle and the frequencies are related to the blade passing frequencies. The objects of this paper are to analyze the cause of the high frequency vibration and to establish corrective actions.
Reference/modulating waveform continuity is not a necessary condition for the implementation of switching patterns for three-phase pulse-width modulated(PWM) converters. This is based on the fact that the converter phase-voltages do not need to be sinusoidal and switching pattern discontinuities do not degrade the quality of output/input voltage/current waveforms by introducing low-order harmonics if certain parameters are optimized. This paper introduces the selected harmonic elimination to reduce the switching frequency and low-order harmonics compared with continuous PWM techniques and some discontinues switching patterns for PWM converter.
