Linearized analysis of the internal pressures for a two-compartment building with leakage

  • The non-linear equations governing wind-induced internal pressures for a two-compartment building with background leakage are linearized based on some reasonable assumptions. The explicit admittance functions for both building compartments are derived, and the equivalent damping coefficients of the coupling internal pressure system are iteratively obtained. The RMS values of the internal pressure coefficients calculated from the non-linear equations and linearized equations are compared. Results indicate that the linearized equations generally have good calculation precision when the porosity ratio is less than 20%. Parameters are analyzed on the explicit admittance functions. Results show that the peaks of the internal pressure in the compartment without an external opening (Compartment 2) are higher than that in the compartment with an external opening (Compartment 1) at lower Helmholtz frequency. By contrast, the resonance peak of the internal pressure in compartment 2 is lower than that in compartment 1 at higher Helmholtz frequencies.

  • Recently, compartment design of a naval ship for efficiently utilizing the limited spaces has become more important. However, the compartment design of the naval ship was not optimized like that of a commercial ship because of a number of design requirements. Thus, the task is being manually performed using the data of parent ships and designers' experiences. To improve this procedure, an optimal compartment design system, which can generate better compartment design result with the satisfaction of various design requirements, is developed in this study. Finally, to evaluate of the applicability of the developed system, it is applied to the compartment design of a 9,000ton missile destroyer(DDG). The result shows that the developed system can yield better result than original design.

Similarity of energy balance in mechanically ventilated compartment fires: An insight into the conditions for reduced-scale fire experiments

  • When evaluating energy balance and temperature in reduced-scale fire experiments, which are conducted as an alternative to full-scale fire experiments, it is important to consider the similarity in the scale among these experiments. In this paper, a method considering the similarity of energy balance is proposed for setting the conditions for reduced-scale experiments of mechanically ventilated compartment fires. A small-scale fire experiment consisting of various cases with different compartment geometries (aspect ratios between 0.2 and 4.7) and heights of vents and fire sources was conducted under mechanical ventilation, and the energy balance in the quasi-steady state was evaluated. The results indicate the following: (1) although the compartment geometry varies the energy balance in a mechanically ventilated compartment, the variation in the energy balance can be evaluated irrespective of the compartment size and geometry by considering scaling factor F (∝heffAwRT, where heff is the effective heat transfer coefficient, Aw is the total wall area, and RT is the ratio of the spatial mean gas temperature to the exhaust temperature); (2) the value of RT, which is a part of F, reflects the effects of the compartment geometry and corresponds to the distributions of the gas temperature and wall heat loss.

  • Bosworth fracture-dislocation of ankle is very rare, occurred by eversion and external rotation force. It is known as irreducible fracture by closed method. Also, compartment syndrome after ankle fracture are exceedingly rare. There are only a few reported cases of compartment syndrome after ankle fracture and compartment syndrome are involved commonly deep posterior compartment. We present a case in which a patient had a Bosworth fracturedislocation of the ankle underwent open reduction with internal fixation and subsequently occurred an anterior compartment syndrome of the leg.

Simulating the Response of a 10-Storey Steel-Framed Building under Spreading Multi-Compartment Fires

  • This paper presents a numerical investigation on the structural response of a multi-story building subjected to spreading multi-compartment fires. A recently proposed simple fire model has been used to simulate two spreading multi-compartment fire scenarios in a 10-story steel-framed office building. By assuming simple temperature rising and distribution profiles in the fire exposed structural components (steel beams, steel column and concrete slabs), finite element simulations using a three-dimensional structural model has been carried out to study the failure behavior of the whole structure in two multi-compartment fire conditions and also in a standard fire condition. The structure survived the standard fire but failed in the multi-compartment fire. Whilst more accurate fire models and heat transfer models are needed to better predict the behaviors of structures in realistic fires, the current study based on very simple models has demonstrated the importance and necessity of considering spreadingmulti-compartment fires in fire resistance design of multi-story buildings.

