An experimental study on six axially-loaded composite short columns with different thicknesses of steel tube and that of the concrete plate was carried out. Compared to the mechanical behavior of component specimens under axially compressed, the failure modes, compression deformation, and strain process were obtained. The two main parameters that have a significant enhancement to cross-sectional strength were also analyzed. The failure of an axially loaded UHPC-CFST short column is due to the crushing of the UHPC plate, while the CFST member does reach its maximum resistance. A reduction coefficient K'c, related to the confinement coefficient, is introduced to account for the contribution of CFST members to the ultimate load-carrying capacity of the UHPC-CFST composite short columns. Based on the regression analysis of the relationship between the confinement index ξ and the value of fcc/fc, a unified formula for estimating the axial compressive strength of CFST short columns was proposed, combined with the experimental results in this research, and an equation for reliably predicting the strength of UHPC-CFST composite short columns under axial compression were also proposed.
Rectangular concrete-filled steel tubular (RCFST) column, a type of concrete-filled steel tubular (CFST), is widely used in compression members of structures because of its advantages. This paper proposes a robust machine learning-based framework for predicting the ultimate compressive strength of RCFST columns under both concentric and eccentric loading. The gradient boosting neural network (GBNN), an efficient and up-to-date ML algorithm, is utilized for developing a predictive model in the proposed framework. A total of 890 experimental data of RCFST columns, which is categorized into two datasets of concentric and eccentric compression, is carefully collected to serve as training and testing purposes. The accuracy of the proposed model is demonstrated by comparing its performance with seven state-of-the-art machine learning methods including decision tree (DT), random forest (RF), support vector machines (SVM), deep learning (DL), adaptive boosting (AdaBoost), extreme gradient boosting (XGBoost), and categorical gradient boosting (CatBoost). Four available design codes, including the European (EC4), American concrete institute (ACI), American institute of steel construction (AISC), and Australian/New Zealand (AS/NZS) are refereed in another comparison. The results demonstrate that the proposed GBNN method is a robust and powerful approach to obtain the ultimate strength of RCFST columns.

The composition of convergence cross-section of the material is a technique that provides reasonable design and construction of structures. It is frequently used in medium-sized bridges and architectural structures. However, the structural behavioral spare capacity enhancement of the structure by the application of the convergence cross-section is still limited by the expandability due to the limiting state of each material. In order to overcome these limitations, this study reasonably analyzed the construction stages before and after the convergence cross-section constructed and developed a technique for forming multi-point boundary conditions using struts, which are compression members. Based on the existing cases, a reasonable construction step for forming the material composite section of the entire structural system of the structure was derived, and a numerical analysis model for a specific part was constructed to analyze the behavior of the strut application. As a result of this study, the effect of reducing the sectional force of 7.40% in beam-column joint and 6.31% in the center of girder was derived, and the deflection, which is a measure of the serviceability of the structure, improved by 54.41% from the installation and dismantling of strut members at each construction stage.
Cold-formed steel is widely used in steel structures, especially in transmission towers, because of advantages such as low weight, high strength, excellent mechanical properties, etc. However, there is not a special design code for cold-formed steel use in transmission towers in China. For this study, a total of 105 compression members were tested statically to investigate the bearing capacity of cold-formed steel members under different boundary conditions in transmission towers. The test results were compared to the results predicted by the current design codes. For deeper insight, additional coupled members were simulated using finite element analysis. An improved design method was developed based on the experimental and analytical results.

The purpose of present study is to explore the mechanical behavior of anchorage zones in prestressed concrete members with single and closely-spaced multiple tendon anchorages. The cracking loads and local stress distributions at these anchorage zones are studied. To this end, a series of experiments have been conducted. From this study, it is found that the failure of anchorage zones of the closely-spaced multiple tendon members is initiated by cracking along the tendon path and that the tensile stresses arising in the vicinity of anchorage zone of the first tendon are reduced due to additional compression of the second tendon. This results in the increase of cracking capacity of the member. The effects of multiple tendons are presented in the form of strain distribution and cracking load comparisons.

