The Baekildo fault, a dextral strike-slip fault developed in Baekil Island, Goheung-gun, controls the distribution of tuffaceous sandstone and lapilli tuff and shows a complex fracture system around it. In this study, we examined the spatial variation in the geometry and connectivity of the fracture system by using circular sampling and topological analysis based on a detailed fracture trace map. As a result, both intensity and connectivity of the fracture system are higher in tuffaceous sandstone than in lapilli tuff. Furthermore, the degree of the orientation dispersion, intensity, and average length of fracture sets vary depending on the along-strike variation in structural position in the tuffaceous sandstone. Notably, curved fractures abutting the fault at a high angle occur at a fault bend. Based on the detailed observation and analyses of the fracture system, we conclude as follows: (1) the high intensity of the fracture system in the tuffaceous sandstone is caused by the higher content of brittle minerals such as quartz and feldspar. (2) the connectivity of the fracture system gets higher with the increase in the diversity and average length of the fracture sets. Finally, (3) the fault bend with geometric irregularity is interpreted to concentrate and disturb the local stress leading to the curved fractures abutting the fault at a high angle. This contribution will provide important insight into various geologic and structural factors that control the development of fracture systems around faults.
In this study, the sensitivity analysis of hydraulic conductivity and separation distance (distance between injection well and pumping well) was analyzed by establishing a conceptual model considering the hydrogeologic characteristics of facility agricultural complex in Korea. In the conceptual model, natural characteristics (topography and geology, precipitation, hydraulic conductivity, etc.) and artificial characteristics (separation distance from injection well to pumping well, injection rate and pumping rate, etc.) is entered, and sensitivity analysis was performed 12 scenarios using a combination of hydraulic conductivity ($10^{-1}cm/sec$, $10^{-2}cm/sec$, $10^{-3}cm/sec$, $10^{-4}cm/sec$) and separation distance (10 m, 50 m, 100 m). Groundwater drawdown at the monitoring well was increased as the hydraulic conductivity decreased and the separation distance increased. From the regression analysis of groundwater drawdown as a hydraulic conductivity at the same separation distance, it was found that the groundwater level fluctuation of artificial recharge aquifer was dominantly influenced by hydraulic conductivity. In the condition that the hydraulic conductivity of artificial recharge aquifer was $10^{-2}cm/sec$ or more, the radius of influence of groundwater level was within 20 m, but In the condition that the hydraulic conductivity is $10^{-3}cm/sec$ or less, it is confirmed that the radius of influence of groundwater increases sharply as the separation distance increases.
Micromagnetism explores magnetic configurations in nano-scales to visualize the details of magnetic domain structures, and also can produce snapshots of complex remanence or other magnetic states. The particle shape has a profound effect on the magnetic hysteresis. For instance, octahedral magnetite showed higher coercivity and squareness than cubic magnetite.
Mesothermal, tellurium-bearing gold-silver vein mineralization of the Yuryang mine was formed in mineralogically complex quartz-sulfide veins that filled the fault fractures in Precambrian gneiss within Gyeonggi Massif. Ore grades average 179 g/ton gold with a gold/silver ratio of 1.5 : 1. Ore mineralization was deposited in single stage. Major ore mineralization can be divided into two mineralization phases with increasing paragenetic time: Fe-sulfide and base-metal mineralization phase $\rightarrow$ telluride mineralization phase. This paper develops a four-unknown refined plate theory and the Galerkin method to investigate the size-dependent stability behavior of functionally graded material (FGM) under the thermal environment and the FGM having temperature-dependent material properties. In the current study two scale coefficients are considered to examine buckling behavior much accurately. Reuss micromechanical scheme is utilized to estimate the material properties of inhomogeneous nano-size plates. Governing differential equations, classical and non-classical boundary conditions are obtained by utilizing Hamiltonian principles. The results showed the high importance of considering temperature-dependent material properties for buckling analysis. Different influencing parametric on the buckling is studied which may help in design guidelines of such complex structures.

Petrological and mineralogical analyses were conducted to identify minerals containing radioactive elements (uranium) in the Chiaksan gneiss complex and to confirm their association with the surrounding groundwater. Fourteen minerals were identified through the microscopic and electron microscopy (SEMEDS) investigation. The principal minerals included plagioclase, biotite, quartz, alkali feldspar, chlorite, and calcite. Minor minerals were sphene, allanite, apatite, zircon, thorite, titanite, pyrite, and galena. A small amount of thorite was observed in the size of ~1 mm within macrocrystalline allanite. Allanite, which includes a large amount of rare earth elements, appeared in three distinctive patterns. The results of the EPMA analyses indicated that macrocrystalline allanite had higher elemental contents of TiO2~1.70 wt.%, Ce2O3~11.86 wt.%, FeO ~13.31 wt.%, MgO ~0.90 wt.% and ThO2 ~1.06 wt.% with the lowest average content of Al2O3 17.35 ± 2.15 wt.% (n = 7), CaO 12.13 ± 1.81 wt.% (n = 7). An allanite existing at the edge of the sphenes encompassing titanites had a higher element content of Al2O3 ~24.00 wt.%, Nd2O3 ~5.10 wt.%, Sm2O3~0.66 wt.%, Dy2O3~0.86 wt.% and Y2O3~1.38 wt.% with the lowest average content of TiO2 0.35 ± 0.21 wt.% (n = 11), Ce2O3 5.25 ± 1.03 wt.% (n = 11), FeO 9.84 ± 0.26 wt.% (n = 11), MgO 0.12 ± 0.05 wt.% (n = 11), and La2O3 1.49 ± 0.29 wt.% (n = 11). Allanites in a matrix of parental rocks exhibited intermediate values between the two elemental compositions mentioned above. None of the uranium-rich minerals were observed in the migmatitic gneiss within the study area. Consequently, the origin of uranium in the groundwater was not associated with the geology of the surrounding environment, but our investigation proved the existence of abundant allanites containing significant amounts of radioactive thorium and rare earth elements.
