Maleimidopropyltriethoxysilane grafted natural rubber (MISNR) was prepared by reaction of maleic anhydride grafted natural rubber and 3-aminopropyl triethoxysilane. MISNR was used as the compatibilizer of natural rubber/silica composites. The composites were prepared by two-step mixing procedures. The final mixtures were cured with optimum cure condition, which was established by a rheometer. Effects of the amounts of compatibilizer in the composites on the cure characteristics, morphology, thermal stability, and physical and mechanical behaviors were investigated. The composites having MISNR had shown cure characteristics and physical and mechanical properties superior to those without MISNR. Silica particles in the former appeared to be more uniform and reduced in size compared with the latter. The effects of the types of silica were also evaluated.
Biocomposites from polypropylene (PP) and corn cob (CC) were investigated. The effect of corn cob content and maleic anhydride polypropylene (MAPP) as compatibilizer were studied. Results showed that addition of corn cob (CC) in PP have decreased the tensile strength and elongation at break, whereas modulus of elasticity of biocomposites increased. The biocomposites with the MAPP as compatibilizer exhibited higher tensile strength and modulus of elasticity compared biocomposites without MAPP. The morphology study of biocomposites indicates that enhanced the interfacial interaction and adhesion between filler and matrix with the presence of MAPP.

Blends of poly(l-lactide) (PLA) and low density polyethylene (LDPE) were prepared by melt mixing in order to improve the brittleness of PLA. A reactive compatibilizer with glycidyl methacrylate (GMA), PE-GMA, was required as a compatibilizer due to the immiscibility between PLA and LDPE. It contributes to reduce the domain size of dispersed phase and enhance the tensile properties of PLA/LDPE blends, especially for PLA matrix blends. A reaction product between PLA and PE-GMA, which was formed during melt-mixing and considered to act as a reactive compatibilizer, was characterized using $ ^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy.

