  • Recently, the underground reinforced concrete(RC) box structures have been increasingly built in Korea. In such structures, the heat of hydration may cause serious cracking problems. The RC box structures are classified in this category that needs much attention to control the hydration heat during construction. The purpose of the present study is to analyse the parameters which are related to the thermal crackings of the box structures. In this study, the quantitative studies of thermal stresses according to construction conditions in the RC box structures are thoroughly analysed. Major influencing variables are studied through the finite element analysis which affect the thermal cracking of RC box structures.

  • The bigger of concrete structures by a construct technique improvement, and the increase of the cement quantity which is caused by with use of the high-strength concrete for the load-carrying-capacity and a durability cause temperature cracks by a heat of hydration. The temperature crack due to the heat of hydration classified a nonstructural crack. but it has a bad effect on durability of concrete structures. especially, in case of a subway concrete box structure, when a water-proof facilities is beaked on an outer-wall, the water leakage occurs through a penetration crack generated from a wall of the concrete structure too. This paper, for the subway concrete box structure, which is located in chloride attack region, the use of blended cement, the temperature of air and concrete, was considered and analysed by a three dimensional finite element method.

  • A basic assumption in the current design and analysis of reinforced concrete(RC) box structures, which are constructed by the open cut and fill method, is that the displacements and forces are uniform in the longitudinal direction of the structure. The solution may be therefore obtatined from the analysis of a unit wide strip along longitudinal axis. This strip is said to be in a plane strain condition, meaning that the out of plane deformations are vanished. The current design of box structure is carried out by the result of planar frame model for the sake of simplicity. The purpose of this study is to show more rational design method of box culverts considering a rigid zone of corner joints. The current analysis of box structures will be compared with the plane strain analysis as well as 3-d shell model. Reinforcement quantity is also determined to resist the tensile force in corner joints of box structures using strut-tie model which has been developed through the elastic analysis.

  • More underground structures are increasingly being constructed such as box culverts for electric power transmission, and the life extension of these structures is very important. It is well known that the steel embedded in concrete is usually invulnerable to corrosion because the high alkalinity of the pore solution in concrete generates a thin protective oxide layer on the surface of the steel. Recent observations in the field and experimental evidence have shown that even steel in concrete can be corroded through the carbonation reaction of cover concrete. Carbonation-induced corrosion in concrete may often occur in a high carbon dioxide environment. In this study, the risk of carbonation of underground box culverts in Korea was evaluated by measuring the car¬bonation rate and concrete cover depth in the field. Then, the carbonation-free service life for the cover depth of the steel was calcu¬lated with in situ information and Monte Carlo simulation. Additionally, an accelerated carbonation test for a cracked beam specimen was performed, and the effect of a crack on the service life of a box culvert was numerically investigated with Monte Carlo simulation based on experimental results.

  • In order to use a recycled aggregate concrete for precast concrete box structures, the structural behaviors should be analytically and experimentally evaluated. In this study, full-scale precast concrete box structures are manufactured using the recycled aggregate (30% replacement) and natural aggregate. Then, the flexural failure test and shear failure test as well as water leakage lest for the structures arc carried out. First of all, test results of compressive strength show that recycled aggregate concrete is only 4% lower than normal concrete. In the flexural and shear failure test, the structural performances of precast box using the recycled aggregate concrete are 95% of the capacities of normal precast concrete box or more. Especially, the water leakage test shows that leakage pressure of recycled concrete box is more than the critical value, 60kPa, as well as 9% higher than normal precast concrete box. These test results are analyzed and compared with results of finite clement analysis. The comparison shows that test results are more excellent than analytical results. Also, the comparison confirms the applicability of recycled aggregate concrete for the use as practical precast concrete box structure.

The major influencing variables are studied through the finite element analysis which affect the thermal cracking of RC box structures. The research results of the present study can be efficiently used for the control of cracking of box structures during construction stages.

  • The objective of the study is to predict the moment anchorage capacity of the concrete filled steel box (CFSB) as footing by using the 3D finite element program CAMUI developed by authors' laboratory. The steel box is filled with concrete and concrete filled steel tube (CFT) column is inserted in the box. Numerical simulation of the experimental specimens was carried out after introducing the new constitutive model for post peak behavior of concrete in compression under confinement. The experimental program was conducted to verify the reliability of the simulation results by the FE program. The simulated peak loads agree reasonably with the experimental ones and was controlled by concrete crushing near the column. After confirming the reliability of the FEM simulation, effects of different parameters on the moment anchorage capacity of concrete filled steel box footing were clarified by conducting numerically parametric study.

  • This paper presents the design, fabrication and performance of a reinforced concrete beam strengthened by GFRP box plate and its possibility for structural rehabilitations. The load capacity, ductility and failure mode of reinforced concrete structures strengthened by FRP box plate were investigated and compared with traditional FRP plate strengthening method. This is intended to assess the feasibility of using FRP box plate for repair and strengthening of damaged RC beams. A series of four-point bending tests were conducted on RC beams with or without strengthening FRP systems the influence of concrete cover thickness on the performance of overall stiffness of the structure. The parameters obtained by the experimental studies were the stiffness, strength, crack width and pattern, failure mode, respectively. The test yielded complete load-deflection curves from which the increase in load capacity and the failure mode was evaluated.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the fire resistance of high strength fiber reinforced concrete filled box columns (CFBCs) under combined temperature and loading. Two groups of full-size specimens were fabricated. The control group was a steel box filled with high-strength concrete (HSC), while the experimental group consisted of a steel box filled with high strength fiber concrete (HFC) and two steel boxes filled with fiber reinforced concrete. Prior to fire test, a constant compressive load (i.e., load level for fire design) was applied to the column specimens. Thermal load was then applied on the column specimens in form of ISO 834 standard fire curve in a large-scale laboratory furnace until the set experiment termination condition was reached. The test results show that filling fiber concrete can improve the fire resistance of CFBC. Moreover, the configuration of longitudinal reinforcements and transverse stirrups can significantly improve the fire resistance of CFBCs.
