In this study, the vertical characteristics of wind were analyzed using the horizontal wind, vertical wind, and vertical wind shear, which are generated from a wind profiler during concentrated heavy rain, and the quantitative characteristics of concentrated heavy rain were analyzed using CAPE, SWEAT, and SRH, among the stability indexes. The analysis of the horizontal wind showed that 9 cases out of 10 had a low level jet of 25 kts at altitudes lower than 1.5 km, and that the precipitation varied according to the altitude and distribution of the low-level jet. The analysis of the vertical wind showed that it ascended up to about 3 km before precipitation. The analysis of the vertical wind shear showed that it increased up to a 1 km altitude before precipitation and had a strong value near 3 km during heavy rains. In the stability index analysis, CAPE, which represents thermal buoyancy, and SRH, which represents dynamic vorticity, were used for the interpretation of the period of heavy rain. As SWEAT contains dynamic upper level wind and thermal energy, it had a high correlation coefficient with concentrated-heavy-rain analysis. Through the case studies conducted on August 12-13, 2012, it was confirmed that the interpretation of the prediction of the period of heavy rain was possible when using the intensive observation data from a wind profiler and the stability index.

Natural disasters occurred in Inje and Pyeongchang in 2006 show that unusual changes of weather, which Korean Peninsula has not experienced before, are becoming quite common phenomenon nowadays. In future we have to proceed in the direction of preventing such disasters so as to minimize the damage, by analyzing character and cause of various disasters whenever necessary, performing modeling in simulated real world, and applying the results in disaster prevention policy next year. Applying GIS in this process, the best information for decision-making can be offered. This study has also progressed proceeding from such point of view. The results of this study show that local concentrated heavy rain, caused by the primary topographical factor in the Sulak mountain region, was the main cause of flood disaster occurred in Inje-Gun area in July of 2006. Local concentrated heavy rain is greatly affected by topography. Namely, if there is a mountainous region behind, the area opposite to the direction of rain clouds motion will have high possibility of local concentrated heavy rain.
Heavy rain over the Gangwon region has distinct characteristics in the temporal and spatial distribution of rainfall, most of which are concentrated on a very short period of time and either part of Yeongdong and Yeongseo regions. According to its regional distribution, heavy rain events over the Gangwon region may be classified into Yeongdong and Yeongseo heavy rain in which rainfalls of more than 110 mm $(6 hrs)^{-1}$ (heavy rain warning) have been observed in at least one of the weather stations over only Yeongdong or Yeongseo region, but over the other region the rainfalls are less than 70 mm $(6 hrs)^{-1}$ (heavy rain advisory). To differentiate between Yeongdong and Yeongseo heavy rain, 9 cases for Yeongdong heavy rain and 8 cases for Yeongseo heavy rain are examined on their synoptic and mesoscale environments using some meteorological parameters and ingredients. In addition, 8 cases are examined in which heavy rain warning or advisory are issued in both Yeongdong and Yeongseo regions. The cases for each heavy rain type have shown largely similar features in some meteorological parameters and ingredients. Based on an ingredient analysis, there are three common and basic ingredients for the three heavy rain types: instability, moisture, and lift. However, it is found that the distinct and important process producing strong upward vertical motions may discriminate among three heavy rain types very well. Yeongdong heavy rain is characterized by strong orographic lifting, Yeongseo heavy rain by high instability (high CAPE), and heavy rain over both regions by strong synoptic-scale ascent (strong 850 hPa Q-Vector convergence, diagnostics for ascent). These ingredients and diagnostics for the ingredients can be used to forecasting the potential for regional heavy rain. And also by knowing which of ingredients is important for each heavy rain type, forecasters can concentrate on only a few ingredients from numerous diagnostic and prognostic products for forecasting heavy rain events.

Trace amount of heavy metals in rain waters were determined after preconcentration by coprecipitaion technique. Indium was selected as a coprecipitating reagent and concentrated heavy metals were analyzed by a conventional AA spectrometer. Two areas, Cheng-Won and Tae-Ahn, were selected and comparison. The concentrations of Pb and Cd in Cheong-Won (raural) area were 14.3 .pm. 8.0 ppb and 2.77 .pm. 5.37 ppb, respectively. These values are higher than those of Tae-Ahn, which indicates that even a rural area is polluted by a nearly industrial area (Cheong-Ju). The isotope ratios of lead in rainwaters were very similar to theos of aerosol particles.

