Pile-to-pilecap connection performance is important as Integral abutment bridges (IABs) have no expansion joints and their flexible weak-axis oriented supporting piles take the role of the expansion joint. This connection may govern the bridge strength and the performance against various lateral loads. The intention of this study is to identify crack propagation patterns when the pile-to-pilecap connection is subjected to lateral loadings and to propose novel connections for improved performance under lateral loadings. In this study, eight different types of connections were developed and modeled, using Abaqus 6.12 to evaluate performances. Three types were developed by strengthening the connections using rebar or steel tube: (i) PennDOT specification; (ii) Spiral rebar; and (iii) HSS tube. Other types were developed by softening the connections using shape modifications: (i) cylindrical hole; (ii) reduced flange; (iii) removed flange; (iv) extended hole; and (v) slot hole connection types. The connections using the PennDOT specification, HSS tube, and cylindrical hole were shown to be ineffective in the prevention of cracks, resulting in lower structural capacities under the lateral load compared to other types. The other developed connections successfully delayed or arrested the concrete crack initiations and propagations. Among the successful connection types, the spiral rebar connection allowed a relatively larger reaction force, which can damage the superstructure of the IABs. Other softened connections performed better in terms of minimized reaction forces and crack prevention.
To study the rail mapped deformation caused by the pier settlement of simply - supported bridges with China Railway Track System III (CRTS III) slab ballastless track (SBT) system under the mode of non-longitudinal connection ballastless track slab, this study derived an analytical solution to the mapped relationships between pier settlement and rail deformation based on the interlayer interaction mechanism of rail-pier and principle of stationary potential energy. The analytical calculation results were compared with the numerical results obtained by ANSYS finite element calculation, thus verifying the accuracy of analytical method. A parameter analysis was conducted on the key factors in rail mapped deformation such as pier settlement, fastener stiffness, and self-compacting concrete (SCC) stiffness of filling layer. The results indicate that rail deformation is approximately proportional to pier settlement. The smaller the fastener stiffness, the smoother the rail deformation curve and the longer the rail deformation area is. With the increase in the stiffness of SCC filling layer, the maximum positive deformation of rail gradually decreases, and the maximum negative deformation gradually increases. The deformation of rail caused by the pier settlement of common-span bridge structures will generate low-frequency excitation on high-speed trains.
Many composite girder bridges have been constructed for about thirty five years. Nowadays they are aged or deteriorated because of the increase in traffic and vehicle loads. In this study, the effect of strengthening with glass fiber sheet is investigated to estimate the possibility for applying to damaged prestressed concrete bridges. One normal and eight cracked specimens which had been preloaded were tested. The cracked specimens were strengthened with either external prestressing or bonding glass fiber sheet, or using both methods. The results showed that the maximum loads are almost same for both methods. So it seems that the strengthening with glass fiber sheet can be used for strengthening damaged prestressed concrete girders. It is important that proper devices should be selected to prevent glass fiber sheet from premature bonding failure below its maximum load, which is similar to end anchorage problem in external prestressing method. It is proved that the devices proposed in this paper have sufficient anchoring capability to increase load carrying capacity.
The evaluation of shear stiffness of shear connection in composite bridges with CIP concrete deck is analysed. Shear stiffness of shear connection in full-depth precast concrete deck bridges is obtained from experiments. 3-dimensional finite element analyses of push-out specimen are carried out to investigate the effects of characteristics of filling material strength in shear connection on shear stiffness and local stress distribution. The load-slip relations obtained from the analyses are compared with those of experiments. The equation of initial shear stiffness of shear connection in precast concrete deck bridge is proposed. Linear analyses are performed to evaluate the effects of the shank diameter of shear connector and the strength of mortar on the characteristics of deterioration and failure load obtained by the failure criterions of each material. The failure loads are estimated and compared with test results.
Cross-sectional distortions take place when steel box girders a re subjected to torsional moment, as a consequence of which distortional warping stresses are necessarily developed. Additional normal stresses due to the distortion are should be included at the design stage. The relative magnitude with respect to the maximum bending stress are kept less than the specific values, i.e., at 5~10%, by properly spaced intermediate diaphragms that could prevent the distortional deformation of the box girder. However, current design equations for the stiffness of intermediate diaphragms were derived based on BEF. In this study, the area required by the intermediate diaphragm members are investigated through three-dimensional finite element analyses. The results of the analyses indicate that the current equations give to conservative values for the intermediate diaphragm of box girder bridges. Finally, an improved equation for the area of the intermediate diaphragm is derived from a regression analysis from the finite element analysis results.
