Flame retardancy and mechanical properties of recycled polyolefinic plastics/inorganic filler composite systems were investigated by using several inorganic flame retardants such as magnesium hydroxide and slag powder generated electro arc furnace Compatibilizer user each maleic anhydride functionalized polyethylene (PE-g-MAH) and polypropylene(PP-g-MAH) or used mixture of these. The effect of polymeric compatibilizers on the properties of composites was studied by tensile and impact test, differential scanning calorimetry, in the changed fracture mechanism. The improved adhesion was particularly reflected in the mechanical properties. The flame retardancy of composites was examined by measuring limiting oxygen index(LOI, ASTM D2863), smoke density(ASTM D2843) and vertical burning test(UL94). Regarding the flame retardant effect, the EAF slag powder is behaving as synergists as they are only active in the presence of magnesium hydroxide.
The compatibility of poly(lactic acid)/poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactone) (PLA/PCL) blends as a function of blend composition was studied and triphenyl phosphite (TPP) was applied to PLA/PCL blends as a reactive compatibilizer. Especially the effect of compatibility on the crystallization behavior in both PLA/PCL blends and PLA/PCL blends with TPP was considered. PLA/PCL blends were immiscible based on thermal characteristics of PLA/PCL blends and the miscibility was depend upon the blend composition. The enhancement of compatibility was found in PLA/PCL blends with TPP depend upon its content. The rate of crystallization in PLA/PCL blend varied with blend composition. This was understood as the development of nucleation at the interface of PLA-PCL due to the immiscibility. TPP was acting as a compatibilizer as well as an agent for the acceleration of spherulite growth In PLA. As a result, the crystallization rate increased and the size of spherulite became larger than that of PLA/PCL blend without TPP.
The effects of poly($({\varepsilon}$-caprolactone) (PCL) on poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) and polycarbonate (PC) blends were studied. Blends of ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) with PCL as a compatibilizer were prepared by a twin screw extruder. From the glass transition temperature $(T_g)$ results of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, the $T_g$(PC) of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends decreased with increasing PCL content. From the results of the morphology of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL, the phase separation between the ABS and PC phases became less significant after adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. In addition, the morphological studies of the ABS/PC blends etched by NaOH indicated that the shape of the droplet was changed from regular round to irregular round by adding PCL in the ABS/PC blends. These results for the mechanical properties of the ABS/PC blends with PCL indicated that the tensile, flexural and impact strengths of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends peaked at a PCL content of 0.5 phr. From the results for the rheological properties of the ABS/PC (70/30) blends with PCL content, the storage modulus, loss modulus and complex viscosity increased at PCL content up to 5 phr. From the above results of the $T_g$, mechanical properties, morphology and complex viscosity of the ABS/PC blends with PCL, it was concluded that the compatibility was increased with PCL addition in the ABS/PC (70/30, wt%) blends and that the optimum concentration of PCL as a compatibilizer is 0.5 phr.
RPP(maleic-anhydride grafted PP)and OPS(oxazoline grafted PS) do not react to each other, and thus show immiscibility. In this study, Nylons was added to RPP/OPS blend systems, as a reactive compatibilizer for enhancing the miscibility of the blends. When Nylon6 was added to the blends of RPP and OPS, RPP/Nylon6/OPS was produced. The effects of the molar ratio of Nylon6 on the RPP-Nylon6-OPS reaction were studied. Torque test and FT-IR analysis have been carried out to investigate the reaction of RPP/Nylon6/OPS system. The reaction torgue ratio and reaction efficiency show the maximum values at 1 : 0.66 : 1 and 1 : 1 : 1 (in moles) for RPP/Nylon6/OPS. In the RPP/Nylon6/OPS blends, their mechanical properties were changed with the molar ratio of Nylon6 and showed the highest value at molar ratio of 1.5. Physical properties and compatibility of RPP/Nylon6/OPS were compared with those of PP/Nylon6/OPS. Consequently, RPP/Nylon6/OPS plays a proper role as a reactive compatibilizer to the PP/PS blend system.
