The changes of soil physico-chemical properties were investigated in the sandy loam soil amended with various application rates of chicken and pig manure composts. After repeated application of the composts for 3 years, total nitrogen content in soil treated with applied 120Mg/ha of chicken and pig manure composts was 2.1 g/kg equally. Organic matter content was 38.8 and 39.1 g/kg, available phosphate content was 602 and 585 mg/kg, and cation exchange capacity(CEC) was 10.1 and 12.4 cmol/kg in chicken and pig manure compost 120 Mg/ha treatment, respectively. Exchangeable K, Ca, Na, Mg contents, and electrical conductivity(EC) increased with the amount of applied compost. Also, with increased amount of applied compost, porosity of soil increased, but hardness, bulk density and Y value decreased.
To find out the repeated application effect of chicken and pig manure composts on tomato growth and soil physico-chemical properties, different rates of the composts were applied to greenhouse soils with low fertility for 3 years and tomato was grown annually. As application rate of compost increased, the growth and fruit yield of tomato increased markedly, and there are also a little increase in sugar content in fruit juice and weight per fruit. When only compost was applied, however, physical and chemical properties in soil showed to be unbalanced such as significantly low bulk density and hardness, and high porosity as well as high organic matter and exchangeable K content, and low exchangeable Ca content than those of optimum range for soil diagnosis. Therefore mixed use of compost and chemical fertilizer is more promising way than the only use of compost to make suitable physico-chemical properties for tomato growth.
Food waste has been widely considered as a recycling resource to be applied to agricultural lands due to the effects of organic matter and nutrient for plant productivity. but the maturity and salt concentration in the compost produced from food waste processing facilities should be considered firstly, which was little information on compost quality produced from food waste treatment facility. In this study, we examined actual situation of food waste processing facility on the composting of food waste and evaluated the characteristics of composts produced from food waste processing facilities. The quality of composts was analyzed on the basis of the criteria of fertilizer processing manual. The 46% of food waste treatment facility registered composting produced actually the compost mixed with food waste or animal waste. The compost maturity and salt concentration as indicators of the quality of compost were not met 46.8% of composts collected from food waste processing facilities to the criteria of fertilizer processing manual. Also, 15.6%(moisture) were not satisfied with the criteria. In conclusion, the compost produced from food waste processing facilities is firstly required with better compost maturity and reduced salt concentration in order to use to agricultural lands as an amendment.

An experiment was conducted to study the dffects of fertilizers on maize tillering. Hybrids used were non-tillering hybrid, Nangano No.1, one of the leading hybrids in Japan and tillering hybrids, IK$_1$ /IRI develored at the Dept. of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, Chungnam National Univ., Taejon, Korea. The experiment was conducted at Dottori Prefecture in Japan. Four fertilizer levels, i. e., standard level, half amount of standard level, standard level plus composts and standard level plus two times of composts currently recommended for farmers were used. Higher fertilizer levels were effective for increasing plant weight of both hybrids. All fresh weight as well dry weight of the whole plants and plant parts of IK$_1$/IRI were higher than those of Nangano No. 1, regardless of fertilizers applied mainly due to the tiller development. The number of tillers per plant of IK$_1$/IRI was increased as the level of fertilizer was increased. Especially in sandy soil, composts seemed to be very effective in increasing tiller number per plant of IK$_1$/IRI.
Objective of this research was to draw the basic criteria of the compost maturity evaluation, by assessing the stability of chemical and physical properties of the bark and piggery manure byproduct composts during the composting. Colors of the mature composts were black and dark brown for the bark and piggery manure by-product composts, respectively. Good earthy odor was detected for both by-product composts after approximately 40 days composting, by which odors of the original raw materials were disappeared. pH and EC of the mature bark: compost were stabilized at 6.5 and 1dS/m, respectively. The respective values for the piggery compost were stabilized at 7.2 and 6dS/m. Organic matter contents were decreased with time to be stabilized at about 60% at the end of composting. During composting, total N contents of the bark and piggery composts were maintained at $1.1{\sim}1.5%$, and $1.5{\sim}2.2%$, respectively. For both fertilizers, $NH_4-N$ contents were increased at the initial stage bur. decreased after the middle stages of decomposition, resulting in the increase of $NO_3-N$ contents. Total inorganic N contents were increased with time. C/N ratios of both mature composts were stabilized at $25{\sim}27$. CEC of the bark compost was increased logarithmically with time and that of mature compost was 87cmol(+)/㎏. CEC of the piggery manure compost was hyperbolic function with rime and reached at 70cmol(+)/㎏ at the mature stage. Crude fiber analysis indicated that relative contents of lignin were increased with composting by compensating for the decreases of cellulose and hemicellulose contents.
