  • The TR-CFT(Transversely Reinforced Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column is proposed to control or at least delay the state of local buckling at the critical section by wrapping the CFT columns with a carbon fiber sheet. In this study, an equation to determine the flexural strength of TR-CFT is proposed. The ACI-318 code, in which the contribution of the confining effect in the concrete filled steel tube is not appropriately accounted for, may be conservative. Therefore, flexural strength design equations for CFT columns and TR-CFT columns are proposed based on the concrete strain-stress curve, which contributes to the confining effect. Finally, the predicted results for the CFT and TR-CFT columns are shown to be in good agreement with actual test results.

  • The CFT (Concrete Filled Steel Tube) columns became popular in high rise building construction due to not only its composite effect but also economic advantage. However, it has been pointed out in various previous researches that the current practice in CFT columns may lead the steel tube to probable local buckling at critical sections of the columns right after yielding. To resolve such a problem, the TR-CFT (Transversely Reinforced Concrete Filled Steel Tube) column is proposed to control or at least delay the local buckling state at the critical section by wrapping the CFT columns with carbon fiber sheet. The validity of the proposed column system is validated through the present paper by observing the experimental performance and comparing it with the analytical prediction of the TR-CFT columns with hish strength concrete. It is also shown that the current design code provisions such as ACI-318, in which the contribution of concrete confining effect filled in steel tube is not appropriately accounted for, may contain too much conservatism.

  • The concrete-filled steel tube (CFT) columns have several benefits of high load-bearing capacity, inherent ductility and toughness because of the confinement effect of the steel tube on concrete and the restraining effect of the concrete on local buckling of steel tube. However, the experimental research into the behavior of square CFT columns consisting of high-strength steel and high-strength concrete is limited. Six full scale CFT specimens were tested under flexural moment. The CFT columns consisted of high-strength steel tubes ($f_y$ = 325 MPa, 555 MPa, 900 MPa) and high-strength concrete ($f_{ck}$ = 80 MPa and 120 MPa). The ultimate capacity of high strength square CFT columns was compared with AISC-LRFD design code. Also, this study was focused on investigating the effect of high-strength materials on the structural behavior and the mathematical models of the steel tube and concrete. Nonlinear fiber element analyses were conducted based on the material model considering the cyclic bending behavior of high-strength CFT members. The results obtained from the numerical analyses were compared with the experimental results. It was found that the numerical analysis results agree well with the experimental results.

  • Concrete-filled steel tubular (CFT) columns are commonly used in engineering structures and always subjected to torsion in practice. This paper is thus devoted to investigate the mechanical behavior of circular CFT columns under pure torsion.3D finite element models based on reasonable material constitutive relation were established for analyzing the load-strain ($T-{\gamma}$) curves of circular CFT columns under pure torsion. The numerical simulation indicated that local bulking of the steel tube in CFT columns was prevented and the shear strength and ductility of the core concrete were significantly improved due to the confinement effect between the steel tube and the core concrete. Based on the results, formulas to predict the torsional ultimate bearing capacity of circular CFT columns were proposed with satisfactory correspondence with experimental results. Besides, formulas of composite shear stiffness and the overall process of the $T-{\gamma}$ relation of circular CFT columns under pure torsion were proposed.

  • Recently, to improve performance and strength of circular steel columns, application of concrete-filled steel tube(CFT) type are gradually increased. To accurately predict the plastic design of concrete-filled steel tube columns, a plasticity model is required which can be describe large deformation behavior of concretes and steels. In this study, elastic-plastic large deformation analysis is developed by using the plasticity model of structural steels, and accurate and validity of the developed program is verified by comparing between the experiment and the analysis for concrete-filled steel tube column. In concrete-filled steel tube columns, influence of initial deflection on ultimate strength behavior is investigated by using developed program.

  • Concrete-filled double skin steel tube (CFDST) beam-columns are widely used in industrial plants, subways, high-rise buildings and arch bridges. The CFDST columns have the same advantages as traditional CFT members. Moreover, they have lighter weight, higher bending stiffness, better cyclic performance, and have higher fire resistance capacities than their CFT counterparts. The scope of this study is to develop finite element models that can predict accepted capacities of double skin concrete-filled tube columns under the combined effect of axial and bending actions. The analysis results were studied to determine the distribution of stresses among the different components and the effect of the concrete core on the outer and inner steel tube. The developed models are first verified against the available experimental data. Accordingly, an extensive parametric study was performed considering different key factors including load eccentricity, slenderness ratio, concrete compressive strength, and steel tube yield strength. The results of the performed parametric study are intended to supplement the experimental research and examine the accuracy of the available design formulas.

  • The aim of this research is to evaluate the fire resistance of concrete-filled steel square tube columns (square CFT columns) under constant axial loads by numerical analysis. The authors examined the experimental results on the fire resistance of concrete-filled steel square tube columns without fire protection. As the materials of CFT columns, steel of SPSR 400 grade and concrete of 27.5MPa and 37.8MPa strengths were used. The significant parameters were determined, such as load ratio, cross-sectional dimensions, and concrete strength. Detailed analytical simulations of fire resistance and axial deformation showed good agreement with the experimental observations. Therefore, this numerical analysis exhibited a reasonable estimation of fire resistance of the square CFT column. Results of the numerical parametric studies showed that the fire resistance of the CFT columns increased with the decrease of the concrete strength and the increase of the cross-sectional dimensions about the constant axial load ratio ($N/N_c$).

  • A concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column with stiffeners has preferable behavior subjected to axial loading condition due to delay local buckling of the steel wall than traditional CFT columns without stiffeners. Welding lines in welded built-up steel box columns is expected to behave as longitudinal stiffeners. This study has presented a numerical investigation into the behavior of built-up concrete filled steel tube columns under axial pressure. At first stage, a finite element model (FE) has been built to simulate the behavior of built-up CFT columns. Comparing the results of FE and test has shown that numerical model passes the desired conditions and could accurately predict the axial performance of CFT column. Also, by the raise of steel tube thickness, the load bearing capacity of columns has been increased due to higher confinement effect. Also, the raise of concrete strength with greater cross section is led to a higher load bearing capacity compared to the steel tube thickness increment. In CFT columns with greater cross section, concrete strength has a higher influence on load bearing capacity which is noticeable in columns with more welding lines.

  • Proper material constitutive models for concrete-filled tube (CFT) columns of circular cross section and subjected to pure bending moment are proposed. These material models are implemented into the Abaqus finite element program and verified against experimental data. It has been shown that the steel tube does not provide good confining effect to the concrete core when the CFT columns is subjected to pure bending moment. When the diameter-to-thickness ratio of the CFT columns is small, the behavior of the CFT column is the same as the steel tube without a concrete core.

  • AISC-LRFD, ACI 318 and Korean design specifications for concrete filled circular steel tube columns do not consider the increasing of axial stiffness such as the elastic modulus and the yield strength due to the confinement effect. AISC-LRFD and ACI 318, however, shows different basic philosophy and equations for computing the elastic modulus and the strength of CFT columns. Through this experimental study, 9 circular CFT column specimens were made by varying thickness steel tube and concrete strength, the axial stiffness were compared. The comparison between the design specifications and the test results shows different values on the elastic modulus and yield strength of the CFT columns. Even though, yield strength of the CFT columns are very similar between AISC-LRFD and Korean design specifications.