Recurrent Dorsal Compartment Syndrome of the Upper Arm After Blunt Trauma

  • Compartment syndrome is not uncommon in the forearm or lower extremity, but it is relatively rare in the upper arm. This rarity might delay the diagnosis, especially in the unconscious or intoxicated patient. Therefore, a high index of suspicion is needed to make an accurate, early diagnosis. Although excessive muscle strain leading to localized compartment syndrome is seldom encountered in the upper arm, three cases of compartment syndrome in the upper arm after blunt injury have been reported. Interestingly, there were no bony injuries in any of these patients. However, there are only two reports of isolated dorsal compartment syndrome after blunt trauma. The present report presents the case of a patient who had blunt trauma to the upper arm that resulted in the development of compartment syndrome in the isolated dorsal compartment of the upper arm.

Fasciotomy in compartment syndrome from snakebite

  • Background Local symptoms and signs of snake envenomation mimic the clinical features of compartment syndrome. It is important to measure the intracompartmental pressure to diagnose compartment syndrome. In this study, we present our experiences of confirming compartment syndrome and performing fasciotomy in snakebite patients based on high intracompartmental pressure findings. Methods The medical records of patients who visited the trauma center of Wonju Severance Christian Hospital from January 2010 to December 2015 for the management of venomous snakebite were retrospectively reviewed. Starting in 2014, fasciotomy was performed in patients with an intracompartmental pressure of more than 40 mmHg in addition to the clinical symptoms of compartment syndrome. Results A total of 158 patients with snakebite came to the hospital within 48 hours for treatment. Most patients (110 patients) were bitten at the upper extremities (69.6%). Since 2014, 33 out of 59 patients were suspected to have compartment syndrome, and their intracompartmental pressures were measured. Seventeen of those patients had a high intracompartmental pressure (average, 49.6 mmHg; range, 37-88 mmHg), and fasciotomy was performed. Conclusions In this study, as many as 10.8% of all cases were in need of fasciotomy when compartment syndrome was diagnosed by measuring the intracompartmental pressure. Previously, it was reported that fasciotomy was not required in many cases of compartment syndrome originating from snakebite. However, some patients may develop very severe compartment syndrome, requiring fasciotomy.

진동-음향 상반성을 이용한 차실-트렁크 연성계의 소음평가 (Noise Estimation in a Passenger Compartment and Trunk Coupled System by Using the Vibro-Acoustic Reciprocity)

  • This paper describes the correlation between the interior noise and the trunk wall vibration. Using the vibro-acoustic reciprocity, effect of the trunk wall vibration on the compartment noise is investigated on a medium size car. In the low frequency range, vehicle interior noise is dominated by several acoustic modes of the passenger compartment and the vibration modes of the surrounding shell parts. Especially, vibration of the trunk wall radiates sound and it is transferred through holes on the package tray into the passenger compartment. This paper experimentally reveals that sound can be well produced at some particular vibration modes of the trunk lid and it strongly influences the compartment noise through package tray holes. Contributions of the trunk walls to the interior noise are estimated by measuring the acoustic-structural transfer function, based on the vibro-acoustical reciprocity theorem.

  • Acoustic modal characteristics are investigated on the passenger compartment and trunk coupled system. One-dimensional theoretical model is proposed and the validity of the model is verified by experiment on a simplified compartment model. The theoretical model identifies the occurrence of a new low frequency compartment mode, which does not exist in the uncoupled passenger compartment. The effect of the hole size on the compartment modes is analytically and experimentally examined.

  • According to building law, there are only regulations on the fire prevention compartments that can perform the function of partial smoke compartment, but the building law management of the smoke compartment for effective smoke diffusion prevention and control is not possible. The lack of control on the smoke compartment such as leakage rate on the penetrating part, and the lack of leakage rate in the design of smoke control of fire safety law resulted in the absence of fundamental safety technology. Therefore, this study seeks to find solutions to domestic problems after reviewing relevant domestic laws and regulations.