The raw food waste of Korea contained markedly high sodium chloride and such high sodium chloride concentration in the soil is a factor limiting plant growth and impairing soil physicochemical properties. This study was carried out to assess the effect of NaCl-containing compost on the growth of lettuce(Lactuca satjva L.) and on the soil chemical properties. For the experiment, six treatments applying 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 6, and 9% NaCl-containing composts at the rate of $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$ were conducted established in a greenhouse. Growth measurements, chemical analysis of lettuce foliage, and soil chemical properties after the harvest were investigated. Lettuce yield in the treatments applied to composts over 3% NaCl was gradually reduced and mortality of lettuce as well as Na concent ration of lettuce foliage progressively increased with successively higher NaCl concentration of composts. With an increase of NaCl concentration of composts, the values of ESP and exchangeable sodium concentration in the surface soil were significantly increased. Especially, ESP of surface soil in the treatment incorporated with 9% NaCl-containing compost after the harvest attained by about 15, suggesting that sodification of surface soil under a greenhouse condition can occur when the compost over 9% NaCl is applied to soil. In conclusion, the application of over 3% NaCl-containing compost at the rates of $20Mg\;ha^{-1}$ can cause undesirable influences in plant growth and also the treatments of over 6% NaCl-containing composts can create conspicuous deteriorations in soil chemical properties in the current year.

This study was conducted to investigate effects of spent composts of Se-enriched mushrooms as the dietary Se source on muscular Se deposition and plasma glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) activity in the finishing Hanwoo steer. Twenty Hanwoo steers were used in the experiment and they were divided into four groups in a randomized complete block design with five replicates. Treatments were four levels (0.1, 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9ppm as fed basis) of dietary Se from the combination with spent composts of Se-enriched mushrooms and/or Se non-enriched mushrooms, in which each treatment was formulated with corn and corn gluten meal and so forth. Treatment diets were fed to Hanwoo steers for 90 days until the slaughter. Dry matter intakes had no significant differences among treatments and there were no significant differences for performances such as total BW gain and ADG among treatments. The Se concentration in blood was linearly increased with increasing dietary selenium levels and reached a plateau level after 8 weeks (p<0.001). Plasma GSH-Px activities had the similar trends to blood Se concentrations by showing that the increased dietary Se level significantly increased plasma GSH-Px activities of both total and Se-dependent (p<0.001). Muscle Se contents of Se-supplemented groups were linearly increased by 1.35 ~ 1.68 folds compared with the control group (0.1ppm; 0.273㎍/dry g) and especially those of the hind legs for 0.9ppm treatment showed the highest Se content as shown 0.457㎍ per dry gram (p<0.01) corresponding to approximately 70% increase of the control group. Se retention rate in the muscle of dietary Se originated from spent composts of Se-enriched mushrooms was estimated of maximum approximately 30% and dietary Se content showed the significant correlation with plasma GSH-Px activities and muscle Se contents (p<0.01). Accordingly, Se present in spent composts of Se-enriched mushroom as the dietary Se source not only had great bioavailabilities showing higher blood Se concentration and plasma GSH-Px activities, but also increased Se deposition in the muscle for Hanwoo beef cattle.