When a thin walled member is subjected to compression in a condition such as collision, the energy is mainly absorbed by axial crumpling. In this case, dynamic crushing strength of the member is increased due to the effects of strain-rate compared with the static strength, even though the inertia effect is neglected. In this paper, the method of predicting the static crushing for tubular members is presented using the kinematic method of plasticity. Since, a predicted crushing load, taking account of the dynamic yield stress, usually overestimates the effects of strain-rate, the average plastic flow stress for the effects of strain-rate is used to obtain the dynamic crushing load for tubular members. The analytical results are compared with the experiments published in references, and a good correlation is observed.
In locations where the cost or concrete is relatively high, or in situations where the weight or concrete members is to be kept to a minimum, it may be economical to use hollow reinforced concrete vertical members. Hollow reinforced concrete columns with low axial load, moderate longitudinal steel percentage, and a reasonably thick wall were found to perform in a ductile manner at the flexural strength, similar to solid columns. However, hollow reinforced concrete columns with high axial load, high longitudinal steel percentage, and a thin wall were found to behave in a brittle manner at the flexural strength, since the neutral axis is forced to occur away from the inside face of the tube towards the section centroid and, as a result, crushing of concrete occurs near the unconfined inside face of the section. If, however, a steel tube is placed near the inside face of a circular hollow column, the column can be expected not to fail in a brittle manner by disintegration of the concrete in the compression zone. Design recommendation and example by moment-curvature analysis program for curvature ductility are presented. Theoretical moment-curvature analysis for reinforced concrete columns, indicating the available flexural strength and ductility, can be conducted providing the stress-strain relation for the concrete and steel are known. In this paper, a unified stress-stain model for confined concrete by Mander is developed for members with circular sections.
This paper concentrates on the nonlinear analysis of the reinforced concrete flexural members under cyclic loading. To develop a nonlinear material model, concrete is treated as an orthotropic nonlinear material and steel is modeled as an elasto-plastic material. The models for hysteresis behavior with stiffness degradation in compression and for crack opening and closing in tension are included. The finite element computer program for the nonlinear analysis of RC flexural members under cyclic loading is developed. The accuracy and reliabihty of the numerical procedure IS demonstrated by the FEM analysis and test results of underreinforced concrete beams.

As architectures have recently become high-risers and mega-structured, stable high strength products have been ensured. Accordingly, use of precast concrete accouplement has been increased in order to facilitate air compression and rationalize construction. Since not only external heating but a1so internal temperature rise caused by the accumulation of cement hydration heat in manufacturing process, precast concrete members with large cross-section used for high-rise mega-structure's columns and beams may exhibit different temperature history compared to the precast concrete members for wall and sub-floor with relatively small cross-sections. Therefore, this study aims to elucidate the characteristics of temperature history of mass concrete members cast with high-strength concrete fur precast concrete application. In this study, large cross-sectional precast concrete mock-up, unit cement quantity, and temperature histories in manufacturing precast concrete member under different curing condition were inclusively investigated.
This paper presents a discussion of the Finite Element Analysis (FEA) when applied for the analysis of concrete elements reinforced with glass fibre reinforced polymer (GFRP) bars. The purpose of such nonlinear FEA model development is to create a tool that can be used for numerical parametric studies which can be used to extend the existing (and limited) experiment database. The presented research focuses on the numerical analyses of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements. FEA of concrete members reinforced with linear elastic brittle reinforcements (like GFRP) presents unique challenges when compared to the analysis of members reinforced with plastic (steel) reinforcements, which are discussed in the paper. Specifically, the behaviour and failure of GFRP reinforced members are strongly influenced by the compressive response of concrete and thus modelling of concrete behaviour is essential for proper analysis. FEA was performed using the commercial software ABAQUS. A damaged-plasticity model was utilized to simulate the concrete behaviour. The influence of tension, compression, dilatancy, mesh, and reinforcement modelling was studied to replicate experimental test data of beams previously tested at the University of Waterloo, Canada. Recommendations for the finite element modelling of beams reinforced with GFRP longitudinal and shear reinforcements are offered. The knowledge gained from this research allows for the development of a rational methodology for modelling GFRP reinforced concrete beams, which subsequently can be used for extensive parametric studies and the formation of informed recommendations to design standards.
