  • Recently, many researches are carried for high-speed and light craft. In this study, the optimum structural design procedure and the computer program are developed to minimize the hull weight of SES(Surface Effect Ship) built of composite materials. Three types of composite materials-Sandwich, Single Skin and Hybrid type- are considered and the efficiency of each type is investigated. In design process, the optimum design of main members is performed at first considering longitudinal strength. And then, the transverse member design is performed considering torsional strength SSDP(Structural Synthesis Design program) of U.S. Navy is adopted for design algorithm and DnV classification nile for design loads and strength criteria. For optimum structural design, ES 1+1 optimization technique is used.

  • In this study, the 750kW medium scale composite blade for the horizontal axis wind turbine system was designed and manufactured, and it was tested and evaluated by the specific structural test rig. In the test, it was found that local bucklings at the trailing edge of the blade and excessive deflections at the blade tip were happened. In order to solve these problems, the design of blade structure was modified. After improving the design, the abrupt change of deflection at the blade tip was reduced by smooth variation of the spar thickness and the local buckling was removed by extending the web length. The modified design was analyzed by the FEM, the safety and stability of the blade structure. And Fatigue life over 20 years was confirmed by using S-N linear damage method, Spera's method, etc.

  • This study proposes a development for the l-kW class small wind turbine system, which is applicable to relatively low wind speed region like Korea and has the variable pitch control mechanism. In the aerodynamic design of the wind turbine blade, parametric studies were carried out to determine an optimum aerodynamic configuration which is not only more efficient at low wind speed but whose diameter is not much larger than similar class other blades. A light composite structure, which can endure effectively various loads, was newly designed. In order to evaluate the structural design of the composite blade, the structural analysis was performed by the finite element method. Moreover both structural safety and aerodynamic performance were verified through the prototype test.

  • A brake pedal for the flight control system of the Korean primary trainer is developed using composite material. The development includes the structural design, stress analysis, manufacturing and the qualification tests. A FEM analysis is used for the structural design and stress analysis. Autoclaving process is used to fabricate the composite brake pedal. For the qualification tests, modular fixtures are developed and applied. It is shown that the composite brake pedal developed meets all the structural integrity requirements specified in the military specification for aircraft parts.

  • This paper presents a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm for combinatorial optimisation and applied for design optimisation of fiber reinforced composite structures. The proposed algorithm closely follows the implementation of Pareto Archive Evolutionary strategy (PAES) proposed in the literature. The modifications suggested include a customized neighbourhood search algorithm in place of mutation operator to improve intensification mechanism and a cross over operator to improve diversification mechanism. Further, an external archive is maintained to collect the historical Pareto optimal solutions. The design constraints are handled in this paper by treating them as additional objectives. Numerical studies have been carried out by solving a hybrid fiber reinforced laminate composite cylindrical shell, stiffened composite cylindrical shell and pressure vessel with varied number of design objectives. The studies presented in this paper clearly indicate that well spread Pareto optimal solutions can be obtained employing the proposed algorithm.

  • This work is to propose a structural design and analysis procedure for development of the low noise 1kW class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. The proposed structural configuration has a sandwich composite structure with the E-glass/Epoxy face sheets and the Urethane foam core for lightness, structural stability, low manufacturing cost and easy manufacturing process. Structural analysis including load cases, stress, deformation, buckling, vibration and fatigue life was performed using the Finite Element Method, the load spectrum analysis and Miner rule. In order to evaluate the designed structure, the structural test was carried out and its test results were compared with the estimated results. Moreover Investigation on structural safety of tower was verified through structural analysis by FEM.

  • Steel, concrete and their combination materials are the most 6commonly used materials for civil engineering structural systems such as buildings, bridge structures and other structures. Recently, however, fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, a relatively new composite material made of fibers and polymer resins, have been gradually used in structural systems as an alternative structural material. This paper describes a comparison of design strength equations for steel column and FRP composite column based on design philosophies. The safety factors used in allowable stress design (ASD) are relatively higher in FRP structural design than steel structural design. Column critical stress equations of FRP composites column from an experimental study can be represented by Euler elastic buckling equation at the long-range of slenderness, and an exponential form at the short-range of slenderness as defined in Load and Resistance Factor Design (LRFD) of steel column. The column strength of steel and FRP composite columns in large slenderness is independent of material strength, this result verified the elastic buckling equation as derived by Eq. (15) and Eq. (5).

  • The structural stiffness, strength and stability on the bodyshell and floor structures of the Korean Low Floor Bus composed of laminate, sandwich panels and metal reinforced frame were evaluated. The laminate composite panel and facesheet of sandwich panel were made of WR580/NF4000 glass fabric/epoxy laminate, while aluminum honeycomb or balsa was applied to the core materials of the sandwich panel. A finite element analysis was used to verify the basic design requirements of the bodyshell and the floor structure. The use of aluminum reinforced frame and honeycomb core was beneficial for weight saving and structural performance. The symmetry of the outer and inner facesheet thickness of sandwich panels did not affect the structural integrity. The structural strength of the panels was evaluated using Von-Mises criterion for metal structures and total laminate approach criterion for composite structures. All stress component of the bodyshell and floor structures were safely located below the failure stresses. The total laminate approach is recommended to predict the failure of hybrid sandwich composite structures at the stage of the basic design.

  • This study was performed on preliminary structural design of a small scale WIG craft which has been developed as a next generation high speed maritime transportation system in Korea. A composite structure design using the foam-sandwich for main wing and tail fins and the honeycomb sandwich and skin-stringer-ring frame for fuselage was applied for weight reduction as well as structural stability. A commercial FEM code, NASTRAN for was utilized to confirm the structural safety for the reiterate design modifications to meet design requirements including the target weight. Each main wing was jointed with the fuselage by eight high strength insert bolts for easy assembling and disassembling as well as for assuring the required 20 years service life. For control surface structural design, the channel type spar, the foam sandwich skin and the lug joint were adopted.