For reducing the residual effects of Quinclorac to followed-by crops of paddy rice, three tests by different soil improvers, different cultural performances with tillage and application of composts, and cultivation of different depletion crops were evaluated, respectively. Among seven soil improvers, activated carbon, composts and perlite showed significant promisable feasibility to reduce phytotoxicity of tomato seedlings as affected by Quinclorac residuals, And comparing to untreated check, the application of tillage and composts prior to transplanting of tomato seedling could helpful to reduce Quinclorac residuals in the soil, but tomato and lettuce, most susceptible crops to Quinclorac, were not remarkably protected by those cultural performances. Also among cultivation of depletion crops just after rice harvest, Italian ryegrass, tall fescue, rape and oats engaged to deplete and reduce Quinclorac residuals for tomato seedling growth, however alfalfa and hairy vetch, relatively susceptible plants to Quinclorac were not promisable.
This study was conducted to determine the total amount and type of seleniwn (Se) in the Se-enriched mushroom and its spent mushroom composts (SMC), and to investigate the metabolism in relation to Se accwnulation in the mushroom. Mushrooms, Flammulina velutipes, used in this study were grown for 60 days by adding 2 rng of inorganic Se (Na2Se03) per kg of mushroom composts (MC) on as-fed basis and were compared with normal mushrooms grown on the non Se-supplemented Me. Total Se contents for Se-treated mushrooms were significantly increased (P < 0.0001) by 20-fold (4.51 $\mu$/ g of dry) compared to Se-untreated (0.23 $\mu$/ g of dry). On the contrary, organic Se ratio was significantly lower (P < 0.0001) in the Se-treated mushroom (72.3 %) than the Se-untreated one (100 %, not analytically detected of inorganic Se). Se distribution upon a length in the Se-treated mushrooms was the highest in the bottom part (6.86 $\mu$/ g of dry) near to MC, and top and middle parts were significantly lower (3.71 and 3.01 $\mu$/ g of dry, respectively; P < 0.001) than the bottom. In the SMC from Se-treated mushrooms, the significant amount of Se (5.04l1g/g of dry) was remained, but that from the Se-untreated mushrooms was significantly low (P$\mu$ / g of dry. Se-treated SMC showed a high ratio of organic Se (65.67 %), suggesting that the significant amount of inorganic Se in the SMC was converted to organic Se by mushroom mycelia. Prior to mycelia inoculation in the mushroom culture, the sterilization of MC brought approximately 18% of Se loss in the MC. Apparent and net accumulation rates (%) for Se into mushrooms were 14.81 and 10.14 %, respectively, resulting from the Se volatilization into the air via metabolic process of mushroom itself. The result of this study shows that inorganic Se addition to MC for mushroom improved the organic Se contents in the mushroom and SMC. This study showed the possibility that Se in Se-enriched mushroom and SMC could be utilized as Se sources of food for human as well as feed for livestock.

This study were conducted to evaluate the N mineralization and nitrification rates and to estimate the losses of total carbon and nitrogen by runoff water in soils cooperated with organic composts and bio-char during corn cultivation. For the experiment, the soil texture used in this study was clay loam, and application rates of chemical fertilizer and bio-char were $230-107-190kg\;ha^{-1}$($N-P_2O_5-K_2O$) as recommended amount after soil test and 0.2% to soil weight. The soil samples were periodically taken at every 15 day intervals during the experimental periods. The treatments were consisted of cow compost, pig compost, swine digestate from aerobic digestion system, and their bio-char cooperation. For N mineralization and nitrification rates, it was shown that there were generally low in the soil cooperated with bio-char as compared to the only application plots of different organic composts except for 47 days after sowing. Also, they were observed to be highest in the application plot of swine digestate from aerobic digestion system. For loss of total carbon by run-off water, it was ranged from 1.5 to $3.0kg\;ha^{-1}$ in the different organic compost treatment plots. However, Loss of total carbon with bio-char could be reduced at $0.4kg\;ha^{-1}$ in PC treatment plot. Also, with application of bio-char, total nitrogen was estimated to be reduced at 4.2 (15.1%) and $3.8(11.8%)kg\;ha^{-1}$ in application plots of pig compost and swine aerobic digestate, respectively.