The effects of compatibilizers on the mechanical and rheological properties of PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends have been studied. The thermoplastic polyolefin (TPO) consists of PP (80 wt%), EPDM (15 wt%) and Talc (5 wt%). Maleic anhydride grafted polypropylene (PP-g-MAH) and maleic anhydride grafted styrene-(ethylene-co-butene)-styrene copolymer (SEBS-g-MAH) were used as compatibilizers. In mechanical properties of PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends, tensile strength was increased when PP-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer, and impact strength was increased when SEBS-g-MAH was used as a compatibilizer. From the results of SEM morphology of PP/PCL blend, PCL droplet size was decreased by the addition of PP-g-MAH. From the results of rheological property, complex viscosity of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends did not change appreciably when the compatibilizers were added. From the results of mechanical, morphological and rheological properties of the blends, PP-g-MAH acted as a compatibilizer to increase the tensile strength of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends. While SEBS-g-MAH acted as a impact modifier to increase the impact strength of the PP/PCL and TPO/PCL blends.
Eco-friendly materials or bio-composites were made with poly(lactic acid) (PLA) as matrix polymer and kenaf fibers as filler. Also, acetylated kenaf fibers and compatibilizer were adopted in order to improve the interfacial adhesion between fiber and polymer. In this study, the effect of chemical modification and compatibilizer on the mechanical-viscoelastic and morphology properties of the bio-composites was discussed. The hydrophobic fibers by acetylation were known to show better interfacial bonding with the matrix polymer and resulted in improved performance and morphology. Viscoelastic property and glass transition temperature, however, were not nearly enhanced.
This study suggested antistatic material which can increase anti-static properties and mechanical strength by mixing polystyrene for conveying electronic stuffs with metal salt and ester compound as a anti-static agent. We studied about mechanical, thermal and electrical characteristics by changing the contents of MAH of poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride), compatibilizer. As the result of measuring residue space charge of the blends of HIPS(75)/TPU(25)/poly(styrene-co-maleic anhydride)(MAH weight ratio : 25, 32, 43.5 wt%), we could find small residue charge in the blend which MAH(25 wt%) was added and it showed the highest values in tensile strength. Additionally we found out the material to which compatibilizer was added kept better anti-static properties than one to which compatibilizer was not added. In the event we could confirm that the adding of PS-co-MAH enables two polymers were mixed well when HIPS/TPU was blended and anti-static agent made easier dissipative in the blend.
Inorganic shell powder waste was added to recycled polypropylene(COPP), and its effect on the mechanical properties and flammability was investigated. Compatibilizer(Polytail H) was added to improve mechanical properties of COPP/shell composites. Also three different flame retardants($Al_2O_3$, DBDPO, $Sb_2O_3$) were added to improve flammability. Experimental results indicated that addition of compatibilizer resulted in an improved mechanical properties, and especially impact strength approached that of 100 wt% COPP. Addition of flame retardant did not result in decreased mechanical properties. UL-94 flammability test indicated that COPP/shell composite did not show good flame retardancy, however, in the case of COPP/shell composites containing flame retardant showed good flammability. flammability was found $Sb_2O_3>Al_2O_3>DBDPO$ in this order. Finally, UL-94 V-0 grade was found in COPP/shell composite with $Al_2O_3$, compatibilizer, and 40 wt% shell, and COPP/shell composites with $Sb_2O_3$.

This study focused on the characterization of recycle PE/PET/TPE blend with compatibilizers. The heat resistance and impact strength of a weak point on PET/HDPE blend has been improved. TPE added polyester-based recycle heat-resistant properties to $150^{\circ}C$ showed more than $50^{\circ}C$ higher than HDPE added. Elastomer applied is a significant increase in the impact strength, and then it is possible to apply for safety materials in industries requiring heat-resistance and elasticity. Also using PET blend compatibilizer improves the strength of the polyolefin resin. The mechanical properties of recycle HDPE and PET blend has been greatly improved, and the reduction in the size of the dispersed phase by the addition of compatibilizers on morphology characteristics were observed uniformity becomes.
