  • This paper presents the effects of cylinder shell elasticity on effective bulk modulus of oil $K_e$ in automotive hydraulic dampers. A theoretical model of cylinder shell bulk modulus $K_c$ based on the elasticity theory of thick-walled cylinder incorporating not only radial but longitudinal deformation is proposed. In a cylinder, values of $K_c$ by the new model and traditional models are computed and the discrepancies among them are discussed. In a twin-tube type automotive damper, the variation of $K_e$ under different pressure values in chambers of the damper cylinder, based on different theoretical models for $K_c$ is computed. Through these computations, it is shown that remarkable discrepancies in computed values of $K_e$ might occur according to the $K_e$ models in connection with $K_c$ models.

  • Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is routinely recommended for dental diagnosis and treatment planning. CBCT exposes patients to less radiation than does conventional CT. Still, lack of proper education among dentists and specialists is resulting in improper referral for CBCT. In addition, aiming to generate high-quality images, operators may increase the radiation dose, which can expose the patient to unnecessary risk. This letter advocates appropriate radiation dosing during CBCT to the benefit of both patients and dentists, and supports moving from the concept of "as low as reasonably achievable" (ALARA) to "as low as diagnostically acceptable" (ALADA).

  • The purpose of the study was to evaluation of the radiation dose reduction using various automatic exposure control (AEC) systems in different manufactures multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT). We used three different manufacturers for the study: General Electric Healthcare, Philips Medical systems and Siemens Medical Solutions. The general scanning protocol was created for the each examination with the same scanning parameters as many as possible. In the various AEC systems, the evaluation of reduced-dose was evaluated by comparing to fixed mAs with using body phantom. Finally, when we applied to AEC for three manufacturers, the radiation dose reduction decreased each 35.3% in the GE, 58.2% in the Philips, and 48.6% in the Siemens. This applies to variety of the AEC systems which will be very useful to reduce the dose and to maintain the high quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop an automatic algorithm to detect the arousal events. The proposed method is based on time-frequency analysis and the support vector machine classifier using single channel electroencephalogram. To extract features, first we computed 6 indices to find out the information of sleep states. Next powers of each of 4 frequency bands were computed using spectrogram of arousal region. And finally we computed variations of power of EEG frequency to detect arousals. The performance has been assessed using polysomnographic recordings of twenty patients with sleep apnea, snoring and excessive daytime sleepiness. We have shown that proposed method was effective for detecting the arousal events.

  • Aspergilloma of the maxillary sinus is considered rare in immunocompetent patients, but a considerable increase has recently been seen in the incidence of reported cases. Dental procedures involving the antral region are thought to predispose individuals to this form of aspergillosis. Because aspergilloma shares similar clinical features with other sinus pathologies, its diagnosis may be delayed. Thus, an early diagnosis confirmed by a histopathological examination plays a crucial role in the adequate management of aspergilloma. This article provides a concise review of the reported cases of aspergilloma associated with dental procedures and reports 2 new cases of aspergilloma in middle-aged female patients, with a presentation of their cone-beam computed tomographic findings.

  • In this study, the effects of inclined shaft angle on the hydro-acoustic performance of cavitating marine propellers are investigated by a numerical method developed before and Brown's empirical formula. The cavitating blades are represented by source and vortex elements. The cavity characteristics of the blades such as cavitation form, cavity volume, cavity length etc., are computed at a given cavitation number and at a set advance coefficient. A lifting surface method is applied for these calculations. The numerical lifting surface method is validated with experimental results of DTMB 4119 model benchmark propeller. After calculation of hydrodynamic characteristics of the cavitating propeller, noise spectrum and overall sound pressure level (OASPL) are computed by Brown's equation. This empirical equation is also validated with another numerical results found in the literature. The effects of inclined shaft angle on thrust coefficient, torque coefficient, efficiency and OASPL values are examined by a parametric study. By modifying the inclination angles of propeller, the thrust, torque, efficiency and OASPL are computed and compared with each other. The influence of the inclined shaft angle on cavity patterns on the blades are also discussed.

  • Central giant cell lesions are rare, benign, osteolytic, pseudocystic, solitary, localized lesions that are common in the skeletal structure, but less so in the maxillofacial region. Furthermore, to perform panoramic radiography and cone-beam computed tomography, it is necessary to prepare patients properly and to position their heads carefully. However, this can be difficult in pediatric patients, who may be anxious. In this report, we describe the case of a central giant cell lesion of the mandible in a 2-year-old girl that was evaluated with multidetector computed tomography.

  • In this paper we proposed a model that the deformation of the submerged rubble mound breakwaters composed with materials of various size, induced by wave action, can be computed. The water particle kinematics by waves in porous mound structure are computed by CADMAS-SURF, then the deformation of structure is computed using DEM module. To investigate the interaction of wave and sectional deformation of structures, analysis is accomplished by two steps. Analysis at the first step is executed with incipient mound. And analysis at the second step is executed with deformed mound by wave action. Furthermore, behaviors of materials are influenced by various properties such as the contact stiffness and the friction angle. Therefore, in order to present the behavior of the element caused by various properties, computations are accomplished with random coefficients by using the Monte Carlo simulation.

  • We describe a backprojection filtering method for limited angle tomography. In order to reduce blur artifacts originated from the out-of-planes and control high-frequency noise, we employed two band-limited window functions, and which were realized by Hann filters in this study. Based on the experimentally measured data, the performance of the developed method is demonstrated by comparing with the conventional shift-and-add and filtered backprojection methods. Application of the developed method to the dental imaging has a potential to be used for the preoperative evaluation of the jaw for dental implants with much reduced patient dose instead of the conventional dental computed tomography.

  • In this paper analytical and numerical methods fur analysis of solidification of castings are described, and the matrix method, one of numerical method, where the nodal point is designated on the element boundary was adapted. The cooling curve obtained by experimental values, when cast steel (0.29%C. 0.62%Si) was poured into $CO_2$ mold, is compared with that of computed values by exploiting computer (V77-600 Data Proceeding System, UNIVAC). The computed value is nearly approximation to the experimental. But the computed value shows a tendency that is a little higher than the experimental in solid-liquid coexisting temperature ranges and much lower than the experimental after solidification. It is considered to result from the lacks and difficulties of ultimately appropriate adaptation of various physical properties and also air cap between castings and mold.