Polypropylene (PP)/montmorillonite (MMT) nanocomposites were prepared by melt mixing methods. MMT modified by dimethyl hydrogenated tallow 2-ethylhexyl ammonium (Cloisite 15A) was used. Polyolefine oligomer with telechelic OH groups was used as a compatibilizer. The degree of dispersion of MMT in the nanocomposites was measured by X-ray diffractometer and transmission electron microscope (TEM) images. MMT was well exfoliated when the contents of compatibilizer was 25 phr. The thermal stability that observed by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) increased with the contents of MMT increased up to 5 phr. The complex viscosities and storage moduli of PP nanocomposites enhanced as the contents of compatibilizer decreased and those of MMT increased.
We investigated effects of a compatibilizer on the rheological properties during mixing and thermal properties of polypropylene (PP)-natural fiber composites. Two types of natural fibers (cotton fiber and wood fiber) were compared. maleic anhydride grafted PP was used for a compatibilizer. On increasing the amounts of the compatibilizer, the torque values of composites were increased, regardless of the kind of fibers. X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed a slight increase in the degree of crystallinity with adding the compaibilizing agent, while the effects of the kind of fibers were marginal. It may be considered, however, the cotton fiber exhibits better interaction with PP-g-MAH than the natural fiber based on the rheographs, DSC, and XRD results.
In the present work, low density polyethylene (LDPE)/aliphatic polyester (APES)/organoclay ternary nanocomposites were prepared. In particular, the effect of a compatibilizer, polyethylene-graft-maleic anhydride (PE-g-MAH), on the morphology and properties of the ternary nanocomposites was investigated. LDPE/APES/organoclay nanocomposites were prepared through melt intercalation method using two different kinds of organoclay. The dispersibility of silicate clays in the nanocomposites was investigated by X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy. The ternary nanocomposites showed higher tensile properties than the LDPE/APES blend did. The dispersibility and properties of nanocomposites containing Cloisite 30B were better than those of the nanocomposites containing Cloisite 20A. Unlike Cloisite 20A, hydroxyl groups in the intercalants in Cloisite 30B interlayer underwent a certain polar interaction with the carboxyl group of APES, favoring the intercalation of APES chains and the formation of LDPE/APES/Closite 30B nanocomposites. However, the introduction of the polar hydroxyl groups also enhanced the interaction with the silicate surface at the same time, thereby rendering somewhat difficult the replacement of the surface contacts by LDPE chains, and impeding the extensive intercalation and further exfoliation of Cloisite 30B in the LDPE/APES matrix. The compatibilizer enhanced the intercalation of the polymer chain inside the clay gallery and thus improved the mechanical properties of the ternary nanocomposites. Rheological measurements of the nanocomposites via frequency sweep experiment indicated a certain interaction between the clay platelet and the polymer molecules in the melted state.
The effects of a compatibilizer on polypropylene (PP)/poly(acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene) (ABS) blends were studied. Blends of the PP/ABS, with PP-g-SAN copolymer as a compatibilizer, were prepared using a twin screw extruder. The flexural and impact strength of the PP/ABS blends with the PP-g-SAN copolymer increased significantly with PP-rich compositions on the addition of the PP-g-SAN copolymer at 3 phr. The increase in the mechanical properties of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN blend may have been due to the toughening effects of the ABS in the PP-rich compositions. In the morphology study of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN (80/20) blend with the PP-g-SAN copolymer, the minimum droplet size, $5.1{\mu}m$, was observed with the addition on phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer. The complex viscosity of the PP/ABS/PP-g-SAN (80/20) blends increased with the addition of3 phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer. From the above mechanical properties, morphology and complex viscosity results for the PP/ABS blends, it is suggested that the compatibility is more increased with the PP-rich composition (PP:ABS=80/20 wt%) of the PP/ABS blend on the addition of 3 phr of the PP-g-SAN copolymer.
The polymer blends of waste poly(vinyl chloride) (RPVC) and waste polyethylene (RPE) were prepared by melt mixing. Various ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymers (EVA) and ethylene-methacrylic acid Na salt copolymer (ionomer) were used as compatibilizer. Their morphologies and mechanical properties were evaluated as a funtion of mixing sequence and time. EVA with high vinyl acetate contents showed a rapid increment of tensile properties when small amount was added. Tensile properties of the blends were gradually increased with the addition of ionomer. Morphologies of RPVC/RPE blends were analyzed by scanning electron microscopy. FT-IR data showed that EVA was a good compatibilizer in RPVC/RPE blend compared to ionomer. Mechanical properties of the blends were highly enhanced when RPVC and compatibilizer were mixed and first RPE was added later.

In this study, we used polypropylene grafted with itaconic acid (PP-g-IA) as a compatibilizer to prevent phase separation phenomenon which occurs upon blending polypropylene (PP) and ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH). A compatibilizer was prepared using graft copolymerization of itaconic acid (IA) onto PP where input ratio of IA was 1, 2, 5, and 10 wt.%. To confirm the structure of PP-g-IA and the graft ratio of IA onto PP, we used $^1H$ NMR and FT-IR. We tested the compatibilizer which has highest graft ratio of 1% in immiscible PP/EVOH blends. The morphologies of PP/PP-g-IA/EVOH blends were analyzed by SEM. Thermal and mechanical properties of the blends were analyzed by DSC and UTM. PP-g-IA enhanced the interfacial adhesion of PP and EVOH copolymer.
The need for biodegradable plastic continues to increase, improvement of physical properties is necessary for actual use in the market. In this study, composite film was produced by adding peroxide additives to bioplastic according to concentration to investigate changes in the melt index, elongation, morphology, and TGA of the composite film. The addition of peroxide compatibilizer showed superior elongation of film and TGA compared to those of control. The added amount of compatibilizer affected the extrusion process, and it was revealed that adding an appropriate amount of peroxidizer is important. Analysis of the composite film's morphology revealed a heterogeneous dispersion sequence due to different rates of crystallization depending on the resin, and surface physical properties were best in the group added with 4% peroxide. The results above showed that the test group added with 4% peroxide compatibilizer was superior in the production of composite biodegradable film.
