  • As the sequencing batch reactor process is a time-oriented system, it has advantages of the flexibility in operation for the biological nutrient removal. Because the sequencing batch reactor is operated in a batch system, respiration rate is more sensitive and obvious than in a continuous system. The variation of respiration rate in the process well represented the characteristics of biological reactions, especially nitrification. The respiration rate dropped rapidly and greatly with the completion of nitrification, and the maximum respiration rate of nitrification showed the activity of nitrifiers. This study suggested a strategy to control the aeration of the sequencing batch reactor based on respirometry. Aeration time of the optimal aerobic period required for nitrification was daily adjusted according to the dynamics of respiration rate. The aeration time was mainly correlated with influent nitrogen loadings. The anoxic period was extended through aeration control facilitating a longer endogenous denitrification reaction time. By respirometric aeration control in the sequencing batch reactor, energy saving and process performance improvement could be achieved.

  • The smart watch is the most popular wearable computing device because it takes a form of wristwatch. Many smart watches have adopted the touch screen interface due to the limited size of display. This paper focuses on touch key size and spacing that affect the usability about the touch key of smart watch. The experiments were made for four touch key sizes (width${\times}$height; $5{\times}5$, $5{\times}7$, $7{\times}5$, $7{\times}7mm$) and nine touch key spacing (vertical${\times}$horizontal; $0{\times}0$, $0{\times}1$, $0{\times}3$, $1{\times}0$, $1{\times}1$, $1{\times}3$, $3{\times}0$, $3{\times}1$, $3{\times}3mm$). The completion time, error rate, control discomfort and identification discomfort were measured. The touch key size $7{\times}7$, $7{\times}5$ and the touch key spacing $3{\times}3$, $1{\times}3$ provided the best results in terms of the completion time and the control discomfort, while the square touch key ($7{\times}7$, $5{\times}5$) provided the best performance for the error rate measure. The result of this study can help ergonomically design the touch interface of the smart watch.

  • Background: In the adjuvant treatment of breast cancer, anthracycline and taxane based regimens can be used concomitantly or sequentially. The best order in the sequential regimens has yet to be well established. This study evaluated the feasibility of 4 cycles of adjuvant taxotere ($100mg/m^2$) every 3 weeks followed by 4 cycles of doxorubicin ($60mg/m^2$) and cyclophosphamide ($600mg/m^2$) every 3 weeks. The primary outcome was the safety profile. Secondary outcomes were disease free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). Materials and Methods: This non-randomize prospective phase II stud was performed at Jordan University of Science and Technology and its affiliated King Abdulla Teaching Hospital between July 2009 and August 2010. Data collection was closed on May $31^{th}$, 2015 giving a median follow up period of 62 months. The study was approved by the institutional review board and a written informed consent was obtained for each patient. Results: Fifty patients were enrolled. The median age was 53.1 years (range 34-76). One patient (2%) had stage I disease, 17 (34%) stage II, and 32 (64.0%) stage III. Forty-six patients were evaluable for efficacy analysis. The completion rate was 95.7%. No dose modifications were needed. The incidences of grade 3-4 neutropenia and febrile neutropenia were 14 % and 10%. No grade 3-4 non-hematological adverse events were encountered. At a median follow up time of 62 months the OS and the DFS rates were 76.1% and 56.5%. Those for stages I and II combined were 100% and 75%. Conclusions: Taxotere first followed by doxorubicin-cyclophosphamide appears a feasible regimen as evidenced by an acceptable completion rate, a satisfactory safety profile, and an OS and DFS rates comparable to other studies.

