Polymer/wood flour composites are recently attracting a lot of interest because they are economic and ecofriendly. In this study, the effects of wood flour size on the thermal and mechanical properties of a polypropylene/wood flour composite were investigated. Mechanical properties of the composite samples prepared by melt-mixing and compression molding were tested by UTM and an izod impact tester, and thermal properties of them were measured by TGA, DMA, DSC and TMA. The best coupling agent was selected by testing three kinds of maleic anhydride modified polypropylene coupling agents, and under the same condition, the effects of wood flour size on the physical properties of the composite were investigated. According to the test results for four different wood flour sizes of 600, 250, 180 and $150{\mu}m$, flexural strength, flexural modulus, crystallinity and water-resistivity of the composite increased with decreasing wood flour size.
This study was carried out to clarify the mechanical behaviour of the earlywood and the latewood to the compressive load applied parallel to the grain. The results from the analysis of Japanese cedar wood (Cryptomeria japonica) were used to introduce a concept on stress-strain behaviour of the earlywood and the latewood. There was a significant differences in the mechanical behaviour of the earlyWood and the latewood. In the earlywood, the rate of cell wall upon annual ring was almost similar and the strain increased linearly with the stress increased. However, the rate of cell wall upon annual ring varied in the latewood and the strain of that increased curve-linearly with the stress increased. The longitudinal compression modulus of elasticity (MOE) variation by loading speed on latewood specimens and earlywood specimens shows no significant difference. The modulus of rupture (MOR) and MOE of latewood were about 4 times higher than those of earlywood.

Recently, as the alternatives to preserve environment such as effective usage of wastes or unusable resources are drawing attentions, researches and measures for the two tasks, which are reuse of waste wood and development of eco-friendly materials, are being examined and established in various fields. However, they are still insufficient. Therefore, in this study, for the efficient application of waste woods and eco-friendly effects, mortar was produced using sawdust as the waste wood and mineral material cement for combination, in order to produce inorganic boards using waste woods, which were made when sawing. This study attempted to suggest a basic material about the physical properties of mortar, which used waste woods, after examining the features of wood mixture rate, water-cement rate, congelation according to the mixture rate of the setting accelerator, specific gravity, compression intensity, and bending intensity as experiment factors.
For the purpose of finding new uses for Miscanthus sinensis var. purpurascens, this study first constructed boards with the particles of the plant and impregnated them with phenolic resin at resin impregnation rates of 30 ± 2%, 40 ± 2%, 50 ± 2%, and 60 ± 2%. The impregnated boards were then carbonized at the carbonization temperature of 800℃, after which their density and mechanical properties were examined according to the different resin impregnation rates. The results showed that density, flexural strength performance, Brinell hardness, and compressive strength increased as the resin impregnation rate increased, thus affecting the physical and mechanical properties of the ceramics made of M. sinensis var. purpurascens particles.
Wood cell-wall modification with acetic anhydride, lumen filled with styren monomer and methyl methacrylate, and a combination of these two treatments were studied for their effectiveness for dimensional stability. Compared to those of untreated Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc and sole acetylated red pine, The combination of acetylation and impregnation with methy methacrylate greatly reduced water absorption, increased ASE to the best and gave better bending strength and compression strength.

