The purpose of this study was to measure the polymerization contraction stress of two types of composite resins; chemical cured type(Cliarfil F II, Kuraray, Japan) and photo-cured type(Photo-Clearfil Bright, Kuraray, Japan). The stresses of composite resin by contraction measured with specially designed measuring device(Fig. 1). The stresses caused by shrinkage during hardening of specimens were measured according to the type of composite resins, thickness of specimen(0.65, 1.30 and 1.95mm), and ratio of catalyst to base in case of only chemical cured composite resin(0.5, 1.0 and 1.5). As the composite resin specimen shrank on hardening, the load cell recorded force vs time automatically on pen-recorder(Toa, Japan) with a cross-head speed 60mm/hr at 0~10 voltages up to 2 hours. The experiments were conducted in a room maintained at $23{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ and relative humidity $50{\pm}10%$. The results were as follows. 1. The contraction stress during hardening was higher in photo cured composite resin than in chemical cured composite resin. 2. The contraction stress during hardening was increased with thickness of composite resin specimen. 3. In chemical cured composite resin, the polymerization contraction stress was decreased with ratio of catalyst and base. 4. The contraction stress during polymerization was higher in early time after insertion of photo cured composite resin and chemical cured composite resin.
This paper presents the strength safety of a hydrogen gas composite fuel tank, which is analyzed using a FEM based on the criterion of US DOT-CFFC and Korean Standard. A hydrogen gas composite tank in which is fabricated by an aluminum liner of 6061-T6 material and carbon fiber wound composite layers of T800-24K is charged with a filling pressure of 70MPa and a gas storage capacity of 130 liter. The FEM results indicated that von Mises stress, 255.2MPa of an aluminum liner inner tank is low compared with that of 95% yield strength, 272MPa. And a carbon fiber stress ratio of a composite fuel tank is 3.11 in hoop direction and 3.04 in helical direction. These data indicate that a carbon fiber gas tank is safe in comparison to that of a recommended criterion of 2.4 stress ratio. Thus, the proposed composite tank with 130 liter capacity and 70MPa filling pressure is usable in strength safety.

A styrene solution of waste expanded polystyrene with a crosslinking agent and an initiator was used as a binder for waste wood-plastic composite panels. The waste wood-plastic composite panels are prepared with various binder contents and filler-binder ratios by using a hot press molding method. The apparent density of the composite panels is increased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio, while their water absorption and expansion in thickness are decreased with increasing binder content and filler-binder ratio. The maximum flexural strength and wet flexural strength of the composite panels are obtained at a binder content of 35% and a filler-binder ratio of 0.8. Decreases in the flexural strengths of the composite panels due to water immersion at 20 and $100^{\circ}C$ are hardly recognized at binder contents of 30% or more.
Sand compaction pile (SCP)-improved ground is composite soil which consists of the SCP and the surrounding soft soil. When a surcharge load is applied to composite ground, time-dependent behaviors occur in the composite soil due to consolidation according to radial flow toward the SCP. In addition, stress transfer also takes place between the SCP and the soft soil. This paper presents the numerical results of cylindrical composite ground that was conducted to investigate smear effect on consolidation behaviors of SCP-improved ground. The results showed that the smeared zone of soft clay had a significant effect on effective stress-pore water pressure response, stress transfer mechanism and stress concentration ratio of composite ground. Amount of stress transfer between the clay and the SCP was maximum in depth of z/H=0.25, and decreased with depth. Stress concentration ratio of composite ground was not constant, but depended on consolidation process. It was also found that the value of stress concentration ratio in soft clay with smeared zone was larger than that in soft clay without smeared zone.

