  • Low pressure die casting and flow forming have been successfully used to produce sound road wheels from magnesium alloy AM80. In the current study, high speed compression testing was initially conducted to simulate the flow forming of a Mg wheel. Subsequently the flow forming was simulated with "Forge$^{TM}$", an FEM software package. On the basis of flow forming simulations, the flow forming of the Mg wheel was performed under different conditions. For the flow forming experiments, the preform castings were made by low pressure die casting from AM80, a commercial magnesium alloy. In flow forming of the magnesium preform wheel, the flow forming of the Mg wheel was successfully accomplished when the feed rate was less than half that for the forming of an aluminum road wheel. The reduction in feed rate was 52%. Finally, a comparison with the flow forming simulations was made.

  • Recently, many photovoltaic systems (PV systems) including solar parks and PV farms have been built to prepare for the post fossil fuel era. To investigate the degradation process of the PV systems and thus, efficiently operate PV systems, there is a need to visually monitor PV systems in the range of infrared ray through the Internet. For efficient visual monitoring, this paper explores a multithreaded implementation of a recently developed HEVC standard whose compression efficiency is almost two times higher than H.264. For an efficient parallel implementation under a meshbased 64 multicore system, this work takes into account various design choices which can solve potential problems of a two-dimensional interconnects-based 64 multicore system. These problems may have not occurred in a small-scale multicore system based on a simple bus network. Through extensive evaluation, this paper shows that, for an efficient multithreaded implementation of HEVC intra prediction in a mesh-based multicore system, much effort needs to be made to optimize communications among processing cores. Thus, this work provides three design choices regarding communications, i.e., main thread core location, cache home policy, and maximum coding unit size. These design choices are shown to improve the overall parallel performance of the HEVC intra prediction algorithm by up to 42%, achieving a 7 times higher speed-up.

  • Typically, the seat of an automotive vehicle generally includes a horizontal seat-cushion portion and a vertical seat-back portion that is operatively connected to the seat-cushion portion. The seat may include a recliner for the reclining of the seat-back portion relative to the seat-cushion portion by the seat occupant. An energy absorber or damper can also be provided for the seat-back portion. Because the recliner is configured to be released at a relatively high speed, and it results in an impact at the end of a folding stroke, the damper needs to dissipate energy as the seat back moves with respect to the seat cushion; therefore, the role of the seat damper in the automotive-seat design is important. In this paper, the mechanism of an hydraulic-type automotive-seat damper is investigated, and the torque characteristic is simulated according to the design-parameter variations such as the orifice area and the working-fluid properties.

  • The annual average of energy sources is continuously increasing at a rate of 5.8%, and particularly, the power generation proportion of new/renewable energy is increasing significantly. Furthermore, South Korea has established a national energy master plan for 2008-2030 and is aiming at obtaining approximately 11% of total energy production from the wind turbine sector. Although offshore wind turbines are similar to wind turbines installed on land, they require materials with excellent dynamic properties and durability to prevent damage due to seawater at the lower parts and connecting parts. The lower parts of wind turbines are submerged in seawater, and the upper and lower parts are connected by filling the connecting part with grout. This paper describes the test results of the process of determining the mix ratios to develop ultra-high grout for offshore wind turbines. There is virtually no relevant technology regarding grout for offshore wind turbines in South Korea that can be referenced for the process of determining the mix ratios. Therefore, tests were conducted for determining compression strength, elastic modulus, flexural strength, density, constructability (floor test), and early strength by referencing a high-performance grout produced in South Korea, and the mixing process for achieving the goal strengths was described using the Korean Industrial Standards (KS) as the reference.

  • An integral crank driven Stirling cryocooler is solidly based on concepts of direct IR detector mounting on the cryocooler's cold finger, and the integral construction of the cryocooler and Dewar envelope. Performance factors of the cryocooler depend on operating conditions of the cryocooler such as a cyclic mean pressure of the working fluid, a rotational speed of driving mechanism, a thermal environment, a targeted operation temperature and etc.. At given charging condition of helium gas, the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas in the cryocooler changes with temperatures of the cold end and the environment. In this study, effects of the cyclic mean pressure of helium gas on performances of the Stirling cryocooler were investigated by numerical analyses using the Sage software. The simulation model takes into account thermodynamic losses due to an inefficiency of regenerator, a pressure drop, a shuttle heat transfer and solid conductions. Simulations are performed for the performance variation according to the cyclic mean pressure induced by the temperature of the cold end and the environment. This paper presents P-V works in the compression and expansion space, cooling capacity, contribution of losses in the expansion space.

  • Currently, The new wave of information technology has enormously influenced every field. In the Held of design, it is time to strive possible efforts in order to accumulate the design-related knowledge by maintaining, managing and controlling design information in a systematic manner, getting out of the old stage of mere use of data itself. Due to remarkable progress in communication media and speed, and file compression technology, text-centric data has been shifting to multimedia data such as image and motion picture. So it is currently required that methologies be developed to effectively utilize the related information. With respect to the processing of image data, it is certain that the optimal method should be come up with reflecting the unique characteristics and utilization of image data, apart from the traditional way of processing and storing the legacy text-based data. The study suggests the system of indexing and implementing design image information through the case of analyzing design image data, abstracting data elements of image itself, and finally applying it to building image-oriented database for use.

  • Occupant injury in rear end impact is rapidly becoming one of the most aggravating traffic safety problems with high human suffering and societal costs. Although rear end impact occurs at relatively low speed , it may cause permanent disability due to neck injuries resulting from an abrupt moment, shear force , and tension/compression force at the occipital condyles. The analysis is performed for a combined occupant-eat model response, using the SAFE(Safety Analysis for occupant crash Environment) computer program. The computational results are verified by those from sled tests. A parameter study is conducted for many physical and mechanical properties. Seat design has been performed based on the design of experiment process with respect to five parameters; seat-back upholstery stiffness, torsional stiffness of the seat-back. An orthogonal array is selected from the parameter study. A good design has been found from the analysis results based on the orthogonal array. The results show that reductions of stiffness in seat-back upholstery and joint are the most effective for preventing neck injuries.

  • Since the performance of the circuit breaker mainly depends on the spring operating mechanism, the analysis of the spring operating mechanism is required. The spring, especially closing spring, stores the deformation energy due to the compression and then accelerates the big loads rapidly in the circuit breaker. To accurately carry out the kinematic and dynamic analysis of the circuit breaker, the precise modeling of the spring behavior is necessary. In this paper, the static stiffness of the spring is captured by using the tester. A simple mechanism similar to the spring operating mechanism was designed to generate the release motion of the spring. A high speed camera was used to capture the behavior of the spring. Three types of spring models such as a linear spring model, modal spring model, and nodal spring model are suggested and compared with the experimental results.

  • For the description of the elastic properties of linear objects a convenient parameter is the ratio of the stress to the strain, a parameter called the Young's modulus of the material. Young's modulus can be used to predict the elongation or compression of an object as long as the stress is less than the yield strength of the material. Conventional method for estimating Young's modulus measured the ratio of stress to corresponding strain below the proportional limit of a material using a tensile testing machine. But the method needs precision specimens and expensive equipment. In this paper, we proposed method for estimating Young's modulus using accelerometer. The basic idea comes from that the wave velocity is different as the Young's modulus. To obtain Young's modulus, a group velocity is obtained. It is difficult to measure group velocity. This is because plate medium has a dispersive characteristics which has different wave speed as frequency. In this paper, we used Wigner-Ville distribution to measure group velocity. To verify the proposed method, steel and acryl plate experiments have been performed. Experimental results show that the proposed method is powerful for estimating Young's modulus.
