Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) use is prevalent among individuals with cancer, especially breast cancer survivors. This study was conducted among 394 breast cancer survivors in selected regions of Peninsular Malaysia to identify the pattern and factors associated with CAM use. About 51% of the respondents reported CAM use as complementary treatment. Vitamins (47.2%), spiritual activities (33.2%) and other dietary supplements (30.7%) were the most commonly used CAM therapies. Common reasons for CAM use were to increase the body's ability to perform daily activities (70.9%), enhance immune function (58.3%) and improve emotional well-being (31.7%). Users obtained CAM information mainly from friends and family members (62.5%), physicians (25.0%) and mass media (13.9%). Ethnicity and years of education were significantly associated with CAM use. Although no adverse effects of CAM were reported, breast cancer survivors should discuss their CAM use with health professionals to prevent potential adverse effects of these therapies.

Recent studies on ankle-foot prostheses used for transtibial amputees have focused on the adaptation of the ankle angle of the prosthesis according to ground conditions. For adaptation to various ground conditions (e.g., incline, decline, and step conditions), ankle-foot prostheses should first recognize the ground conditions as well as the current human motion pattern. For this purpose, the ground reaction forces and orientation angle of the tibia provide fundamental information. The measurement of the orientation angle, however, creates a challenge in practice. Although various sensors, such as accelerometers and gyroscopes, can be utilized to measure the orientation angles of the prosthesis, none of these sensors can be solely used due to their intrinsic drawbacks. In this paper, a time-varying complementary filtering (TVCF) method is proposed to incorporate the measurements from an accelerometer and a gyroscope to obtain a precise orientation angle. The cut-off frequency of TVCF is adaptively determined according to the human gait phase detected by a fuzzy logic algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified through experiments.

Purpose: This study was done to investigate the application of complementary and alternative therapies (CAT) in patients with chronic liver disease. and to analyze the Influence of health locus of control (HLOC) on CAT. Method: Questionnaires on CAT and a multidimensional health locus of control (MHLOC) scale developed by Wallston and Wallston were completed by 141 patients. Result: Analysis showed that 44.7% of the patients had experience with CAT and 49.2% of the patients reported being willing to use CAT. Reliability scores for the scale were HLOC-I 0.7376, HLOC-P 0.6383, HLOC-C 0.7351. The mean scores for the HLOC were HLOC-I 24.86, HLOC-P 22.86, HLOC-C 16.00. There were no significant differences in mean scores for HLOC between the patients who had used CAT and those who had not. Eight response Patterns for HLOC were identified. Among them, 'yea sayer' was the largest group (27.0%). A significant difference was found in the 'yea sayer' pattern between the group who had used CAT and the group who had not. Conclusion: CAT relates to various cognitive factors such as HLOC. Further study is needed to examine the influence of HLOC on CAT and its response patterns.

Microarray-based DNA chips provide an architecture for multi-analyte sensing. In this paper, we report a new approach for DNA chip microarray fabrication. Multifunctional DNA chip microarrays were made by immobilizing many kinds if DNAs on transducers (particles). DNA chip microarrays were prepared by randomly distributing a mixture of the particles on a chip pattern containing thousands of micro meter-scale sites. The particles occupied different sites from array to array. Each particle cam be distinguished by a tag that is established on the particle. The particles were arranged on the chip pattern by the random fluidic self-assembly (RFSA) method, using hydrophobic interaction.
The study was to investigate the agreement rate between the statistical diagnosis of pattern identification by discriminant analysis and the clinical diagnosis of pattern identification by medical specialist in obese patients with BMI$\geqq$23. The agreement rate of deficiency of the spleen, phlegm-retention, deficiency of Yang, retention of undigested food, stagnation of liver Gi, and blood stagnation are 0.40, 0.33, 0.52, 0.76, 0.71, and 0.66, respectively and accuracy rate and prediction rate using linear discriminant function are 0.59 and 0.61, respectively. Therefore, the complementary management in CRF questionnaires and/or consultation from experts will improve the accuracy and prediction rate, which will be helpful for pattern identification of obesity by clinical experts.

The complementary relationship hypothesis for areal evapotranspirations was validated in the regional-scale area of multipurpose dam basins in Korea and the long-term water balances were indirectly identified. Annual actual evapotranspiration ($ET_A$) was assumed the difference between total annual precipitation and total annual inflow and the available moisture was assumed the total precipitation. The seasonally varying pan coefficient (kp) is estimated as the ratio of the $ET_{pan}$ and the evapotranspiration calculated by FAO Penman-Monteith equation ($ET_{PM}$). The complementary relationships using ground observation data of $ET_P$ and $ET_A$ in the multipurpose dam basins follow generally the typical pattern that $ET_P$ and $ET_A$ is complementary and converges to equivalent evapotranspiration ($ET_W$) under the extreme wet environment. However, $ET_A$ of Juam dam was estimated relatively greater than other basins and exceeds even $ET_P$ at certain range with high moisture availability, which can be understood as the results of possible over-estimation of precipitation or under-estimation of dam inflow. It is expected that the use of evapotranspiration complementary relationship for validating hydrological water balances will contribute to controlling uncertainties in estimating dam inflows during flood season in particular.