In this study, the effects of cross beams on the lateral distribution of live loads in composite rolled H-beam girder bridges, were investigated through three-dimensional finite element analysis. The parameters considered in this study were the inertial moment ratio between the main girder and the cross beam, the presence of the cross beam, and the number of cross beams. The live load lateral distribution factors were investigated through finite element analysis and the customary grid method. The results show that there was no difference between the bridge models with and without a cross beam. The cross beam of the beam and frame types also showed almost the same live load lateral distribution factors. However, the finite element analysis showed that the concrete slab deck plays a major role in the lateral distribution of a live load, and consequently, the effect of the cross beam is not so insignificant that it can be neglected.
The paper describes a theoretical model for the prediction of bridge temperatures from meteorological data measured at bridge site and local meteorological center together with existing finite element heat transfer theory and solar radiation transfer theory to determine the time dependent temperature distribution of bridge. In this analytical model, the most adequate equation for the calculation of solar radiation on the bridge surface, which is dominant in day time is described based on the results of several experimental studies for the solar energy. The validity of this model is tested against field data obtained from long term experimental program on Sadang Viaduct in Seoul. Also, this paper describes the linear correlation between design variables and meteorological data to establish analytical criteria for the prediction of the average temperature, which are responsible for the longitudinal deformation of the bridges and of the vertical differential temperature profiles. which are responsible for the bending deformations from the long term experimental results.
A reliability analysis of the fatigue failure of highway steel bridges was performed by applying the Miner's fatigue damage rule for the fatigue design truck proposed for the LRFD code and for the current DB 24 truck. The limit state function for fatigue failure is expressed as a function of various random variables that affect fatigue damage. Among these variables, the statistical parameters for the equivalent moment, the impact factor, and the loadometer were obtained by analyzing recently measured domestic traffic data, and the parameters for the fatigue strength, the girder distribution factor, and the headway factor were obtained from the measured data reported in literature. Based on the reliability analysis, the fatigue truck model for the LRFD code was proposed. After applying the proposed fatigue truck to the LRFD code, 16 composite plate and box girder bridges were designed based on the LRFD method, and the LRFD design results for the fatigue limit state were compared with those by the current KHBDC.
In this study, stochastic responses of a cable-stayed bridge subjected to the spatially varying earthquake ground motion are investigated by the finite element method taking into account soil-structure interaction (SSI) effects. The considered bridge in the analysis is Quincy Bay-view Bridge built on the Mississippi River in between 1983-1987 in Illinois, USA. The bridge is composed of two H-shaped concrete towers, double plane fan type cables and a composite concrete-steel girder deck. In order to determine the stochastic response of the bridge, a two-dimensional lumped masses model is considered. Incoherence, wave-passage and site response effects are taken into account for the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Depending on variation in the earthquake motion, the response values of the cable-stayed bridge supported on firm, medium and soft foundation soil are obtained, separately. The effects of SSI on the stochastic response of the cable-stayed bridge are also investigated including foundation as a rigidly capped vertical pile groups. In this approach, piles closely grouped together beneath the towers are viewed as a single equivalent upright beam. The soil-pile interaction is linearly idealized as an upright beam on Winkler foundation model which is commonly used to study the response of single piles. A sufficient number of springs on the beam should be used along the length of the piles. The springs near the surface are usually the most important to characterize the response of the piles surrounded by the soil; thus a closer spacing may be used in that region. However, in generally springs are evenly spaced at about half the diameter of the pile. The results of the stochastic analysis with and without the SSI are compared each other while the bridge is under the sway of the spatially varying earthquake ground motion. Specifically, in case of rigid towers and soft soil condition, it is pointed out that the SSI should be significantly taken into account for the design of such bridges.

In general, load carrying capacity, one of the load & resistance capacities in bridges, has more margins than the load carrying capacity evaluated with theoretical methods, unless there are severe damages, defects or material deterioration phenomena that can have a great impact on the behavior of bridges. However, errors have been already included in the current processes of loading tests and structural analysis for measuring load carrying capacity, thus devaluing the reliability of response adjustment factor. Therefore, this study found out the problems of existing electric resistance strain and displacement sensors in sensor suite to solve the problems with sensors and the errors in the appropriateness of structural analysis model, thereby leading to the changes into an optical fiber smart sensor with excellent performance. Besides, the study attempted to ensure the accuracy of response adjustment factor by selecting the optimal models through the interpretation of various structural analysis models.
