Most of studies on the open section composite beams are confined to the thin composite beams. There are some works focused on the thick composite beams but they are limited only to closed section beams. Therefore, it is required to develop an appropriate model to analyze the thick open section composite beams. In this study, the cantilever beams of two specific lay-up configurations are considered which are the circumferentially asymmetric stiffness (CAS) and circumferentially uniform stiffness (CUS) beams. Under the torsional loading, loading induced deformations are obtained for the thick beams using the suggested model. The model includes coupled stiffness and secondary warping effects. The results are compared with those obtained using thin beam model to observe the thickness effects. Those results are also compared with the finite element analysis results.
A partially coupled thermo-piezoelectric-mechanical triangular finite element model of composite laminates with surface bonded piezoelectric actuators, subjected to externally applied mechanical load, temperature change load, electric field load is developed. The governing differential equations are obtained by applying the principle of free energy and variational techniques. A higher order zigzag theory displacement field is employed to accurately capture the transverse shear and normal effects in laminated composite plates of arbitrary thickness. Nonconforming shape functions by Specht are employed in the transverse displacement variables. Numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and efficiency of the proposed triangular plate element.
In the areas highly exposed to earthquakes, concrete-filled steel tube columns (CFSTCs) are known to provide superior structural aspects such as (i) high strength for good seismic performance (ii) high ductility (iii) enhanced energy absorption (iv) confining pressure to concrete, (v) high section modulus, etc. Numerous studies were reported on behavior of CFSTCs under axial compression loadings. This paper presents an analytical model to predict ultimate load capacity of CFSTCs with circular sections under axial load by using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). MARS is a nonlinear and non-parametric regression methodology. After careful study of literature, 150 comprehensive experimental data presented in the previous studies were examined to prepare a data set and the dependent variables such as geometrical and mechanical properties of circular CFST system have been identified. Basically, MARS model establishes a relation between predictors and dependent variables. Separate regression lines can be formed through the concept of divide and conquers strategy. About 70% of the consolidated data has been used for development of model and the rest of the data has been used for validation of the model. Proper care has been taken such that the input data consists of all ranges of variables. From the studies, it is noted that the predicted ultimate axial load capacity of CFSTCs is found to match with the corresponding experimental observations of literature.
A bridge widening technology using steel-concrete composite system was developed and is presented in this paper. The widened superstructure system consists of a newly built composite steel-concrete girder with concrete deck and steel diaphragms attached to the existing concrete girders. This method has been applied in several bridge widening projects in China, and one of those projects is presented in detail. Due to the higher stiffness-to-weight ratio and the rapid erection of composite girders, this widening method reveals benefits in both mechanical performance and construction. As only a few methods for the design of bridges with different types of girders are recommended in current design codes, a more accurate analytical method of estimating live load distribution on girder bridges was developed. In the analytical model, the effects of span length, girder pacing, diaphragms, concrete decks were considered, as well as the torsional and flexural stiffness of both composite box girders and concrete T girders. The study shows that the AASHTO LRFD specification procedures and the analytical models proposed in this paper closely approximate the live load distribution factors determined by finite element analysis. A parametric study was also conducted using the finite element method to evaluate the potential load carrying capacities of the existing concrete girders after widening.
This paper presents experimental and numerical studies into the structural behavior of a high performance corbel type composite connection adopted in Raffles City of Hangzhou, China. Physical tests under both monotonic and quasi-static cyclic loads were conducted to investigate the load carrying capacities and deformation characteristics of this new type of composite connection. A variety of structural responses are examined in detail, including load-deformation characteristics, the development of sectional direct and shear strains, and the history of cumulative plastic deformation and energy. A three-dimensional finite element model built up with solid elements was also proposed for the verification against test results. The studies demonstrate the high rigidity, strength and rotation capacities of the corbel type composite connections, and give detailed structural understanding for engineering design and practice. Structural engineers are encouraged to adopt the proposed corbel type composite connections in mega high-rise buildings to achieve an economical and buildable and architectural friendly engineering solution.
To improve the durability and service life of reinforced concrete column such as bridge piers, an advanced composite column made of Ultra High Performance Cementitious Composites (UHPCC) permanent form is proposed. Based on elasticity plasticity theory, axial compression behavior of the composite column was studied theoretically. The first circumferential cracking load and ultimate limit loading capacity are derived for the composite column. Short composite column compression tests and numerical simulations using FEM method were carried out to justify the theoretical formula. The effects of UHPCC tube thickness on the axial compression behavior were studied. Using the established theoretical model and numerical simulation, the large dimension composite columns are calculated and analyzed with different UHPCC tube thickness. These studies may provide a reference for advanced composite column design and application.
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the degradation law of stiffness of steel-concrete composite beams after certain fatigue loads. First, six test beams with stud connectors were designed and fabricated for static and fatigue tests. The resultant failure modes under different fatigue loading cycles were compared. And an analysis was performed for the variations in the load-deflection curves, residual deflections and relative slips of the composite beams during fatigue loading. Then, the correlations among the stiffness degradation of each test beam, the residual deflection and relative slip growth during the fatigue test were investigated, in order to clarify the primary reasons for the stiffness degradation of the composite beams. Finally, based on the stiffness degradation function under fatigue loading, a calculation model for the residual stiffness of composite beams in response to fatigue loading cycles was established by parameter fitting. The results show that the stiffness of composite beams undergoes irreversible degradation under fatigue loading. And stiffness degradation is associated with the macrobehavior of material fatigue damage and shear connection degradation. In addition, the stiffness degradation of the composite beams exhibit S-shaped monotonic decreasing trends with fatigue cycles. The general agreement between the calculation model and experiment shows good applicability of the proposed model for specific beam size and fatigue load parameters. Moreover, the research results provide a method for establishing a stiffness degradation model for composite beams after fatigue loading.
Dynamic analysis of laminated beams with a embedded damping layer under tension or compression axial load is investigated. Improved Layer-Wise Zig-Zag Beam Theory and Interdependent Kinematic Relation using the governing equations of motion are incorporated to model the laminated beams with a damping layer and a corresponding beam zig-zag finite element is developed. Flexural frequencies and modal loss actors under tension or compression axial load are calculated based on Complex Eigenvalue Method. The effect of the axial tension and compression load on the frequencies and loss factors is discussed.
This paper is proposed that The voltage-dependant power factor model is established as 5th polynomials with convenience data type. This modeling includes the harmonic components by static experiments of individual and composite load. This paper suggested methodology for modeling bus and regional power factor with consideration of harmonics effect by load composition rates and individual load power factor models.
In this study a simple model is developed that predicts impact damage in a composite laminate avoiding the need of the time-consuming dynamic finite element method (FEM). The analytical model uses a non-linear approximation method (Rayleigh-Ritz) and the large deflection plate theory to predict the number of failed plies and damage area in a quasi-isotropic composite circular plate (axisymmetric problem) due to a point impact load at its centre. It is assumed that the deformation due to a static transverse load is similar to that oc curred in a low velocity impact. It is found that the model, despite its simplicity, is in good agreement with FEM predictions and experimental data for the deflection of the composite plate and gives a good estimate of the number of failed plies due to fibre breakage. The predicted damage zone could be used with a fracture mechanics model developed by the second investigator and co-workers to calculate the compression after impact strength of such laminates. This approach could save significant running time when compared to FEM solutions.
