  • We propose a method generating elemental images for the integral imaging using 4-step phaseshifting digital holography. Phase shifting digital holography is a way recording the digital hologram by changing the phase of the reference beam and extracting the complex field of the object beam. Since all 3D information is captured by phase-shifting digital holography, the elemental images for any specifications of the lens array can be generated from single phase-shifting digital holography. In experiment, phase-shifting is achieved by rotating half- and quarter- wave plates and the resultant interference patterns are captured by a $3272{\times}2469$ pixel CCD camera with $27{\mu}m{\times}27{\mu}m$ pixel size.

  • Virtual holography is a methodology of synthesizing apparent three-dimensional images from two-dimensional photographs. Since the input is photographic images of real objects, the degree of realism exceeds that offered by any computer-aided design software. The three-dimensional appearance is given in real-time by images from arbitrary viewing directions. If infinitely many photographs were taken and pasted together, virtual holography would have been trivial. But, the (infinite) storage requirement would prohibit such an attempt.

  • A three-dimensional (3D) display system based on computer-generated integral photography (CGIP) is proposed and its feasibility is discussed. Instead of the pickup process in conventional If, the elemental images of imaginary objects are computer-generated. Using these images, we observed autostereoscopic 3D images in full color and full parallax. The lateral and depth resolutions of the integrated images are limited by some factors such as the image position, object thickness, the lens width, and the pixel size of display panel.

  • We introduce a process for optically reconstructing full-color holographic images recorded by optical scanning holography. A complex RGB-color hologram was recorded and converted into a binary hologram using a direct binary search (DBS) algorithm. The generated binary hologram was then optically reconstructed using a spatial light modulator. The discrepancies between the reconstructed object sizes and colors due to chromatic aberration were corrected by adjusting the reconstruction parameters in the DBS algorithm. To the best of our knowledge, this represents the first optical reconstruction of a full-color hologram recorded by optical scanning holography.

  • In this paper we examine and compare the computational speeds of three-dimensional (3D) object recognition by use of digital holography based on central unit processing (CPU) and graphic processing unit (GPU) computing. The holographic fringe pattern of a 3D object is obtained using an in-line interferometry setup. The Fourier matched filters are applied to the complex image reconstructed from the holographic fringe pattern using a GPU chip for real-time 3D object recognition. It is shown that the computational speed of the 3D object recognition using GPU computing is significantly faster than that of the CPU computing. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on comparisons of the calculation time of the 3D object recognition based on the digital holography with CPU vs GPU computing.

  • Since Leith and Upatnieks demonstrated the first optical hologram in 1964, hologram technology has attracted a great deal of interest in a wide range of optical fields owing to its potential use in future optical applications such as holographic imaging and optical data storage. Although there have been considerable efforts to develop holographic technologies using conventional optics, critical issues still hinder future development. Recently, metasurfaces composed of artificially fabricated subwavelength structures have been considered as novel holographic devices that show an unprecedented ability to control electromagnetic waves. In this review, we outline the recent progress in metasurface holography. A general introduction to several types of metasurface holography categorized based on their physics and application is provided. Then, our personal perspective on the future of this field is discussed.

  • A new optical one-time password (OTP) authentication method using digital holography is proposed, which enhances security strength in the authentication system. A challenge-response optical OTP algorithm based on two-factor authentication is presented using two-step phase-shifting digital holography, and two-way authentication is also performed using challenge-response handshake in both directions. Identification (ID), password (PW), and OTP are encrypted with a shared key by applying phase-shifting digital holography, and these encrypted pieces of information are verified by each party by means of the shared key. The encrypted digital holograms are obtained by Fourier-transform holography and are recorded on a CCD with 256 quantized gray-level intensities. Because the intensity pattern of such an encrypted digital hologram is distributed randomly, it guards against a replay attack and results in higher security level. The proposed method has advantages, in that it does not require a time-synchronized OTP, and can be applied to various authentication applications. Computer experiments show that the proposed method is feasible for high-security OTP authentication.

  • Digital holography is a computational operation and photo-electronic technology that enables calculating, encoding, and reconstructing a 3D scene based on the interference of a coherent light-wave field. The spatial light modulator in a holographic 3D display decodes a computer-generated hologram to optically regenerate a 3D scene in various depths, thus facilitating to match convergence and accommodation of the human eyes. This paper introduces recent technologies related with the content for digital holography called an ultimate 3D display.
