Traffic flow capacity of some old road bridges is insufficient due to limited deck width. In such cases bridge deck widening is a common solution. For multi-girder reinforced concrete (RC) bridges it is possible to add steel-concrete composite girders as the new outermost girders. The deck widening may be combined with bridge strengthening thanks to thickening of the existing deck slab. Joint action of the existing and the added parts of such bridge span must be ensured. It refers especially to the horizontal plane at the interface of the existing slab and the added concrete layer as well as to the vertical planes at the external surfaces of the initially outermost girders where the added girders are connected to the existing bridge span. Since the distribution of the added concrete is non-uniform in the span cross-section the structure is particularly sensitive to the added concrete shrinkage. The shrinkage induces shear forces in the aforementioned planes. Widening of a 12 m long RC multi-girder bridge span is numerically analysed to assess the influence of the added concrete shrinkage. The analysis results show that: a) in the vertical plane of the connection of the added and the existing deck slab the longitudinal shear due to the shrinkage of the added concrete is comparable with the effect of live load, b) it is necessary to provide appropriate longitudinal reinforcement in the deck slab over the added girders due to tension induced by the shrinkage of the added concrete.
An experimental study has been carried out to reveal the shear-bond failure mechanism of composite deck slabs. Thirteen full scale simply supported composite slabs are studied experimentally, with the influence parameters like span length, slab depth, shear span length and end anchorage provided by steel headed studs. A dozen of strain gauges and LVDTs are monitored to capture the strain distribution and variation of the composite slabs. Before the onset of shear-bond slip, the longitudinal shear forces along the span are deduced and found to be proportional to the vertical shear force in terms of the shear-bond strength in the m-k method. The test results are appraised using the current design procedures. Based on the partial shear-bond connection at the ultimate state, an improved method is proposed by introducing two reduction factors to assess the moment resistance of a composite deck slab. The new method has been validated and the results predicted by the revised method agree well with the test results.

FRP-concrete composite deck, an innovative system, is composed of concrete in the top and FRP panel in the bottom. Bottom FRP panel can reduce self weight and improve workability. This system requires strong connection between FRP and concrete. Therefore coarse sand coating was previously applied on FRP to improve the bonding. In this study, concrete wedge method is newly introduced to enhance both vertical bond and fatigue performance. Three FRP-concrete composite deck specimens with the concrete wedges were manufactured, and static and fatigue tests were carried out. The results showed that the new FRP-concrete composite deck satisfied deflection and crack width limits set by the design codes. And the fatigue test showed that the composite deck was capable of two million load cycles under 50% of its static strength. Based on the results, it can be concluded that that this new system has outstanding mechanical and durability performance, and therefore, satisfactorily be used in designing FRP-concrete composite deck.

The design of noncomposite construction for skew bridges with large skew angels has been often checked because composite construction may cause large stresses in the bridge deck. In this study, the analytical model considered dynamic behaviors for noncomposite skew bridges was proposed. Using the proposed analytical model, the effects of interactions between the concrete deck and steel girders such as composite construction, and noncomposite construction on the dynamic characteristics of simply supported skew bridges were investigated. A series of parametric studies for the total 27 skew bridges was conducted with respect to parameters such as girder spacing, skew angle, and deck aspect ratio. The slip at the interfaces between the concrete deck and steel girders may bring about longer vibration periods that result in the reduced total seismic base shear.

In this paper, we present the results of an experimental research on the load-deflection characteristics of full-scale concrete bridge decks reinforced with GFRP re-bars. Similar researches have been conducted in many countries to extend the service life of concrete bridge decks, which are under harsh environmental condition. Concrete bridge decks are one of the major concerns for the maintenance of bridges. GFRP re-bar available in the domestic construction market was investigated and the concrete deck reinforced with GFRP re-bars was tested under flexure to investigate the applicability of GFRP re-bar on the bridge deck construction.
Design details pertaining to the connection between some recently developed fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composite deck systems and the supporting girders require openings through cells of the deck. This significantly changes the stress distribution in these components. As a result, the conventional assumptions that deck designs are controlled by their stiffness, and not strength, needs a closer examination. This paper proposes an analytical method to investigate the stress states and failure mechanisms using a type of "global-local" modeling perspective, incorporating classical lamination theory and first ply failure criterion with use of appropriate stress concentration factors around the cutouts. The use of a "smeared-stress" approach is presented as a potential means of simplifying certain FRP specific complexities, while still enabling prediction of overall failure.
Typical composite girder has been composed with conventional concrete deck and steel girder. Recently, ultrahigh-performance-concrete (UHPC) deck is proposed in order to enhance durability and reduce weight of deck as well as to increase stiffness and strength of the composite girder. This study investigates that a headed stud is still compatible as a shear connector for the UHPC deck and steel girder composite beam. Twelve push-out specimens are prepared to evaluate the static strength of stud shear connectors embedded in the UHPC deck. The test program proves that the static strength of the stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC well meets with design codes described in AASHTO LRFD. Chosen experimental variables are aspect ratio of height to diameter of stud, thickness of deck and thickness of concrete cover over the head of stud. From the test program, aspect ratio and cover thickness are investigated to mitigate the regulations of the existing design codes. The minimum aspect ratio and the minimum cover thickness given in AASHTO LRFD are four and 50mm, respectively. This limitation hinders to lower the thickness of the UHPC deck. The results of the experiment program give that the aspect ratio and the cover thickness can be lower down to three and 25mm, respectively. Eurocode-4 regulates characteristic relative slip at least 6mm. However, test results show that stud shear connectors embedded in UHPC provide the characteristic relative slip only about 4mm. Therefore, another measures to increase ductility of stud should be prepared.

The two-girder composite bridge has the girder space of more than 5m, for special case, over than 15m. Therefor, the design and construction of this bridge system require new approaches. To ensure the structural safety, the deck depth should be increased. Therefore, the economically designed deck system is necessary for th two-girder bridge. This study is the first step to develop the deck system for two-girder bridges. In this study, a literatute survey is performed to develop a new deck system for two-girder type of bridges. By considering the characteristics of two-girder bridge system, a cast-in-place PSC deck is proposed for the two-girder bridges. To examine structural behavior and safety of the proposed PSC deck, three real scale partition deck(3m$\times$5m) are tested under the static loading. In the test, the failure mode and behavior of each specimen, and ultimate load carrying capacity of the two-girder-bridge deck are identified.
A composite bridge deck system assembled from a modular profile with double-rectangular cell has been developed for highway bridges. This study is focused on the experimental characterization of flexure performance of pultruded GFRP deck under static loading. Several tests were conducted on single modules and adhesively bonded 2 and 5-modules. The specimen details such as dimensions, material properties and fiber architecture, and experimental set-up and testing procedure have been addressed. It is found that the presented GFRP composite modular deck is very efficient for use in bridges.

The risk of transverse cracking in concrete decks of composite bridges is affected by many factors related to the bridge design, materials, and construction. Among others, the thermal and shrinkage stresses are the most important factors that affect the transverse cracking in early-age concrete decks. The thermal stress at the concrete deck is mainly affected by both ambient temperature and solar radiation. The shrinkage stress at the general strength concrete deck is mainly affected by drying shrinkage and the high strength concrete deck is mainly affected by autogeneous shrinkage. Three-dimensional finite element models of composite bridges were made to investigate the stress due to thermal and shrinkage stress.
