The Fe-Cr-Al alloy system shows an excellent heat resistance because of the formation of an $Al_2O_3$ film on the metal surface in an oxidizing atmosphere at high temperatures up to $1400^{\circ}C$. The Fecralloy needs an additive that can act as a binder because of its bad compactability. In this study, the green compacts of STS434L and Al powder added to Fecralloy are oxidized at $950^{\circ}C$ for up to 210 h. Fecralloy and Al is mixed by two types of ball milling. One is vented to air and the other was performed in a sealed jar. In the case of Al addition, there are no significant changes in the electrical resistance. Before the oxidation test, Al oxides are present in the Fecralloy surface, as determined from the energy dispersive spectroscopy results. The addition of Al improves the compactability because of an increased density, and the addition of STS434L increases the electrical resistivity by forming a composite oxide.

Kinik Company pioneered diamond pad conditioners protected by DLC barrier ($DiaShield^{(R)}$ Coating) back in 1999 (Sung & Lin, US Patent 6,368,198). Kink also evaluated Cermet Composite Coating (CCC or $C^3$, patent pending) with a composition that grades from a metallic (e.g. stainless steel) interlayer to a ceramic (e.g. $Al_2O_3$ or SiC) exterior. The metallic interlayer can form metallurgical bond with metallic matrix on the diamond pad conditioner. The ceramic exterior is both wear and corrosion resistant. The gradational design of $C^3$ coating will assure its strong adherence to the substrate because there is no weak boundary between coating and substrate.
Tungsten carbide has many industrial applications due to its high electrical and thermal conductivity, high melting temperature, high hardness and good chemical stability. Because tungsten carbide is difficult to sinter, it is sintered with nickel or cobalt as a binder and is currently used in nozzles, cutting tools, and molds. Alumina is reported to be a viable binder for tungsten carbide due to its higher oxidation resistance and lower cost than nickel and cobalt. The ultrafine tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites were rapidly sintered in a high frequency induction heating active sintering unit. The microstructure and mechanical properties (fracture toughness and hardness) of the composites were investigated and analyzed by Vickers hardness tester and electron microscope. Since the high-frequency induction heating sintering method enables high-speed sintering, ultrafine composites can be prepared by preventing grain growth. In the tungsten carbide-graphene-alumina composites, the grain size of tungsten carbide increased with the amount of alumina participation. The hardness and fracture toughness of the tungsten carbide-5% graphene- x% alumina (x = 0, 5, 10,15) composites were 5.1, 8.6, 8.6, and 8.4 MPa-m1/2 and 2384, 2168, 2165, and 2102 kg/mm2, respectively. The fracture toughness increased without a significant decrease in hardness. Sinterability was improved by adding alumina to tungsten carbide-graphene.
For the first time Aluminium-BariumeZinc oxide nanocomposite (ZABONC) was synthesized by solution combustion method where calcination was carried out at low temperatures (600℃) to study the electromagnetic (EM) (X/γ) radiation shielding properties. Further for characterization purpose standard techniques like PXRD, SEM, UV-VISIBLE, FTIR were used to find phase purity, functional groups, surface morphology, and to do structural analysis and energy band gap determination. The PXRD pattern shows (hkl) planes corresponding to spinel cubic phase of ZnAl2O4, cubic Ba(NO3)2, α and γ phase of Al2O3 which clearly confirms the formation of complex nano composite. From SEM histogram mean size of nano particles was calculated and is in the order of 17 nm. Wood and Tauc's relation direct energy band gap calculation gives energy gap of 2.9 eV. In addition, EM (X/γ) shielding properties were measured and compared with the theoretical ones using standard procedures (NaI (Tl) detector and multi channel analyzer MCA). For energy above 356 keV the measured shielding parameters agree well with the theory, while below this value slight deviation is observed, due to the influence of atomic/crystallite size of the ZABONC. Hence synthesized ZABONC can be used as a shielding material in EM (X/γ) radiation shielding.

Three-layer porous alumina-mullite composites with a symmetric gradient porosity are prepared using a controlled freeze/gel-casting method. In this work, tertiary-butyl alcohol (TBA) and coal fly ash with an appropriate addition of $Al_2O_3$ were used as the freezing vehicle and the starting material, respectively. When sintered at $1300-1500^{\circ}C$, unidirectional macro-pore channels aligned regularly along the growth direction of solid TBA were developed. Simultaneously, the pore channels were surrounded by less porous structured walls. A high degree of solid loading resulted in low porosity and a small pore size, leading to higher compressive strength. The sintered porous layered composite exhibited improved compressive strength with a slight decrease in its porosity. After sintering at $1500^{\circ}C$, the layered composite consisting of outer layers with a 50 wt% solid loading showed the highest compressive strength ($90.8{\pm}3.7MPa$) with porosity of approximately 26.4%.
The efficiency of fiber reinforced CMC(ceramic matrix composite) on the SiC materials have been investigated, in conjunction with the fabrication process by liquid phase sintering and the characterization. LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites was studied with the detailed analysis such as the microstructure, sintered density, flexural strength and fracture behavior. The applicability of carbon interfacial layer has been also investigated in the LPS process. Submicron SiC powder with the constant total amount and composition ratio of $Al_2O_3,\;Y_2O_3$ as sintering additives was used in order to promote the performance of the SiC matrix material. LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites were fabricated with hot press under the sintering temperature and applied pressure of $1820^{\circ}C$ and 20MPa for 1hr. The typical property of monolithic LPS-SiC materials was compared with LPS-$SiC_f$/SiC composites.

