We present a quadrilateral finite element with an embedded crack that can be used to model tensile fracture in two-dimensional concrete solids and the crack growth. The element has kinematics that can represent linear jumps in both normal and tangential displacements along the crack line. The cohesive law in the crack is based on rigid-plasticity with softening. The required material data for the concrete failure analysis are the constants of isotropic elasticity and the mode I softening curve. The results of two well known tests are presented in order to illustrate very satisfying performance of the presented approach to simulate failure of concrete solids.

This paper is mai y focused to develop new concrete material model such as ultimate failure surface in compression-compression region, hardening rule and cracking criteria which are basically used in the nonlinear finite element analysis of nuclear prestressed concrete containment building. From the Kepri's experimental results, failure surface of the concrete based on the elasto-plastic material model is modified and new cracking criteria is proposed. Nonlinear FE analysis program using a new material model is implemented to analysis plane concrete. Finally, numerical simulation to compare the performance of the new material model with experimental results is employed. The numerical results by the proposed model in this study agree very well with the experimental data.

Concrete structures such as bridge, pavement, airfield, and offshore structure are normally subjected to repeated load. This paper proposes a failure probability models of concrete subjected to split tension repeated-loads, based on experimental results. The fatigue tests were performed at the stress ratio of 0.1, the loading shape of sine, the frequency of 20Hz, and the stress levels of 90, 80 and 70%. The fatigue test specimen was 150mm in diameter and 75mm in thickness. The fatigue analysis did not include which exceeded 0.9 of statistical coefficient of determination values or did not failure at 2$\times$$10^6$ cycles. The graphical method, the moment method, and maximum likelihood estimation method were used to obtain Weibull distribution parameters. The goodness-of-fit test by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test was acceptable 5% level of significance. As a result, the proposed failure probability model based on the two-parameter($\alpha and \mu$) Weibull distribution was good enough to estimate accurately the fatigue life subjected to tension mode.

This paper is to explain reasonable shear behavior that can apply usually to reinforced concrete beams on the basic concepts of existent analysis and experimental research information. This study is succession $paper^{2) 3) 4) 5)}$ of treatise announced in existing and main control variable of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups used internal force state factor($\alpha$). Shear failure of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups is Influenced greatly because of the actual geometrical shape(a/d) of the concrete and flexural reinforcement steel ratio, stirrup reinforcement ratio and concrete compression strength, size effect etc. Therefore, shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams with stirrups that flexural crack is happened can be explained easily through proper extent proposal of internal force state factor($\alpha$) that express internal force state flowing. Use existent variable truss model by analysis model to explain arch action. Also, wish to compose each failure factors and correlation with internal force state factor by function, and when diagonal cracks happens, internal force state factor($\alpha$) study whether shear stress and some effect are.

The designer has difficulty due to inadequacy of provisions in the domestic design code and lack of understanding for behavior of D-region. The reinforced concrete pi(${\pi}$)-shaped RC rahmen bridge consists of various failure mechanisms as the crushing or splitting from compression concrete, and shearing failure under the loading plate. However, predicting those failure mechanisms is very difficult. In this study, the pi(${\pi}$)-shaped RC rahmen bridge is analyzed and designed by using strut-tie model. Adequacy for the application of strut-tie model is verified by comparison with the way used in current design practice. As a result that designing the structures should be maked a comparison between strut-tie model and current conventional design method.
In this paper we back-analyze a failure event of a 9 m high concrete cantilever wall subjected to earth loading. Granular soil was deposited into the space between the wall and a nearby rock slope. The wall segments were not designed to carry lateral earth loading and collapsed due to excessive bending. As many geotechnical programs rely on the Mohr-Coulomb (MC) criterion for elastoplastic analysis, it is useful to apply this failure criterion to the concrete material. Accordingly, the back-analysis is aimed to search for the suitable MC parameters of the concrete. For this study, we propose a methodology for accelerating the back-analysis task by automating the numerical modeling procedure and applying a machine-learning (ML) analysis on FE model results. Through this analysis it is found that the residual cohesion and friction angle have a highly significant impact on model results. Compared to traditional back-analysis studies where good agreement between model and reality are deemed successful based on a limited number of models, the current ML analysis demonstrate that a range of possible combinations of parameters can yield similar results. The proposed methodology can be modified for similar calibration and back-analysis tasks.
The capability of a multi-directional fixed smeared crack constitutive model to simulate the flexural/punching failure modes of fiber reinforced concrete (FRC) laminar structures is discussed. The constitutive model is implemented in a computer program based on the finite element method, where the FRC laminar structures were simulated according to the Reissner-Mindlin shell theory. The shell is discretized into layers for the simulation of the membrane, bending and out-of-plane shear nonlinear behavior. A stress-strain softening diagram is proposed to reproduce, after crack initiation, the evolution of the normal crack component. The in-plane shear crack component is obtained using the concept of shear retention factor, defined by a crack-strain dependent law. To capture the punching failure mode, a softening diagram is proposed to simulate the decrease of the out-of-plane shear stress components with the increase of the corresponding shear strain components, after crack initiation. With this relatively simple approach, accurate predictions of the behavior of FRC structures failing in bending and in shear can be obtained. To assess the predictive performance of the model, a punching experimental test of a module of a façade panel fabricated with steel fiber reinforced self-compacting concrete is numerically simulated. The influence of some parameters defining the softening diagrams is discussed.

For implementation of the strut-tie model approach to the practical analysis and design of structural concrete, the effective strengths of concrete struts in a strut-tie model, which have a crucial effect on the determination of strut and tie forces and the validity verification of strut-tie model's geometric compatibility condition, have to be determined accurately. In this study, the validity of the methods for determining the effective strengths of concrete struts was evaluated by conducting the strut-tie model analyses of the three reinforced concrete deep beams tested to failure with the effective strengths of concrete struts obtained from the suggested determination methods.
Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bars have been widely used as reinforcement for concrete structures. However, under elevated temperatures, the difference between the transverse coefficients of thermal expansion of FRP rebars and concrete may cause the splitting cracks of the concrete cover. As a result, the bonding of FRP-reinforced concrete may not sustain its function to transfer load between the FRP rebar and the surrounding concrete. The current study investigates the cracking resistance of FRP reinforced concrete against the thermal expansion based on a mechanical model that accounts for the tensile softening behavior of concrete. To evaluate the efficacy of the proposed model, the critical temperature increments at which the splitting failure of the concrete cover occurs and the internal crack radii estimated are compared with the results obtained from the previous studies. Simplified equations for estimating the critical temperature increments and the minimum concrete cover required to prevent concrete splitting failure for a designated temperature increment are also derived for design purpose.
The size effect on axial compressive strength in notched concrete specimens was experimentally investigated. Based on the concept of the fracture mechanics and size effect law, theoretical studies for axial compressive failure of concrete were reviewed, and two failure modes of concrete specimens under compression were discussed. In this study, experiments of axial compressive failure, which is one of the two failure modes, was carried out by using cylindrical specimens. Adequate notch length was taken from the experimental result of strength variation based on the notch length. And, by taking various sizes of specimens the size effect on axial compressive strength of concrete was investigated. Also, model equations were suggested by modified size effect law (MSEL). The test results show that size effect appears conspicuously for all series of specimens. Additionally, the effect of initial notch length on axial compressive strength was also apparent.
