  • Compression, lateral, and opposite woods in the stem and branch of rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum Lamb.), a softwood species indigenous to New Zealand, were described and compared in the anatomical aspects. Qualitatively, growth rings were wide in the compression wood, intermediate in the lateral wood, and narrow in the opposite wood. Tracheid transition from early wood to late wood was very gradual in the compression wood but was more abrupt in both the lateral and opposite woods. When viewed transversely, compression wood tracheids showed a roundish outline except at the growth ring boundary but lateral and opposite wood tracheids were angular to rectangular in outline. Intercellular spaces were occasionally detected in the compression wood except in the late wood at the growth ring boundary but were absent from both the lateral and opposite woods. Slit-like extensions of the bordered pit openings caused by the location of pit apertures within short and narrow helical grooves were observed in the compression wood tracheids but not in the opposite or lateral wood tracheids. In the compression wood tracheids, fine striations in the form of fine checks or grooves were observed on the lumen surfaces and the innermost $S_3$ layer of secondary wall was absent. In the tracheids of lateral and opposite woods, the $S_3$ layer was sometimes absent but occasionally highly developed. Cross-field pits in the compression wood appeared to be piceoid due to slit-like pit apertures but those in the lateral and opposite wood tracheids showed cupressoid to taxodioid. Quantitatively, compression wood tracheids were somewhat shorter than those of opposite or lateral wood in stem but not different from the opposite or lateral wood tracheids in branch. The walls were thicker in the compression wood than in the lateral or opposite wood. Uniseriate rays in the compression wood were fewer than in the lateral or opposite wood.

  • A study was conducted to evaluate the dynamic mechanical properties (modulus of elasticity, resonant frequency and interanal friction) of compression wood in Pinus densiflora. Vibration method was used for estimation of dynamic modulus of elasticity and the values were compared to those of static bending modulus of elasticity. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The dynamic modulus of elasticity of compression wood decreased, whereas that of normal wood increased, with increasing specific gravity. 2. The resonant frequency of compression wood decreased, whereas that of normal wood increased, with increasing specific gravity. 3. The internal friction of compression wood increased with increasing specific gravity. 4. The correlation coefficients between dynamic and static moduli of elasticity in compression and normal woods were high.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the surface hardness of thermally-compressed larch wood by compression set and temperature. The surface hardness of thermally-compressed larch wood increased with increasing compression set and temperature. For compression set 60%, the specific gravity was increased as 0.93. However, the surface hardness was lower value as 31.1 N/$mm^2$ compared with a similar specific gravity of the tropical timber. For density profile, less than compression set 40%, compression was observed mainly surface area. On the other hand, more than 50%, density profile variation was reduced by compression of central part. Results of this study indicate that thermally-compressed larch wood can be replace some imported hardwoods such as oak or cherry. However, thermally-compressed larch wood was difficult to replace the tropical timber being imported in terms of surface hardness.

  • This study was carried out to estimate the property of dimensional stability of heat compression of italian poplar wood with low density. Firstly, two levels of pressure conditions were applied using the closed and open-press system. The thermal treatment temperatures were 180℃ and 200℃, respectively. Water absorption tests were conducted in water bath at 25℃ and 100℃ for 35 hours and 1 hour, respectively. The compression rates of wood were 47 percent, 60 percent, and 73 percent, respectively. From these tests, it was found that the dimensional stability of the closed-press system was superior to that of the open-press system. Furthermore, the dimensional stability of compressed wood in the closed-press system was better at 200℃ than 180℃. In compression rate, dimensional stability of 73 percent compression rate was the best result. Considering these results, the best conditions for the dimensional stability of compressed wood were those of the closed-compressing system at high temperatures above 200℃ and larger compression rate. Therefore, it was concluded that the dimensional stability of wood is improved at higher temperature and larger deformation.

  • Anatomical characteristics on abnormal type of bisected compression woods and light colored wood intervened between these dark colored compression woods on under part and their respective opposite woods on upper parts of cross section in Pinus densiflora S. et Z. stem were compared through optical microscopic investigation. and the obtained results were summarized as follows: 1. Tracheid length increased linearly as the number of rings from the pith increases in all investigated parts, but increasing tendency in tracheid length was similar within bisected two compression woods and their opposite woods. 2. Tracheids were the shortest in bisected two compression woods and tracheid length in intervened wood between these two compression woods was longer than in compression woods but shorter than in the opposite woods. 3. Bisected two compression woods and intervened wood between these two compression woods revealed similar features in tracheid transition from springwood to summerwood, intercellular space, tracheid entanglement, and cross sectional view of tracheid. but spiral check was observed only in these two compression woods, therefore the intervened wood between these two compression woods disclosed anatomical characteristics similar to, not typical of, compression woods.

  • This study investigated the effect of steaming on fixation of compression set and the effect of these treatments on mechanical properties of heat-compressed wood specimens. To determine the effect of steaming after compression set, wood specimens were compressed for 100min at 180f and then steamed for 20-100min at $120^{\circ}C$. Swelling tests were used to evaluate recovery of compression set. Bending, compression, and Brinell hardness tests were carried out for evaluating mechanical properties. Compressed wood steamed for 100 min at $120^{\circ}C$ showed 1.9% recovery of set, increases in bending and compressive properties, and no hardness change. We concluded that almost complete fixation of compression set in wood can be achieved by steaming compressed wood.

  • Single pellet press technology allows for fast, low-cost, and small-scale tests to investigate pelletizing characteristics. We estimated proper compression ratios for five Korean domestic wood species through predicted relationships between pelletizing pressure Px and compression ratio based on experimental data obtained from a single pellet press unit. The pressures required to obtain a 6-mm-diam pellet of density 1200 kg/㎥ were estimated as 111 MPa for Populus davidiana, 133 MPa for Robinia pseudoacacia, 136 MPa for Quercus mongolica, 97 MPa for Pinus densiflora, and 127 MPa for Pinus rigida. On the basis of these pressures, we estimated proper compression ratios to be within the range 7.676-8.410 for these species, and we found the compression ratios needed for hardwood species to be somewhat higher than those needed for softwood species to obtain the pellet density of 1200 kg/㎥.

  • This study was carried out to assess the dimensional stability of wood material treated by plastic processing for bentwood and compression wood. The evaluation method was different between two wood materials, but the treatments for them were very similar to each other. One of the main methods is heat treatment with sufficient water vapor. In bentwood, the used species were painted maple (Acer mono), bitter wood (Picrasma quassioides) and birch (Betula schmidtii). Steaming was the worst treatment method for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. The best results could be attained with PEG treatment for dimensional stabilization of bentwood. Dimensional stability of bitter wood was found to be conspicuous. However the steaming treatment at lower temperatures, i.e., about $130^{\circ}C$ was not suitable for dimensional stability of bentwood. In compression wood, the used specimen was Italian poplar wood (Populus euramericana). Two heat compressive pressing conditions, an open-press system and an air-tighten closed-press system, were used. The recovery rate was measured after boiling and/or absorbing in water to estimate the dimensional stability of heat compressed wood. The best dimensional stability of compressed wood in the air-tighten closed-press system was found to be better at $200^{\circ}C$ than $180^{\circ}C$. The best compression rate for dimensional stability was 73 percent.
