  • Concrete is known as a heterogeneous product which is composed of complex chemical composition and reaction. The development of concrete thermal effect during early age is critical on its future structural health and long term durability. When cement is mixed with water, the exothermic chemical reaction generates hydration heat, which raises the temperature within the concrete. Consequently, cracking may occur if the concrete temperature rises too high or if there is a large temperature difference between the interior and the exterior of concrete structures during early age hydration. This paper describes the contribution of novel Fabry-Perot (FP) fiber optic temperature sensors to investigate the thermal effects of concrete hydration process. Concrete specimens were manufactured under various water-to-cement (w/c) ratios from 0.40 to 0.60. During the first 24 hours of concreting, two FP fiber optic temperature sensors were inserted into concrete specimens with the protection of copper tubing to monitor the surface and core temperature change. The experimental results revealed effects of w/c ratios on surface and core temperature developments during early age hydration, as well as demonstrating that FP fiber optic sensors are capable of capturing temperature variation in the concrete with reliable performance. Temperature profiles are used for calculating the apparent activation energy ($E_a$) and the heat of hydration (H(t)) of concrete, which can help us to better understand cement hydration.

  • In marine and coastal environments, penetration of chloride ions is one of the main mechanisms causing concrete reinforcement corrosion. Currently, most of experimental investigations about submerged penetration of chloride ions are started after the four weeks standard curing of concrete. The further hydration of cement and reduction of chloride diffusivity during submerged penetration period are ignored. To overcome this weak point, this paper presents a numerical procedure to analyze simultaneously cement hydration reaction and chloride ion penetration process. First, using a cement hydration model, degree of hydration and phase volume fractions of hardening concrete are determined. Second, the dependences of chloride diffusivity and chloride binding capacity on age of concrete are clarified. Third, chloride profiles in hardening concrete are calculated. The proposed numerical procedure is verified by using chloride penetration test results of concrete with different mixing proportions.

  • Granulated slag from metal industries and fly ash from the combustion of coal are industrial by-products that have been widely used as mineral admixtures in normal and high strength concrete. Due to the reaction between calcium hydroxide and fly ash or slag, the hydration of concrete containing fly ash or slag is much more complex compared with that of Portland cement. In this paper, the production of calcium hydroxide in cement hydration and its consumption in the reaction of mineral admixtures is considered in order to develop a numerical model that simulates the hydration of concrete containing fly ash or slag. The heat evolution rates of fly ash- or slag-blended concrete is determined by the contribution of both cement hydration and the reaction of the mineral admixtures. Furthermore, the temperature distribution and temperature history in hardening blended concrete are evaluated based on the degree of hydration of the cement and the mineral admixtures. The proposed model is verified through experimental data on concrete with different water-to-cement ratios and mineral admixture substitution ratios.

  • Recently, the properties of early-age concrete are increasingly important because these properties directly influence the behavior of early-age concrete structures including stress and cracking behavior. Nevertheless, the studies on early-age concrete are limited to strength and temperature development. The purpose of present study is to propose a simple and rational method which can predict the stress and strain behavior of young age concrete. A series of test have been done to measure the temperature development, strains and stresses in concrete members. The concept of equivalent age was used to define the degree of hydration and this degree of hydration was used to calculate the strength and elastic modulus. The critical degree of hydration and thermal expansion coefficient were calculated using experimental data. It is seen that the critical degree of hydration range from 0.05 to 0.11 based on the measuring method. The thermal expansion coefficient was calculated based on the measured non-mechanical strain and it is found that the coefficient decreases slightly with the increase of age. The consideration of critical degree of hydration in calculating stresses gives more accurate results. The present study provides useful method and data in evaluating early-age behavior of concrete structure.

  • Recently, as a performance based design concept is introduced, assurance of expected performances on serviceability and safety in the whole span of life is exactly requested. So, quantitative assessments about durability related properties of concrete in early-age long term are come to necessary, Especially in early age, deterioration which affects long-term durability performance can be occurred by hydration heat and shrinkage, so development of reasonable hydration heat model which can simulate early age behavior is necessary. The micor-pore structure formation property also affects shrinkage behavior in early age and carbonations and chloride ion penetration characteristic in long term, So, for the quantitative assessment on durability performance of concrete, modelings of early age concrete based on hydration process and micor-pore structure formation characteristics are important. In this paper, a micromechanics based hydration heat evolution model is adopted and a quantitative model which can simulate micro-pore structure development is also verified with experimental results. The models can be used effectively to simulate the early-age behavior of concrete composed of different mix proportions.

  • The strength development of concrete is influenced by temperature and cement type which greatly affect hydration degree of cement. There is not pertinent concrete strength management method in korea. There are several methods for estimating the in-place strength of concrete. One such method is the maturity concept. The maturity concept is based on the fact that concrete gains strength gradually as a result of chemical reactions between cement and water; and for a specific concrete mixture, strength at any age and at normal conditions is related to the degree of hydration. The rate of hydration and, therefore, strength development of a given concrete will be a function of its temperature. Thus, strength of concrete depends on its time-temperature history. The goals of the present study are to investigate a relationship between strength of high-strength concrete and maturity that is expressed as a function of an integral of the curing period and temperature and predict strength of concrete.

  • Ultrasonic waves provide a non-destructive and sensitive way to monitor the concrete hydration. However, limited works are reported to monitor the evolution of the mechanical parameter at early ages. In this study, modified piezoelectric aggregates are embedded inside a concrete beam to excite and receive primary waves. A hydration index, namely, the variation of ultrasonic waveform (VUW) is developed to characterize the variation of the transmitted waves during the hydration process. The recorded hydration indices are compared with the compressive strength measured by destructive test at different ages. The results show that the VUW is closer to the compressive strength than the other two traditional hydration indices, ultrasonic velocity and wave packet energy. The proposed VUW provides a simple and accurate way to monitor the concrete hydration at early ages.

  • In process of reinforced concrete (RC) box structure. the heat of hydration may cause serious thermal cracking. In order to eliminate hydration heat of mass concrete. this paper reports results of hydration heat control in mass concrete structure using the pulsating heat pipe. There were three RC box molds($1.2{\times}l.8{\times}2.4m^3$) which shows a difference as compared with each other. One was not equipped with pulsating heat pipe. The others were equipped with pulsating heat pipe. All of them were cooled with natural air convection. The pulsating heat pipe was composed of serpentine type copper pipe with 10 turns (outer diameter: 4mm. inner diameter: 2.8mm). The working fluid was R-22 and its charging ratio was 40% by volume. The conditions such as the number of turns. the length and the pitch of the pulsating heat pipe and the size of concrete structure were changed. Based on these experiments, it was confirmed that this construction method using pulsating heat pipe was effective to remove hydration heat of mass concrete structure and thus it was possible to prevent harmful thermal crack and construction Period and costs of concrete structure would be cut down.
