Effect of Strip-cast Conditions on the Formation of Microstructures in Nd-Fe-B alloys (Strip-cast 조건이 Nd-Fe-B 합금의 미세조직 형성에 미치는 영향)

  • In order to improve the microstructure of the strip cast Nd-Fe-B alloys that are frequently used for production of high energy sintered magnets, influence of various strip casting conditions on the microstructure and phase formation and distribution were investigated. Nd-Fe-B strips consisting of microstructures suitable for preparation of high energy sintered magnets could be obtained when the wheel speed was below 5 m/s. The compositional limit that can avoid the crystallization of free iron in the as-cast state was estimated to be Nd$\_$14/Fe$\_$79/B$\_$7/. Regardless of the compositional variation, <001> preferred orientation of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B normal to the strip surface was always occurred below 5 m/s, which would eventually enhance the grain alignment during pressing the powder under a magnetic field. While the coercivity of the strip cast alloys increased with the increase of the wheel speed, mainly due to the refinement of Nd$_2$Fe$\_$14/B grains, it decreased with the reduction of Nd content in the alloy composition as the formation of free iron increased.

  • The volcanic rocks in Saryangdo area are composed of Witseom Andesite, Punghwari Tuff, Araetseom Andesite, Obido Formation, Namsan Rhyolite and Saryangdo Tuff in ascending order. The volcanic rocks has a range of andesite-rhyodacite-rhyolite, which indicates calc-alkaline series and volcanic arc of orogenic belt. In Harker diagrams for trace element and REE pattern, these are also distinguished into so three groups(Witseom Andesite, Araetseom Andesite and Saryangdo Tuff) that each unit is interpreted to have originated in different magma chamber. The Saryangdo Tuff exhibits systematically(chemical zonations that gradually change) from lower dacite to upper rhyolite in section. The systematic sequence of compositional variations suggests that the tuffs were formed by successive eruptions of upper to lower part of a zoned magma chamber in which relatively dacitic magma is surrounded around rhyolitic magma of the central part. The zoned magma chamber was formed from marginal accretion and crystal settling that resulted form magmatic differentiations by fractional crystallization.

  • Ferroelectric PZT (70/30) thick films were fabricated by the screen printing method. And the PZT (30/70) precusor solution were infiltrated by the spin-coating method on the PZT thick films to obtain a densification. All PZT thick films were sintered at $1050^{\circ}C$ for 10 min. Structural properties, such as crystalline structure, microstructures and compositional ratio, of PZT thick films were investigated with the variation of the number of sol coatings using XRD, SEM and EDS, respectively. All PZT thick films exhibited a perovskite polycrystalline structure without a pyrochloer phase. The thickness of PZT thick films, 4-times screen-printed, was approximately $60{\mu}m$. And the densification of the PZT thick films increased with increasing the number of sol coatings.

Geochemistry and Petrogenesis of Pliocene Alkaline Volcanic Rocks of Dok Island, Korea

  • Dok island comprises Pliocene volcanic products such as a series of volcanoclastic rocks and lavas ranging in composition from alkali basalts, and trachyandesites to trachytes. Compositional variation of the basaltic rocks can be attributed to fractional crystallization of olivine, clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite. Chemical variations among the trachyandesites are caused by fractionation of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and magnetite with minor amphibole, while trachytes are controlled mainly by feldspar fractionation. Incompatible element abundance ratios and chondrite normalized LREE/HREE ratios (e.g., (La/Yb)c: 24.8 to 32.8 for basalts, 15.6 to 31.2 for trachyandesites) suggest that the origins of the basalts and trachyandesites involve both different degrees of partial melting and subsequent fractional crystallization processes. Trace element ratios of the basalts from Dok island are characterized by high Ba/Nb, La/Nb, Ba/Th and Th/U and isotopic ratios (Tasumoto and Nakamura, 1991) that are similar to the EM 1 type of oceanic island basalts such as Gough and Tristan da Cunha basalts.

  • We report failure mode observed in polymer EL blue devices, relating with life curve. The modes are analyzed by observing compositional and morphological variation using TEM-EDX, STM, and reverse engineering method as destructive ways, and also investigated mobility changes of hole and electron by measuring transient EL as a nondestructive way corresponding to life curve. We believe that the postulated failure modes in polymer EL devices can present right directions to obtain better performance, especially life time, of polymer devices in material and device structural designing points of view.

  • Over the last decade, performances of low temperature fuel cells are substantially improved by developing highly active Pt-M alloy catalysts. The electrochemical stability of those catalysts, however, still does not meet the commercial grade for fuel cells to be long-term power sources of electrical vehicles. To unveil a major mechanism causing such weak durability, we extensively utilize ab-initio computations on nano-scale Pt-Co alloy catalysts and analyze thermodynamically the most stable structure as a function of compositional variation. Our results indicate that there is a certain feature governing the particle distribution of a specific alloy element on the nano-scale catalysts, which aggravates the electrochemical degradation.

  • Language learning involves linguistic environments around the learner. So the variation in training input to which the learner is exposed has been linked to their language learning. We explore how linguistic experiences can cause differences in learning linguistic structural features, as investigate in a probabilistic graphical model. We manipulate the amounts of training input, composed of natural linguistic data from animation videos for children, from holistic (one-word expression) to compositional (two- to six-word one) gradually. The recognition and generation of sentences are a "probabilistic" constraint satisfaction process which is based on massively parallel DNA chemistry. Random sentence generation tasks succeed when networks begin with limited sentential lengths and vocabulary sizes and gradually expand with larger ones, like children's cognitive development in learning. This model supports the suggestion that variations in early linguistic environments with developmental steps may be useful for facilitating language acquisition.

  • As one of the non-vacuum, low temperature fabrication route, electrochemical synthesis has been focused for pursuing the cost-effective pathway to produce high efficiency photovoltaic devices. Especially the availability to form the thin film structure on flexible substrate would be the great advantage of electrochemical process. The successful synthesis of the most favorable absorber materials such as CdTe and CIGS has been reported by many researchers, however, the efficiency of electrochemically synthesized could not exceed that from vacuum process, because of microstructural controllability and compositional variation on devices. In this study, we represent the effect of process parameters on the microstructure and composition of compound semiconductor during the synthesis, and propose the photovoltaic characteristics of electrochemically synthesized solar cells.

  • Natural gas is one of the most promising alternative fuels for automotive vehicles. However, natural gas varies in compositional between the originating fields and may be further modified due to processing and additional mixing. These variations are known to affect engine performance and emissions through changes in fuel metering and combustion characteristics. In the present study, the effect of gas compositions on vehicle performance such as fuel economy, driveability and exhaust emissions was examined. Analysis are made of using 3 types of NGVs which were made by automakers and 6 different fuels which are selected in consideration of the variation in fuel composition on the worldwide market. The results may be utilized to develop natural gas natural gas engine in automaekrs and/or to establish the fuel standard in the refueling stations.
