  • In this study, the effects of embedded optical fibers on the static properties under tensile load and dynamic properties under fatigue load of composite laminates were investigated by experimental tests and finite element analysis. Based on the results, it can be concluded that the embedded optical fiber sensors do not have significant effects on the structural integrity of the smart composite structures except when the sensors are embedded perpendicular to the adjacent reinforcing fibers under fatigue loading. An intensity-based optical fiber sensor was embedded in the crossply composite laminates to monitor the fatigue damage by detecting the stiffness changes of the laminates. The result of this experiment has shown that the intensity-based optical fiber sensor has large potential to monitor the fatigue damage of composite structures by detecting the stiffness changes of the structures with simple and inexpensive instruments and without complex post-processing of measured signals. In addition, the optical fiber sensor showed good resistance to fatigue loading and wide sensing ranges of stiffness.

  • Background and Purpose: Electroencephalogram(EEG) is a multi-scaled signal consisting of several components of time series with different origins. Recently, because of the absence of an identified metric which quantifies the complex amount of information, there are many limitations in using such a linear method. According to chaos theory, irregular signals of EEG can also result from low dimensional deterministic chaos. Chaotic nonlinear dynamics in the EEG can be studied by calculating the correlation dimension. The aim of this study is to analyze correlation between the correlation dimension of EEG and psychological Test (TCI). Methods: Before and after moxibustion treatment, EEG raw data were measured by moving windows during 15 minutes. The correlation dimension(D2) was calculated from stabilized 40 seconds in 15 minutes data. 8 channels EEG study on the Fp, F, T, P was carried out in 30 subjects. Results: Correlation analysis of TCI test is calculated with deterministic non-linear data and stochastic non-linear data. 1. Novelty seeking in temperament is positive correlated with D2 of EEG on Fp. 2. reward dependence in temperament is positive correlated with D2 of EEG on T3,T4 and negative correlated with D2 of EEG on P3,P4. 3. self directedness in character is positive correlated with D2 of EEG on F4, P3. 4. Harm avoidance is negative correlated with D2 of EEG on Fp2, T3, P3. Conclusion: These results suggest that nonlinear analysis of EEG can quantify dynamic state of brain abolut psychological Test (TCI).

  • Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium causes human gastroenteritis and a systemic typhoid-like infection in mice. A critical virulence determinant of Salmonella is the ability to invade mammalian cells. The expression of genes required for invasion is tightly regulated by environmental conditions and a variety of regulatory genes. The hilA regulator encodes an OmpR/ToxR family transcriptional regulator that activates the expression of invasion genes in response to both environmental and genetic regulatory factors. Work from several laboratories has highlighted that regulation of hilA expression is a key point for controlling expression of the invasive phenotype. A number of positive regulators of hilA expression have been identified including csrAB, sirA/barA, pstS, hilC/sirC/sprA, fis, and hilD. HilD, an AraC/XylS type transcriptional regulator, is of particular importance as a mutation in hilD results in a 14-fold decrease in chromosomal hilA::Tn5lacZY-080 expression and a 53-fold decrease in invasion of HEp-2 cells. It is believed that HilD directly regulates hilA expression as it has been shown to bind to hilA promoter sequences. In addition, our research group, and others, have identified genes (hilE, hha, pag, and lon) that negatively affect hilA transcription. HilE appears to be an important Salmonella-specific regulator that plays a critical role in inactivating hilA expression. Recent work in our lab has been directed at understanding how environmental signals that affect hilA expression may be processed through a hilE pathway to modulate expression of hilA and the invasive phenotype. The current understanding of this complex regulatory system is reviewed.

  • A challenge in the redox field is the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms, by which $H_2O_2$ mediates signal transduction in cells. This is relevant since redox pathways are disturbed in some pathologies. The transcription factor OxyR is the $H_2O_2$ sensor in bacteria, whereas Cys-based peroxidases are involved in the perception of this oxidant in eukaryotic cells. Three possible mechanisms may be involved in $H_2O_2$ signaling that are not mutually exclusive. In the simplest pathway, $H_2O_2$ signals through direct oxidation of the signaling protein, such as a phosphatase or a transcription factor. Although signaling proteins are frequently observed in the oxidized state in biological systems, in most cases their direct oxidation by $H_2O_2$ is too slow ($10^1M^{-1}s^{-1}$ range) to outcompete Cys-based peroxidases and glutathione. In some particular cellular compartments (such as vicinity of NADPH oxidases), it is possible that a signaling protein faces extremely high $H_2O_2$ concentrations, making the direct oxidation feasible. Alternatively, high $H_2O_2$ levels can hyperoxidize peroxiredoxins leading to local building up of $H_2O_2$ that then could oxidize a signaling protein (floodgate hypothesis). In a second model, $H_2O_2$ oxidizes Cys-based peroxidases that then through thiol-disulfide reshuffling would transmit the oxidized equivalents to the signaling protein. The third model of signaling is centered on the reducing substrate of Cys-based peroxidases that in most cases is thioredoxin. Is this model, peroxiredoxins would signal by modulating the thioredoxin redox status. More kinetic data is required to allow the identification of the complex network of thiol switches.