As the result of implementing a treated material test and durability test after quickly drying S.P.F. species, a type of softwood structural material, within a short period time, soaking it in liquid phosphate flame proof agent for an hour, microwave heating it, and compressing it from 3.8cm to 1cm, when setting the appropriate heating time of microwave heating at 7 minutes at 5kW, it is observed that it satisfies the target water content (4~5%). It is shown that in a water content measurement of the wood that is compressed after being softened by soaking in the flame proof agent, drying and heating at 3kW for 9 minutes, all specimens satisfied 12~14%, the appropriate water content for exterior wood. Also, it is shown that in terms of the flame performance obtained through a flame resistance treatment of the compressed wood and a treated material test, the specimen soaked in flame proof agent for 30 minutes was the most excellent, and that the performance test result of the compressed wood in all areas, such as nail withdrawal resistance, compression, bending strength, and shearing strength, were all improved in their mechanical features to twice to three times better performances.
Round piles of Korean larch were excavated from the foundation of ex-Chosunchongdokbu (ex-Chosun Governer-General Building), which was constructed in 1916 and dismantled later in 1996. By the record (Huh, 1996), the Korean larch logs were logged from the Yalu river area near Mt. Baekdu in North Korea. At present, however, Korean larch is not so popular in South Korea. The latewood ratio profiles and strength properties (longitudinal compression, shear, longitudinal tensile, and bending) were obtained. The ratio of latewood from pith to bark increased up to 25 years, and then it showed constant tendency at 40% with some variances. From the microscopic observation, however, the latewood ratio decreased from the heartwood to the sapwood. Compression strength was greater and bending strength was a little lower than the previous reports (references 13~15), which might be attributed to the strength reduction of old structural members by aging or damage in the compression specimens than the bending ones. The flat-grained specimens for the shear and tension test showed higher coefficient of variation (COV) than the edge-grained ones. For the better comparison of results, in case of shear and tensile strength tests, the strength values of the edge-grained specimens were thought to be adopted rather than those of flat-grained ones.
The physical, mechanical and chemical properties of old and new Korean red pine (Pinus densiflora) were analyzed. The old woods were from dismantled timbers of Bonjungsa temple. The crystallized resin in the latewood was observed by microscopic analysis. Also, reduction of specific gravity, occurrence of microscopic cleavage of tracheid was observed in the old wood. The angle of microscopic cleavage of tracheid is estimated with the same angle of micro-fibril angle of 52 layer. The bending, compression and shear strength of old world were decreased about 35-27% than those of new wood. Dynamic modulus of elasticity measured by ultrasonic nondestructive test has the tendency of reducing by the time elapse of the wood usage. Therefore, deterioration of wood could be measured by reduction of specific gravity and dynamic MOE. The static MOE and mechanical properties of old wood could be predictable by measuring dynamic MOE in the longitudinal direction. Extractives of the old wood in 1-% NaOH solution are larger quantity than new wood. Therefore the decay of the wood could be evaluated by analyzing the chemical compound, especially 1-% NaOH solution. The results of this research could be used for understanding and prediction of the changing properties with elapsing time of wood.
This study has been made to make an observation regarding present status of the coal mine props which is desperately needed for coal production, despite of great shortage of the timber resources in this country, and investigate the effects of diffusion process on the decay resistances of the mine props as applied preservatives of Malenit and chromated zinc chloride. The results are as follows. 1. Present status of the coal mine props Total demand of coal mine props in the year of 1975 was approximately 456 thousand cubic meters. The main species used for mine props are conifer (mainly Pinus densiflora) and hardwood (mainly Quercus). Portions between them are half and half. With non fixed specification, wide varieties of timber in size and form are used. And volume of wood used per ton of coal production shows also wide range from 0.017 cubic meter to 0.03 cubic meter. 2. Decay resistance test a) The oven dry weight decreased between untreated specimen and treated specimen has not shown any significantly, although it has shown some differences in average values between them. It may be caused by the shorter length of the test. b) The strength of compression test between untreated specimen and treated specimen has also shown the same results as shown in case of weight decrease. Reasons assumed are the same. c) The amounts of the extractives in one percent of sodium hydroxide (NaOH) between untreated and treated specimen have shown the large value in case of untreated specimen than that of treated. 3. The economical benifit between untreated and treated wood when applied in field has seen better in long tenn base in case of treated wood, although the primary cost of treated wood add a little bit more cost than that of the untreated wood.

The physical and mechanical characteristics of 10 Indonesian wood species were investigated. Mangium, Gandaria and Rambutan showed higher density. Mangium, Gandaria and Mangga appeared lower in shrinkage, and the ratio of tangential/radial was low in Albizia, Kupa and Mangga. The compression strength parallel to the grain and hardness were high in Mangium and Nangka. Gmelina, Mangium, Gandaria, Kupa, Nangka and Rambutan had valuable properties for commercial wood materials. Consequently, it is considered that the results of this study could be useful basic data for the improved use of planted and promising species in Indonesia.
