  • Video copy detection is a complementary approach to watermarking. As opposed to watermarking, which relies on inserting a distinct pattern into the video stream, video copy detection techniques match content-based signatures to detect copies of video. Existing typical content-based copy detection schemes have relied on image matching. This paper proposes two new sequence matching techniques for copy detection and compares the performance with color techniques that is the existing techniques. Motion, intensity and color-based signatures are compared in the context of copy detection. Comparison of experimental results are reported on detecting copies of movie clips.

  • Variations of temperature field in a Hele-Shaw convection cell (HSC) were measured using a holographic interferometry with varying Rayleigh number. Experimental results show a steady flow pattern at low Rayleigh numbers and a time-dependent periodic flow at high Rayleigh numbers. Especially, the period of oscillation at Ra = 6.35 $\times$ 10$^{6}$ was 62 seconds. Two different measurement methods of holographic interferometry, double-exposure method and real-time method, were employed to measure the temperature field variations of HSC convective flow. In the double-exposure method, unwanted waves can be eliminated and reconstruction images are clear, but transient flow structure cannot be observed clearly. On the other hand, transient flow can be observed and reconstructed well using the real-time method. However, the fringe patterns reconstructed by the real-time method contain more noise, compared with the double-exposure method. The two holographic interferometer techniques employed complementary in this study were proved to be useful fur analyzing the temperature field variations of unsteady thermal fluid flows.

  • The conjugation processes of a filamentous freshwater green alga Spirogyra varians were examined using FITC-lectins. Conjugation comprised five steps: 1) aligning with adjacent filaments, 2) formation of conjugation protru-sion (papilla), 3) fusion of the protrusions, 4) formation of conjugation tube, and 5) formation of zygotes. Three lectins, ConA, RCA and UEA, showed considerable labeling during the progression of conjuation. FITC-ConA labeled the surfaces of filaments throughout the whole conjugation processes. FITC-RCA labeling was observed at the conjugation protrusions only after the papilla formation. Strong labeling continued until formationg of zygotes at the contacting area where the conjugation tube developed, but no labeling was detected on the surface of vegetative filaments. The labeling decreased gradually over time and disappeared when zygotes were formed. FITC-UEA showed similar labeling pattern with FITC-RCA except that weak labeling remained after zygote formation. Inhibition experiments using RCA, UEA which are complementary to sugars L-fucose and D-galactose, showed considerable decrease of conjugation (<32% vs. 70% in control). These results suggested that the lectin-carbohydrate recognition system might be involved in the conjugation of spirogyra varians.

  • The effects of fiber waviness on tensile/compressive nonlinear elastic behaviors of graphite/epoxy unidirectional composite materials are studied theoretically and experimentally. New constitutive models are proposed to predict elastic properties and tensile/compressive nonlinear behaviors of composite materials. Three types of wavy pattern are considered: uniform, graded and localized fiber waviness. Complementary energy density and incremental method are used to incorporate the material and geometrical nonlinearities due to fiber waviness. Tensile/compressive tests are conducted on the specimens with fiber waviness. It is found that the predictions are in good agreement with the experimental results.

  • A compact ultra-wide band antenna with a quadruple band-notched characteristic is proposed. The proposed antenna consists of a slotted trapezoid patch radiator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, a pair of C-shaped band stop filters, and a rectangular ground plane. To realize the quadruple notch-band characteristic, a U-shaped slot, a complementary split ring resonator, an inverted U-shaped band stop filter, and two C-shaped band stop filters are utilized in this antenna. The antenna satisfies the -10 dB reflection coefficient bandwidth requirement in the frequency band of 2.88-12.67 GHz, with a band-rejection characteristic in the WiMAX (3.43-3.85 GHz), WLAN (5.26-6.01 GHz), X-band satellite communication (7.05-7.68 GHz), and ITU 8 GHz (8.08-8.87 GHz) signal bands. In addition, the proposed antenna has a compact volume of $30mm{\times}33.5mm{\times}0.8mm$ while maintaining omnidirectional patterns in the H-plane. The experimental and simulated results of the proposed antenna are shown to be in good agreement.

  • In this study, as a complementary study of the former study on indoor thermal environment in a tower type apartment house at tropical nights, a field measurement was conducted in winter season. Mainly, characteristics of heat storage and heat emission in apartment structures, in this study, were investigated. As results, indoor air temperature was changed in the range of $22.5^{\circ}C{\pm}1.0^{\circ}C$, and followed not the change of outdoor air temperature but the changed pattern of floor surface temperature. Wall surface temperature was unresponsive to the change of floor surface temperature compared with the change of indoor air temperature because wall structure was composed of concrete which has large heat capacity, and was changed in the range of $22.3^{\circ}C{\pm}0.6^{\circ}C$. Heat was stored continuously into the structures of wall and ceiling through the measurement term. and this means that a large heat capacity of the apartment structure acts as a disadvantage in winter season, too. As a total review of the study with the former study, a large heat capacity of the apartment structure acts against indoor thermal comfort in winter season as well as in summer season.