  • The elderly population is rapidly increasing worldwide, but many face challenges in using digital tools like the Internet due to health and incapacity issues. Existing online search user interfaces (UIs) often overlook the specific usability needs of the elderly. This study proposes an adaptable web search UI model for the elderly, based on their perspectives, to enhance search performance and usability. The proposed UI model is evaluated through comparative usability testing with 20 participants, comparing it to the Google search UI. Effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction are measured using task completion time, error rate, and subjective preferences. The results show significant differences (p > 0.05) between the proposed web search UI model and the Google search UI. The proposed UI model achieves higher subjective satisfaction levels, indicating better alignment with the needs and preferences of elderly users. It also reduces task completion time, indicating improved efficiency, and decreases the error rate, suggesting enhanced effectiveness. These findings emphasize the importance of considering the unique usability needs of the elderly when designing search UIs. The proposed adaptable web search UI model offers a promising approach to enhance the digital experiences of elderly users. This study lays the groundwork for further development and refinement of adaptable web search UI models that cater to the specific needs of elderly users, enabling designers to create more inclusive and user-friendly search interfaces for the growing elderly population.

  • Background: Surgery is the corner stone for the management of rectal cancer. The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the optimal time of surgical resection after the completion of neoadjuvant chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) in treatment of locally advanced rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: This study compared 2 groups of patients with locally advanced rectal cancer, treated with neoadjuvant CRT followed by surgical resection either 6-8 weeks or 9-14 weeks after the completion of chemo-radiotherapy. The impact of delaying surgery was tested in comparison to early surgical resection after completion of chemo-radiotherapy. Results: The total significant response rate that could result in functional preservation was estimated to be 3.85% in group I and 15.4% in group II. Some 9.62% of our patients had residual malignant cells at one cm surgical margin. All those patients with positive margins at one cm were in group I (19.23%). There was less operative time in group II, but the difference between both groups was statistically insignificant (P=0.845). The difference between both groups regarding operative blood loss and intra operative blood transfusion was significantly less in group II (P=0.044). There was no statistically significant difference between both groups regarding the intra operative complications (P=0.609). The current study showed significantly less post-operative hospital stay period, and less post-operative wound infection in group II (P=0.012 and 0.017). The current study showed more tumor regression and necrosis in group II with a highly significant main effect of time F=61.7 (P<0.001). Pathological TN stage indicated better pathological tumor response in group II (P=0.04). The current study showed recurrence free survival for all cases at 18 months of 84.2%. In group I, survival rate at the same duration was 73.8%, however none of group II cases had local recurrence (censored) (P=0.031). Disease free survival (DFS) during the same duration (18 months) was 69.4 % for patients in group I and 82.3% for group II (P=0.429). Conclusions: Surgical resection delay up to 9-14 weeks after chemo-radiation was associated with better outcome and better recurrence free survival.

  • Ultra-drying [<5.0% seed moisture content (SMC)] storage technique is a cost-effective storage method for oily seeds. To decide proper ultra-drying condition for soybean seeds, drying rate was compared three silica gel to seed ratios, two seed sizes with varietal difference, two kinds of container, and three seed amounts per container under :t 23$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$. When the relative humidity (RH) was reduced at the rate of less than 0.1 % a day, silica gel was replaced with dry one by 47 days. Higher silica gel to seed ratios (3:1 and 2:1) dried faster than lower ratio (1:1) until 28 days, but not after 43 days of drying. Also, large seeded variety was dried faster than small seeded variety. Kinds of container and seed amounts per container didn't show differences in drying of soybean seeds. After completion of ultra-drying, percentage germination by standard germination test (SGT) was not different among silica gel to seed ratios, kinds of container, and seed amounts per container, except among seed sizes (varieties). Before SGT, soybean seeds were premoistened using saturated ${CaCl}_2$ for 48 hours and ${NH}_4$Cl for 24 hours in desiccators. To compare germinability between ordinary-dried seeds and ultra-dried seeds, the seeds of seven soybean varieties, which were varying in size from 8.1 to 34.9 g per 100 seeds, were dried using same amount of silica gel under 23$\pm$1$^{\circ}C$. After completion of 76 days of drying, SMCs were reduced to 3.13-3.45% from 7.86-8.82%. SMC after completion of drying was not correlated with 100-seed weight (r=0.556). Before germination tests, soybean seeds were premoistened using saturated salt solutions. Percentage germination was higher with ultra-dried seeds than ordinary-dried seeds in SGT and higher with ordinary-dried seeds than ultra-dried seeds in AAT at the beginning of storage and after 6 months storage, but general trend of percentage germination was not observed among varieties classified by 100-seed weight. From these results, we concluded that further studies are needed to improve ultra-drying storage method for soybean seeds.

