  • Sands distributed in Jeju island's coastal areas, Korea, can be classified as silicate sand derived from volcanic rock, carbonate sand derived from shells, and mixed sands containing both silicate and carbonate sands. These three types of sands typically exist in Jeju coastal areas. Samples of silicate, carbonate and mixed sands were obtained from Samyang beach, Gimnyeong beach, and Jeju harbor area, respectively. Compression tests were conducted to assess the compression characteristics of these sands. As a result of these tests, each sand showed different behaviors. For Samyang beach sand, it appeared that initial compression is a larger than the other two sands. For Cimnyeong and Jeju harbor sands, however, the additional compression occurred after initial compression. This could result from the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of sand particles. In addition, settlement behavior of Jeju harbor ground according to the construction stages was analyzed using the measured data. It showed that in addition to the initial elastic compression, a considerable additional compression occurred with time. The settlements of Jeju harbor ground were predicted by using the elastic settlement calculation methods (empirical methods) and the compression test method. The empirical methods, which did not consider the crushing, shattering, and rearrangement of particles could show smaller result than that occurring actually.

  • Concrete is a material popularly used in construction. Due to the load-bearing and external environmental factors during utilization or manufacturing, its surface is prone to flaws, such as crack and leak. To repair these superficial defects and ultimately and avoid the deterioration of the concrete's durability, numerous concrete surface protective coatings and crack repair products have been developed. Currently, studies are endeavoring to exploit the mineralization property of microbial strains for repairing concrete cracks be the repairing material for crack rehabilitation. This research aims to use bacteria, specifically B. pasteurii, in crack rehabilitation to enhance the flexural and compression strength of the repaired concrete. Serial tests at various bacterial concentrations and the same $Urea-CaCl_2$ medium concentration of 70% for crack rehabilitation were executed. The results prove that the higher the concentration of the bacterial broth, the greater the amount of calcium carbonate precipitate was induced, while using B. pasteurii broth was for crack rehabilitation. The flexural and compression strengths of the repaired concrete test samples were the greatest at 100% bacterial concentration. Compared to the control group (bacterial concentration of 0%), the flexural strength had increased by 32.58% for 1-mm crack samples and 51.01% for 2-mm crack samples, and the compression strength had increased by 28.58% and 23.85%, respectively. From the SEM and XRD test results, a greater quantity of rectangular and polygonal crystals was also found in samples with high bacterial concentrations. These tests all confirm that using bacteria in crack rehabilitation can increase the flexural and compression strength of the repaired concrete.

  • Highly plastic clays in their normally consolidated states are not always linear but are concave downwards. Thus their compression index deceases with the increase of consolidation pressure. The $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ curves of plastic or non-plastic silty clays are not linear but are convex upwards. In this paper, consolidation tests were conducted with several undisturbed field soils of Korea south coast and their $e-{\log}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are not always linear. In case of using Butterfield's method(liquid limit 50~100%), ${\ln}{\upsilon}-{\ln}{\sigma}_{\upsilon}{\prime}$ plots are linear. But some undisturbed samples which have void ratio over 2.24, liquid limit over 100% and plasticity index over 60% are not linear. In results of consolidation tests with remolded samples which contain silt(fly ash) contents of 90% has compression index increasing with the increase in consolidation pressure.

  • Decomposed granite soils are in a wide range of conditions depending on the degrees of weathering. This paper is intended to examine laboratory tests such as consolidation tests and conventional triaxial compression tests conducted in order to find out the mechanical properties of Cheongju granite soil. Along with the foregoing, the results of basic physical tests conducted in order to grasp the physical properties of Cheongju granite soil were described and based on the results, methods to calculate the mechanical parameters of numerical approaches using Lade's double surface work-hardening constitutive model were examined. Finally, it is intended to explain the stress properties of Cheongju granite soil used as a geotechnical material based on its shear behavior and critical state concept using the results of isotropic consolidation tests and triaxial compression tests. As a conclusion, it can be seen that in the relationship between confining stress and maximum deviator stress, the slope is maintained at a constant value of 2.95. In the drained CTC test, maximum deviator stress generally existed in a range of axial strain of 6~8% and larger dilatancy phenomena appeared when confining stress was smaller. Finally, based on the results of the CTC tests on Cheongju granite soil, although axial strain, deviator stress and pore water pressure showed mechanical properties similar to those of overconsolidated soil, Cheongju granite soil showed behavior similar to that of normally consolidated soil in terms of volumetric strain.

  • Nowadays, cast ingots has been used as preforms for forging to reduce the cost and the number of processes. In this study, the forging ability of Al cast alloys was investigated by using hot compression tests. Hot compression behavior of the cast Al alloys has been studied The flow stress increased by decreasing the compression temperature and by increasing the strain rate. In case of melt treatment the flow stress decreased comparing to untreated A356.0 Al alloy. Also, We developed the various forged lower control arm using the cast preform. The optimum design of product and cast preform was investigated After Prototyping of Al forged lower arm, durability and buckling test were performed.

  • In order to find effective linerboard compositions for the corrugated fibreboard containers for apples, we have evaluated the strength and the cost effectiveness of the various linerboards and corrugated fibreboard containers. From the results, we suggest SC240, WLK210 or SK180 for the outer liners, M180 to M250 for the mediums, and K2200 or Al80 for the inner liners, respectively. Furthermore, we recommend two cost effective types of corrugated fibreboard compositions, SC240/S120/S120/M160/A180 for the white face liners, and SK180/M180/S120/M180/A180 for the color face liners. Evidence has been presented to support the conclusion that the new high compression strength corrugated fibreboard containers have better performance in the compression and bursting strength tests, while reducing material costs by thirty four percents.

  • Dredged soil from sea has much higher water content than liquid limit of clay and even if small loads apply, it will suffer a great settlement. Therefore it is very difficult to perform a consolidation test with general consolidation apparatus because of high water content. In this study Rowe Cell Apparatus consolidation tests have been performed with 1 remolding clay of water content 56% and 4 slurry clays of a water content of 100%, 120%, 133% and 150%. From the test results the consolidation characteristics such as compression index, secondary compression index and consolidation coefficient have been investigated with a variation of water content of dredged soil. The equations to get consolidation constants such as a compression index, a consolidation coefficient have been proposed with the field water content.

  • In order to restrain the local necking during stretching of sheet metals, the combined stretching processes with simultaneous compression are proposed. The combined stretching tests with two types of compression to top of the cup were carried out using the pure aluminum sheets; (1) stroke control loading process and (2) pinpoint loading process. It was clarified that the metal flow in the cross-section of the cup is affected significantly both by the magnitude of load and the stroke in the compression process. It was also found that the local necking can be restrained effectively by the metal flow from center of the cup and therefore the forming limit is improved.