Fabrication process of metal/intermetallic laminated composites by using self-propagating high temperature synthesis(SHS) reactions between Ni and Al elemental metal foils have been investigated. Al foils were sandwiched between Ni foils and heated in a vacuum hot press to the melting point of aluminium. SHS reaction kinetics was thermodynamically analyzed through the final volume fraction of the unreacted Al related with the initial thickness ratio of Ni:Al and diffusion bonding stage before SHS reaction. Thermal aging of laminated composites resulted in the formation of functionally gradient series of intermetallic phases. Microstructure showed that the main phases of intermetallics were NiAl and $Ni_3Al$ having higher strength at room and high temperatures. The volume fractions of intermetallic phases were measured as 82.4, 58.6, 38.4% in 1:1, 2:1, 4:1 initial thickness ratio of Ni:Al.

Thermo-mechanical behavior of discontinuous shape memory alloy(SMA) reinforced polymeric composite has been studied using modified shear lag theory and finite element(FE) analysis with 2-D multi-fiber model. The aligned and staggered models of short-fiber arrangement are employed. The effects of fiber overlap and aspect ratio on the thermomechanical responses such as the thermal expansion coefficient are investigated. It is found that the increase of both tensile stress(resistance stress) in SMA fiber and compressive stress in polymer matrix with increasing aspect ratio is the main cause of low thermal deformation of the composite.

The fiber oriented condition inside fiber reinforced composite material is a basic factor of mechanical properties of composite materials. It is very important to meausure the fiber orientation angle for the determination of molding conditions, mechanical characteristics, and the design of composite materials. In the work, the fiber orientation distribution of simulation figure plotted by PC is measured using image processing in order to examine the accuracy of intersection counting method. The fiber orientation function measured by intersection counting method using image processing is compared with the calculated fiber orientation function. The results show that the measured value of fiber orientation function using intersection counting method is lower than the calculated value, because the number of intersection between the scanning line and the fiber with smaller fiber aspect ratio is counted less than with larger fiber aspect ratio.

The purpose of this was to examine the used of fly ash as a type of construction material. In this paper the results from a recent study on development of a cement composite utilizing relatively large amount of fly ash are presented. The flowable fly ash-cement sand composite was investigated for strength and flowability characteristics. The independent variable considered were: fly-ash content, sand content, and ratio of water to cementitious materials. Results of this study show that high volume fly-ash composite can be proportioned to obtain 10~15kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ compressive strength at 28 days. For applications requiring strength between 10kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 15kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, the mixture with fly ash-cement ratio of 5.6 and sand-cement ratio of 28 with relatively high water content may be used. Slump was held at 25$\pm$1cm for all mixtures produced compressive strength at 28 days were found to range from 5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ to 13.7kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$.

The analytical solutions for the free vibration of cross-ply laminated composite cyllindrical shell with axial stiffeners(stringers) are presented usint the energy method. The stiffeners are taken to be smeared over the surface of shell with the smeared stffener theory. The effect of the parameters such as the stacking sequences, the shell thichness, the shell radius-to stringer depth ratio, the stringer depth-to width ratio, the shell length-to radius ratio are studied. By comparison with the previously published experimental results and the analytical results for the stiffened isotropic cylindrical shell and the unstiffened orthotropic composite laminated cylindrical shell, it is shown that natural frequencies can be determined with adequate accuracy.

Crushed Stone Pile(CSP) is one of the ground improvement methods available to loose sand and clayey ground by forming compacted CSP in the weak soil layer. The effects of this method are enhancement of ground bearing capacity, reduction of settlement and prevention of lateral ground movement in cohesive layer, reduction of liquefaction potential in sandy ground. This study performs model tests in 1.0m${\times}$1.0m${\times}$1.0m and 1.5m${\times}$1.5m${\times}$l.2m model tank to observe bearing capacity of CSP treated ground. The area replacement ratio of CSP composite ground varies 20%, 30% and 40% with square grid pattern. After the composite ground was consolidated under pressure of 0.5kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$ and 1.0kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, load tests were carried out. The results show that ultimate bearing capacity increases with area replacement ratio and the preconsolidation pressure of ground.