  • This paper proposes a multiple-relay-assisted single side band (SSB) space frequency block code (SFBC) single carrier (SC)-frequency division multiple access (FDMA) system and measures the performance of SSB SFBC SC-FDMA transmission system with the signal-to-noise power ratio SNR) between relays and a destination station. As we know, the performance of relay-assisted transmission systems can be easily improved by re-transmitting to the destination station after applying block code to the recovered transmitted signals of relays. In this paper, the performance improvement of the relay-assisted SSB SC-FDMA system can be obtained without any significant increase of system computational complexity by implementing block code with the complex conjugates symmetric characteristic of SSB system. The simulation result shows that the SNR performance of the proposed multiple-relay-assisted SSB SFBC SC-FDMA system is about 4 dB better than the performance of the single-relay-assisted SSB SC-FDMA system at the symbol error rate of 10-2.

  • In this paper, in order to exclude the influence of BAN(Body Area Network) signals operating in the ISM band, the design and optimization process of an on-body microstrip patch antenna operating at 4.567 GHz is presented. The antenna for the monitoring of the lower legs with cancellous osteoporosis is designed to be lightweight and compact with improved return loss and bandwidth. The structure around the applied lower leg consisted of a five-layer dielectric plane. Taking into account losses, the complex dielectric constant of each layer is calculated using multi Cole-Cole model parameters, whereas a unipolar model is used for normal or osteoporotic cancellous bones. The return loss of the coaxial feed antenna on the phantom is -67.26 dB at 4.567 GHz, and in the case of osteoporosis, at the same frequency the return loss difference is 35.88 dB, and the resonance frequency difference is about 7 MHz.

  • The diffraction properties of optical signals by multi-layered periodic structures is formulated in two-dimensional space by using Fourier expansions associated with basic grating profile. The fields in each layer are then expressed in terms of characteristic modes, and the complete solution is found rigorously by using a modal transmission-line theory(MTLT) to address the pertinent boundary-value problems. Such an approach can treat periodic arbitrary gratings containing arbitrarily shaped dielectric components, which may generally have optical properties along directions that are parallel or perpendicular to the multi-layers. This paper illustrates the present approach by comparing our numerical results with data reported in the past for simple periodic circular 2D structures. In addition, this proposed theory can apply easily for more complex configurations, which include multiple periodic regions with several possible canonic shapes and high dielectric constants.

  • Polypyrrole is a typical electrical conducting polymer, which has an excellent charge transport property. Cyclodextrins are a group of toxic-free and cyclic oligosaccharide molecules, capable of capturing low molecular weight chemicals. Considering these advantages, hybrid materials of polypyrrole and cyclodextrin can be used to detect hazardous compounds. Cyclodextrin molecules can accommodate toxic chemicals by the formation of host-guest complexes and generate electric signals, which are effectively delivered by polypyrrole backbone. In this study, the polypyrrole/cyclodextrin hybrid material was prepared using a facile wet method and included into a hydrogel. Subsequently, it was applied to a simple sensor system with a gold-patterned electrode for the detection of potentially hazardous material, methyl paraben. Compared with pristine polypyrrole, it was found that the polypyrrole/cyclodextrin hybrid showed an improved performance. This study can be an example of using environmentally benign conducting polymer/cyclodextrin hybrids as sensing media.

  • Bandwidth Extension refers to restoring and expanding a narrow band signal(NB) that is damaged or damaged in the encoding and decoding process due to the lack of channel capacity or the characteristics of the codec installed in the mobile communication device. It means converting to a wideband signal(WB). Bandwidth extension research mainly focuses on voice signals and converts high bands into frequency domains, such as SBR (Spectral Band Replication) and IGF (Intelligent Gap Filling), and restores disappeared or damaged high bands based on complex feature extraction processes. In this paper, we propose a model that outputs an bandwidth extended signal based on an autoencoder among deep learning models, using the residual connection of one-dimensional convolutional neural networks (CNN), the bandwidth is extended by inputting a time domain signal of a certain length without complicated pre-processing. In addition, it was confirmed that the damaged high band can be restored even by training on a dataset containing various types of sound sources including music that is not limited to the speech.

  • In this paper, in order to minimize limitations such as signal interference and positioning errors in existing indoor positioning systems, a smart LED-based positioning system for excellent line-of-sight radio environments and precise location tracking is proposed to improve accuracy. An IEEE 802.4 Zigbee module is mounted on the SMPS board of a smart LED; RSSI and LQI signals are received from a moving tag, and the system is configured to transmit the measured data to the positioning server through a gateway. For the experiment, the necessary hardware, such as the gateway and the smart LED module, were separately designed, and the experiment was conducted after configuring the system in an external field office. The positioning error was within 70cm as a result of performing complex calculations in the positioning server after transmitting a vector value of the moving object obtained from the direction sensor, together with a signal from the moving object received by the smart LED. The result is a significantly improved positioning error, compared to an existing short-range wireless communications-based system, and shows the level at which commercial products can be implemented.
