  • The superoxide dismutase (SOD) in Lactococcus lactis was measured quantitatively and qualitatively under various culture conditions. The L. lactis SOD was induced by oxidative stress. As the concentration of paraquat to produce superoxide radicals increased, the growth of L. lactis decreased with concomitant increase of SOD activity. The SOD activity was found to be growth-phase dependent: when aerobically grown cells entered to the stationary phase, the activity increased gradually until the late stationary phase. From inhibition studies, L. lactis SOD was found to be insensitive to KCN and $H_2O_2$ which are known to inhibit Cu/ZnSOD and FeSOD, respectively. Moreover, as the concentration of manganese in the medium increased, the activity of SOD also increased. These data strongly suggested that L. lactis possessed a single manganese-containing SOD (MnSOD). Finally, a putative sod gene fragment of 510 bp was identified in L. lactis using a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with degenerate primers designed from the deduced DNA sequences of known SOD genes.

  • Variations in the course and distribution of common palmar digital nerves and arteries are rare. A classic common palmar digital nerves and arteries are defined as concomitant. During routine dissection classes to undergraduate medical students we observed formation of each common palmar digital nerve divided into 2 or 3 branches and formed a ring enclosing the corresponding common palmar digital artery. Knowledge of the anatomical variations of the common palmar digital nerves and arteries is crucial for safe and successful hand surgery.

  • In 2008, Taiwan adopted a new mixed member system which is significantly different from the long-implemented SNTV-MMD system for the election of legislators. The new system cuts the number of legislative seats from 225 to 113, extends legislators' terms of office from three years to four, and most importantly, adopts a new mixed-member majoritarian (MMM) electoral system to replace the SNTV system for legislative elections. The election of legislators in 2008 was the first time that this new mixed electoral system was implemented in Taiwan. Mainstream literature continues to discuss the electoral impact on political parties and candidates by the new system while citizens' knowledge of the new system and its concomitant effects on citizens' behavior receive less attention. Worse still, almost all of the literature assumes that voters were fully aware of the operation and impact of the new electoral system and cast their ballots wisely. The purpose of this paper is to explore citizen's perceptions, participation and evaluation of this new system.

  • We present a case of chondroblastoma in the thoracic vertebra. A 40-year-old patient with upper back pain and lower extremity weakness was admitted to our clinic. On neurological examination, the patient exhibited lower extremity spastic paraparesis. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a mass infiltrating the 7th thoracic vertebra and its adjacent structures with concomitant compression of the epidural space. After right upper lung tuberculoma was resected through the transthoracic approach, T7 total corpectomy was done with anterior stabilization using a MESH cage and T7 rib bone graft. Two weeks after the first operation, remained part of vertebra was removed and posterior stabilization was performed using a pedicle screw fixation and cross linkage bar with the assistance of the navigation system. The final pathologic diagnosis of the vertebral lesion was benign chondroblastoma.

  • A 64-year-old man with TBI was admitted to our institute. In following days, he showed unusual behavior of agitation, restlessness, emotional instability and inattention. Post-traumatic delirium was tentatively diagnosed, and donepezil was given for his cognitive dysfunction. Although there was partial relief of agitation, he sustained back pain despite medication. Lumbar magnetic resonance image revealed SDH along the whole lumbar spine, and surgical drainage was followed. Postoperatively, his agitation disappeared and further medication was discontinued. We report a unique case of post-traumatic delirium in a patient with concomitant TBI and spinal subdural hemorrhage (SDH) that resolved with operative drainage of spinal hemorrhage.

  • Of the various types of dye that can be used to apply polyamide fibers, acid dyes and pre-metallised acid dyes are great in use so far. However, since these acid dyeings suffer from dye loss during laundering, recourse to an aftertreatment is usually necessary to achieve adequate fastness to washing. In the case of reactive dyes, the characteristically high washfastness of dyeings comes with the concomitant advantages of brightness and low environmental impact. Despite the obvious advantages, the commercialization of reactive dyes for polyamide fibers has not gained widespread success. In this context, the rewards for approach are likely to be considerable. Heterobifunctional reactive dyes were applied to polyamide fibers using various conditions. Optimum conditions and fixation were determined. The forms in which the vinylsulphone and hydrolyzed moieties were examined using HPLC-Mass. In addition, it was found that the extent of the washfastness secured, in terms of both change in color and staining of adjacent multifiber was being acceptable.

  • Traumatic fracture-dislocations of the hip frequently result from high-energy injury, and hip dislocations are commonly associated with severe concomitant injuries. Sciatic nerve injury often accompanies traumatic fracture-dislocation of the hip, but neurologic examination at the time of injury is difficult in severely traumatized patients with decreased consciousness. We present such a case of multiple traumas with traumatic hip dislocation and sciatic nerve injury after reduction, and we found that magnetic resonance image (MRI) played an important role in developing a management plan.

  • Recent years have witnessed speed up of moving vehicles such as high-speed of trains. Increase in speed entails concomitant increase in turbulent air flow which contributes toward aerodynamic noise. The proposed method for aerodynamic noise reduction is based on a biomimetic design of owl feather. The five morphological parameters of the owl feather is extracted from close observation, and simulation cases are constructed by applying design of experiments methodology. Swirling strength for each case is obtained through steady-state CFD analysis, and key morphological parameters that affect the turbulence are identified. Large eddy simulations (LES) are then performed on selected cases to predict the air turbulence. Different cases show varying vorticity distribution levels which is expected to lead to varying aerodynamic noise levels.

  • Sixteen patients with esophageal diverticulum operated on between July 1979 and September 1988 at the Department of Thoracic Surgery of National University Hospital have been studied. There were 2 cases of the pharyngoesophageal diverticula, 12 cases of the midesophageal diverticula, and 2 cases of the epiphrenic diverticula. Twelve cases of midesophageal diverticula consisted of 9 cases of pulsion type and 3 cases of traction type. There were 13 women and three men, whose ages ranged from 25 to 65 years with an average age of 45.5 years. Diverticulectomy alone in three cases, diverticulopexy with myotomy in two cases, and diverticulectomy with myotomy in 11 cases were performed. There were no deaths or morbidity and all patients have achieved marked improvement of their symptoms except four patients who had a concomitant hypopharyngeal carcinoma, had a postoperative recurrence in epiphrenic diverticulum, and had two cases of postoperative transient regurgitation which subsided spontaneously one and one and half year later.