Ore deposits of Dongwon mine are composed of numerous gold and silver veins emplaced in sedimentary rocks of Cambrian Choseon Supergroup and granitoids of Cretaceous age. Ore veins of the mine can be divided into gold and silver veins on the base of vein structure, mineral assemblage and vein trends. Mutual relationships between gold and silver veins are uncertain. Gold veins are simple veins which are composed of base-metal sulfides, and electrum with quartz and ankerite. On the other hand, silver veins are complex veins which reveal three distinct stages of mineral deposition based on vein structure; stage I, deposition of small amounts of oxides and pyrite with quartz; stage II, deposition of base-metal sulfides, small amounts of Ag-bearing minerals, calcite and quartz; stage III, deposition of base metal sulfides, electrum, Ag-sulfosalts, native silver, carbonates and quartz. Homogenization temperature and salinity of fluid inclusion from quartz of gold vein are as follows; $229^{\circ}$ to $283^{\circ}C$, 4.7 to 6.4 wt.% equivalent NaCI. The ore mineralogy suggests that temperature(T) and sulfur fugacity($fs_2$) of the formation of the gold vein and stage III of silver vein are estimated as T ; $294^{\circ}$ to $318^{\circ}C$, $fs_2\;10^{-9.4}$ to $10^{-10.1}$ atm. and T; $240^{\circ}$ to $279^{\circ}C$, $fs_2;10^{-11.1}$ to $10^{-17.3}$ atm. respectively. Pressure condition during gold vein formation estimated from data of ore mineralogy and fluid inclusion range 500 to 750 bar.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate compatability of seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake to those of Korean Peninsula seismotectonics. The compatability could be used to make Korean type response spectrum from the strong ground motions observed from the assingned earthquake. The July 21, 1952, Kern County, California, earthquake is the largest earthquake to occur in the western U.S. since 1906, and the repeat of this event poses a significant seismic hazard. The Kern County event was a complex thrusting event, with a surface rupture pattern that varied from pure leftlateral strike-slip to pure dip-slip. A time dependent moment tensor inversion was applied to ten observed teleseismic long-period body waves to investigate the source complexity. Since a conventional moment tensor inversion(constant geometry through time) returns a non-double-couple source when the seismic source changes(fault orientation and direction of slip) with time, we are required to use the time dependent moment tensor which allows a first-order mapping of the geometric and temporal complexity. From the moment tensor inversion, a two-point seismic source model with significant overlap for the White Wolf fault, which propagates upward(20 km to 5 km) from SW to NE, fits most of the observed seismic waveforms in the least squares sense. Comparison of P, T and B axes of focal mechanisms and focal depths suggests that seismic source characteristics of the Kern County earthquake is consistant with those of Korean Peninsula Seismotectonics.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the correlation of soil properties in coastal soft ground. For the purpose of this study, several coastal soft ground areas were selected. Many large scale construction works are being executed and will increase continuously in these soft ground areas. So, soil property in these areas is very important. The grounds forming coastal areas are affected by seawater movement. So, most of these areas consist of alluvium stratum. Therefore, soil properties of eastern and southern coastal areas are very complex. Many laboratory tests were executed with disturbed and undisturbed soil samples. Undisturbed samples were taken by using thin walled tubes and transported into the laboratory with caution, so as not to disturb the sample. The consistent rate of fine-grained content in these areas is over 90%. Also, these areas contain higher water content and clay content. Therefore, knowing these soil properties, it is possible to safely design fabrics and constructions.
Sorption characteristics of Pb, Cu, Cd, and Zn onto Ca- and Na-bentonites were investigated by the batch experiments in the condition of various pHs and concentrations of groundwater major anions (${So_4}^{2-}$ and ($HCO_3$), which can form a complex with heavy metals. The sorption removal of heavy metals steadily increases as pH increases. The sorption capability about heavy metals of both Ca-bentonite and Na-bentonite is in the order of Pb>Cu>Zn>Cd. The effect of pH and selectivity of heavy metals of bentonites were explained by the change of surface charge of bentonite and the speciation of heavy metals. Na-bentonite has a little higher sorption ability about heavy metals than that of Ca-bentonite. A high sorption removal of Pb in 0.1M sulfate solution may be attributed to the precipitation of $PbSo_4$(anglesite). However, sulfate has a slight effect on the sorption of CU, Cd and Zn. More than 99% of heavy metals were removed from the 0.1 M bicarbonate solution. However, the efficiency of sorption removal of heavy metals highly decreases in the bicarbonate solution of $10^{-2}$M to $10^{-4}$M. The speciation and saturation index calculated by the WATEQ4F program indicate that the sorption of anionic complexes such as ${Pb(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cd(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Zn(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$, ${Cu(CO_3)_2}^{2-}$ and the precipitation of the solid phases such as $PbCO_3$(cerrusite), $ZnCO_3$(smithsonite), $CdCO_3$(obtavite) are involved in sorption removal of heavy metals in bicarbonate solution. The sorption capability about heavy metals of bentonites in the presence of anions shows the following order: Pb>Cu Cd>Zn.