A natural disaster occupies a considerable part among various damages, and the damage of human lifes and property by heavy rain extends to hundreds, and billions in every you. In old times, flood was mainly occurred in big river or sudden slope, but these days, the damage of concentrated heavy rain is being extended to a city. Recently, very big floods occurred continuously, so real time submersion expectation system which can expect the inundation boundary according to the scale is needed so as to protect lifes and property. In this study, in and around Jungrang river, where the damage of flood is big, is chosen as a sample, and the submersion of that area is expected by analyzing the flux and overflowing using DEM, and connecting with Web GIS in real time.
Recently, due to global warming, climate change has affected short time concentrated local rain and unexpected heavy rain which is increasingly causing life and property damage. Therefore, this paper studies the characteristic of localized heavy rain and flash flood in Nakdong basin study area by applying Data Mining method to predict flood and constructing water level predicting model. For the verification neural network from Data Mining method and hydraulic flood routing was used for flood from July 1989 to September 1999 in Nakdong point and Iseon point was used to compare flood level change between observed water level and SAM (Slope Area Method). In this research, the study area was divided into three cases in which each point's flood discharge, water level was considered to construct the model for hydraulic flood routing and neural network based on artificial intelligence which can be made from simple input data used for comparison analysis and comparison evaluation according to actual water level and from the model.
Damages caused by torrential rain occur every year in Korea and summer time convection can cause strong thunderstorms to develop which bring dangerous weather such as torrential rain, gusts, and flash flooding. On 6 August 2013 a sudden torrential rain concentrated over the inland of Southern Korean Peninsula occurred. This was an event characterized as a mesoscale multicellular convection. The purpose of this study is to analyze the conditions of the multicellular convection and the synoptic and mesoscale nature of the system development. To this end, dynamical and thermodynamic analyses of surface and upper-level weather charts, satellite images, soundings, reanalysis data and WRF model simulations are performed. At the beginning stage there was a cool, dry air intrusion in the upper-level of the Korean Peninsula, and a warm humid air flow from the southwest in the lower-level creating atmospheric instability. This produced a single cell cumulonimbus cloud in the vicinity of Baengnyeongdo, and due to baroclinic instability, shear and cyclonic vorticity the cloud further developed into a multicellular convection. The cloud system moved southeast towards Seoul metropolitan area accompanied by lightning, heavy precipitation and strong wind gusts. In addition, atmospheric instability due to daytime insolation caused new convective cells to develop in the upstream part of the Sobaek Mountain which merged with existing multicellular convection creating a larger system. This case was unusual because the system was affected little by the upper-level jet stream which is typical in Korea. The development and propagation of the multicellular convection showed strong mesoscale characteristics and was not governed by large synoptic-scale dynamics. In particular, the system moved southeast crossing the Peninsula diagonally from northwest to southeast and did not follow the upper-level westerly pattern. The analysis result shows that the movement of the system can be determined by the vertical wind shear.

The typhoon, heavy rain, blizzard, storm and heavy snowfall had the main caused of natural disasters occurred in Korea from 1993 to 2002. Among them, typhoon has responsible for biggest disaster, recording about 47.4% of total economic damage. Typhoons concentrated mostly in the months from June to October. The average occurrence number in those months ranged from 3.9 to 5.5 based on 30 years of record(1971-2000). However, the numbers increased from 4.0 to 6.2 during the most recent 10 years(1991-2000). Jeju province, among others in Korea, was most frequently affected by typhoon which occurred 23 times during the period of 1991-2000. Typhoons which occurred from July to early August have passed mostly through the west of Jeju, whereas, those of late August to September have passed through the center and eastern sea area of Jeju. The typhoons 'Ramasun' and 'Rusa' caused severe damage in Jeju area in September 2003 and the surge heights were +39cm and +77cm, respectively. The main cause of the damage was surge height which was highly associated with the tidal phase at the time of typhoon passage. The damage caused by typhoon on the aquaculture, fishing boat and harbor cosatline wall around Jeju Island which was amounted to be 417 billion won(\) during the recent 3 years(2002-2004)
Accurately predicting localized heavy rainfall is challenging without high-resolution mesoscale cloud information in the numerical model's initial field, as precipitation intensity and amount vary significantly across regions. In the Korean Peninsula, the radar observation network covers the entire country, providing high-resolution data on hydrometeors which is suitable for data assimilation (DA). During the pre-processing stage, radar reflectivity is classified into hydrometeors (e.g., rain, snow, graupel) using the background temperature field. The mixing ratio of each hydrometeor is converted and inputted into a numerical model. Moreover, assimilating saturated water vapor mixing ratio and decomposing radar radial velocity into a three-dimensional wind vector improves the atmospheric dynamic field. This study presents radar DA experiments using a numerical prediction model to enhance the wind, water vapor, and hydrometeor mixing ratio information. The impact of radar DA on precipitation prediction is analyzed separately for each radar component. Assimilating radial velocity improves the dynamic field, while assimilating hydrometeor mixing ratio reduces the spin-up period in cloud microphysical processes, simulating initial precipitation growth. Assimilating water vapor mixing ratio further captures a moist atmospheric environment, maintaining continuous growth of hydrometeors, resulting in concentrated heavy rainfall. Overall, the radar DA experiment showed a 32.78% improvement in precipitation forecast accuracy compared to experiments without DA across four cases. Further research in related fields is necessary to improve predictions of mesoscale heavy rainfall in South Korea, mitigating its impact on human life and property.
To identify the inflow and outflow characteristics of allchthonous organic matters and examine the change of allochthonous organic matter load pattern due to the climate change, we investigated the temporal variations of DOC and POC concentrations within inflow water and dam discharge water and spatio-temporal distribution of POM within the lake water in Lake Soyang which is the largest dam reservoir in Korea in 2006. Most of allochthonous DOC flowed into the lake water during initial rain and was not affected by the amount of precipitation, whereas most of allochthonous POC flowed into during concentrated heavy rain and the concentration of POC was significantly associated with the amount of inflow water and precipitation. Calculated annual allochthonous organic matter loads in Lake Soyang from 2003 to 2006 using the regression equation between the amount of inflow water and the concentration of POC indicate allochthonous organic matter loads are mainly affected by total influx and extreme influx of inflow water. The spatio-temporal distribution of POM indicated allochthonous organic matter of inflow river during flood period in July transported from upper part to middle and lower part of the lake a month later respectively along the middle layer of water column in Lake Soyang.