The composites were fabricated respectively 61vo1.% $\beta$ -SiC and 39vo1.% Ti $B_2$ spray-dried powders with the liquid forming additives of l2wt% $Al_2$$O_3$+ $Y_2$$O_3$ by pressureless annealing at 1$700^{\circ}C$, 175$0^{\circ}C$, 180$0^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. The result of phase analysis of composites by XRD revealed $\alpha$ -SiC(6H), Ti $B_2$, and YAG(A $l_{5}$$Y_3$$O_{12}$ ) crystal phase. The relative density, the Young's modulus and fracture toughness showed respectively the highest value of 92.97%, 92.88Gpa and 4.4Mpaㆍ $m^{\frac{1}{2}}$ for composites by pressureless annealing temperature 1$700^{\circ}C$ at room temperature. The electrical resistivity showed the lowest value of 8.09${\times}$10$^{-3}$ ㆍcm for composite by pressureless annealing temperature 1$700^{\circ}C$ at $25^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistivity of the SiC-Ti $B_2$ composites was all positive temperature cofficient resistance(PTCR) in the temperature ranges from $25^{\circ}C$ to $700^{\circ}C$.
This paper was to investigate of a adhesiveness for the plasma sprayed coating materials did salt spray by acoustic emission method in tensile loadings. The powders used for the coating were nickel aluminum composite powder Ni-4.5wt.%Al and titanium dioxide powder $TiO_2$. These powders were coated on a carbon steel S45C by plasma spray method. The result solution was a 5% NaCl and the slat spray times were 2, 5 and 10 hours respectively. The salt solution penetrated into the surface of the substrate through pore of the coating layer built in the process of plasma spay. Corrosion productions formed on the surface of substrate. The adhesiveness between the substrate and the coating layer is weaken by corrosion and the exfoliation initiated chiefly at the corrosion surface of the substrate. The AE events and energy of the corroded coating specimens decreased as the salt spray times increased.
Transparent ceramics are used in new technology because of their excellent mechanical properties over glasses. Transparent ceramics are nowadays widely used in armor, laser windows, and in high temperature applications. Silicon nitride ceramics have excellent mechanical properties and if transparent silicon nitride is fabricated, it can be widely used. h-BN has a lubricating property and is ductile. Therefore, adding h-BN to silicon nitride ceramics gives a lubricating property and is also machinable. Translucent silicon nitride was fabricated by hot-press sintering (HPS) and 57% transmittance was observed in the near infrared region. A higher wt. % of h-BN in silicon nitride ceramics does not favor transparency. The optical, mechanical, and tribological properties of BN dispersed polycrystalline $Si_3N_4$ ceramics were affected by the density, ${\alpha}:{\beta}$-phase ratio, and content of h-BN in sintered ceramics. The hot pressed samples were prepared from the mixture of $\alpha-Si_3N_4$, AlN, MgO, and h-BN at $1850^{\circ}C$. The composite contained from 0.25 to 2 wt. % BN powder with sintering aids (9% AlN + 3% MgO). A maximum transmittance of 57% was achieved for the 0.25 wt. % BN doped $Si_3N_4$ ceramics. Fracture toughness increased and wear volume and the friction coefficient decreased with an increase in BN content. The properties such as transmittance, density, hardness, and flexural strength decreased with an increase in content of h-BN in silicon nitride ceramics.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of bleaching technique on the shear bond strength of esthetic restorative materials to bovine enamel. The bleaching agent was used 35% $H_2O_2$(Hi-Lite, Shofu, U.S.A.). Experimental groups were divided into two divisions as group A and B. Experimental A groups for the effect of number of bleaching were as follows ; Group Al : no bleaching Group A2 : bleaching 1 time ( for 5 minutes ) Group A3 : bleaching 3 times ( each for 5 minutes ) Group A4 : bleaching 6 times ( each for 5 minutes ) Group A5 : bleaching 9 times ( each for 5 minutes ) Experimental B groups for the effect of storage period in artificial saliva were as follows ; Group B1 : not stored in artificial saliva after bleaching Group B2 : stored in artificial saliva for 1 day after bleaching Group B3 : stored in artificial saliva for 1 week after bleaching Group B4 : stored in artificial saliva for 2 weeks after bleaching Group B5 : stored in artificial saliva for 4 weeks after bleaching Composite resin and glass ionomer cement were bonded to all specimens, and the shear bond strength between enamel and r~storative material were measured in Instron Universal Testing Machine(Instron, 4467, U.S.A,), Additionally, the bleached enamel specimens were examed after etching with 37.4% $H_3PO_4$ for 1 min under SEM(S-2300, Hitachi Co., Japan) to observe the effect of bleaching procedure on enamel surface morphology. The result were as follows ; 1. In SEM findings, bleached bovine enamel was found to be superficially rough. 2. In bleached bovine enamel, the effect of acid etching was reduced with the increase of number of bleaching. 3. The mean shear bond strength of composite resin and glass ionomer cement to bleached enamel surface tended to be lower than those to non-bleached enamel surface. 4. With the increase of number of bleaching, the shear bond strength of composite resin and glass ionomer cement to bleached enamel were progressively decreased. 5. Increasing the, storage period in artificial saliva after bleaching, the shear bond strength of composite resin and glass ionomer cement to bleached enamel were progressively increased. 6. The mean shear bond strength of glass ionomer cement to bleached bovine enamel tended to be clearly lower than that of composite resin.