  • Pattern Recognition is one of the fundamental areas of computer vision. The recognition of patterns with varying size and severe defects is especially important. However, it is known that the conventional algorithms such as GHT or structural approaches have limitations in speed and accuracy. In this paper, in order to avoid above-mentioned problems, we propose a new recognition algorithm which exploits the histogram of contour directions and the sampled spot matching method. While the former provides little influence against size variation, the latter has strong immunity to noise and defects. We applied those proposed algorithms for the recognition of numbers extracted from the car number plates and shapes of aircraft. Experimental result shows that it is possible to solve above-mentioned problems by complementary uses of those two suggested algorithms. The contour directional histogram method resulted in high-speed of average 0.013 sec/char and 0.1 sec/aircraft-image on IBM-386. The accuracy of recognition is as high as 99%. Sampled spot matching method has less speed than the former one, however, it showed fairly strong immunity to noise and defects.

  • Although aspiration towards quality of life and holistic health has been growing faster in our modern society and the affordance of health in built environment has been more acknowledged, there has been hardly any development on built environment planning and design theory that can be comfortably and confidently used in creating built environment to promote holistic health. Thereby, this study sets out to experimently formulate a composite theory that explains the relationship between health and built environment. The main methodology of this study is literature review and analysis. Theories that have been applied in other similar fields were chosen to be analyzed by health related perspectives and graft those theories onto holistic health viewpoints to compose a comprehensive theory. Selected theories that were considered useful to be analyzed were Lawton's Environment Press Theory, Carp & Carp's Complementary & Congruence Theory, Valins' Activity-based Design Criteria Theory, Atchley's Continuity Theory, Murtha & Lee's User Benefit Criteria Theory, and Alexander's Pattern Language Theory. Characteristics of these theories were compared by their abstractness and concreteness, and the range of application, and analyzed by a holistic health perspective. Then, these theories were comprehensively structuralized and synthesized as a built environment for health theory. This study has its significance in providing a base to develop healthy built environment research further as it introduced a conceptual framework which explains spatial elements in the health functionality point of view.

  • A study was made on the feature extraction for non-metallic one deposits and their related geology using the Remote Sensing and Airborne Radiometric data. The area chosen is around the Haenam area, where dickite and Quarzite mines are distributed in. The geology of the area consists mainly of Cretaceous volcanics and PreCambrian metamorphic. The methods applied are study on the reflectance characteristics of minerals and rocks sampled in the study area, and the feature extraction extraction of histogram normalized images for Landsat TM and Airborne Radiometric data, and finally evaluation of applicability of some useful pattern recognition techniques for regional lithological mapping. As a result, reflectances of non-metallic minerals are much higher than rock samples in the area. However, low grade dickites are slightly higher than rock samples, probably due to their greyish colour and also their textural features which may scatter the reflectance and may be capable of capturing much hychoryl ions. The reflectances of rock samples may depend on the degree of whiteness of samples. The outcrops or mine dumps in the study area were most effectively extracted on the histogram normalized image of TM Band 1, 2 and 3, due to their high reflectivity. The Masking technique using the above bands may be the most effective and the natural colour composite may provide some success as well. The colour composite image of PCA may also be effective in extracting geological features, and airborne radiometric data may be useful to some degree as an complementary tool.

  • A complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) binary image sensor is proposed for low-power and low-noise operation. The proposed binary image sensor has the advantages of reduced power consumption and fixed pattern noise (FPN). A gate/body-tied (GBT) p-channel metal-oxide-semiconductor field-effect transistor (PMOSFET)-type photodetector is used as the proposed CMOS binary image sensor. The GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector has a floating gate that amplifies the photocurrent generated by incident light. Therefore, the sensitivity of the GBT PMOSFET-type photodetector is higher than that of other photodetectors. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor consists of a pixel array with $394(H){\times}250(V)$ pixels, scanners, bias circuits, and column parallel readout circuits for binary image processing. The proposed CMOS binary image sensor was analyzed by simulation. Using the dynamic comparator, a power consumption reduction of approximately 99.7% was achieved, and this performance was verified by the simulation by comparing the results with those of a two-stage comparator. Also, it was confirmed using simulation that the FPN of the proposed CMOS binary image sensor was successfully reduced by use of the double sampling process.