  • Objectives: This study aimed to identify the factors related to the completion status of continuing education and to help develop professional ability by presenting improvement directions. Methods: A questionnaire survey involving 500 dental hygienists working at 155 dental clinics in Gwang-ju was conducted between June 19 and July 29, 2017. Descriptive analysis, chi-square tests, and t-tests were conducted using Statistical Package for Social Sciences Version 21.0 for Windows. Finally, to investigate the factors related to the completion of continuing education, logistic regression analysis was performed. Results: The odds ratio (OR) was higher in the group with more than 16 years of total work carrier (OR=3.40, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.22-9.45) than that in the group with 1-5 years of work carrier. Groups receiving information from associations (OR=5.35, 95% CI=1.74-16.40), groups that directly search for information (OR=6.53, 95% CI=1.84-23.12), and groups receiving information from colleagues (OR=3.55, 95% CI=1.17-10.77) had higher ORs than groups receiving no information. The OR was higher in the group receiving cost support for participation (OR=2.20, 95% CI=1.06-4.55) than the group receiving no support. Regarding total education completion status in 2012-2014, groups that completed grades 1-7 (OR=2.51, 95% CI=1.35-4.64) and those that completed grade 8 or higher (OR=14.37, 95% CI=7.68-26.89) had higher ORs than groups who received no education. Conclusions: The rate of completion of continuing education can be increased by reviewing the course contents, publicity activities, and cost of continuing education.

  • A finite volume model is developed to simulate the surface irrigation at a paddy field. The model's capabilities are validated through comparison with the simulafed results and the observed data obtained by various experimental tests, and the simulated results are in good agreement with the observed pending depth. The result of surface irrigation simulation shows that the longer the paddy field's the length of long-sided becomes, the longer the advance and storage time is taken. To analyze surface irrigation performance with variable inflow rate, three patterns of flow variation-constant rate, initially high then low, and initially low then high-were studied. The results show that at the pattern with initially high followed by low during the latter half of the irrigation the advance time is shortest, but the pending depth of irrigation completion and irrigation effiency are the little difference between irrigation patterns.

  • Most female Great Tits lay one egg each day until the clutch is complete. However, some exceptions are found. “Pause day/s” most frequently occur after the 1st egg is laid. In general, egg-size increase with laying sequence, but there is year-to-year variation. The relationship between egg size and laying sequence is found more significantly in relatively larger clutches than in smaller ones. Great Tits tend to advance the hatching of their chicks by starting to incubate earlier in relation to clutch completion as the breeding season progresses. hatching asynchrony affects chick´s growth rate, but when the effect of laying date on hatching asynchrony is controlled, the effect of hatching asynchrony on growth rate is not found. These findings support the ´hurry-up´ hypothesis.

  • In general, understanding groundwater flow in fractured bedrock is critical during tunnel and underground cavern construction. In that case, borehole data may be useful to examine groundwater flow properties of the fractured bedrock from pre-excavation until completion stages, yet sufficient borehole data is not often available to acquire. This study evaluated groundwater discharge rate into Jikri tunnel in Gyeonggi province using hydraulic parameters, groundwater level data in the later stage of tunneling, national groundwater monitoring network data, and electrical resistivity survey data. Groundwater flow rate into the tunnel by means of analytical method was estimated $7.12-74.4\;m^3/day/m$ while the groundwater flow rate was determined as $64.8\;m^3/day/m$ by means of numerical modeling. The estimated values provided by the numerical modeling may be more logical than those of the analytical method because the numerical modeling could take into account spatial variation of hydraulic parameters that was not possible by using the analytical method. Transient modeling for a period of one year from the tunnel completion resulted in the recovery of pre-excavation groundwater level.
