  • This study compares the members of children's reading and culture movement organization versus general public and their children with the aim of understanding how parents' reading activities affect children's reading activities. The study surveyed 477 elementary school students and 483 parents from five special metropolitan cities regarding their reading behaviour. Reading behavior was investigated in terms of reading frequency, book selection information source, reading awareness, and preferred books, and it was confirmed that there was a difference between members of children's reading and culture movement organization and children of the general public. Members of children's reading and culture movement organization and their children showed superior reading habits in terms of both quantity and quality than non-members and their children, and the book selection information service was used. In terms of perception regarding reading, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children found more "joy" in reading than "help in learning" as compared to the general public and their children. In terms of reading preference, children's reading and culture movement organization members and their children intensively preferred Korean creative fairy tales and picture books while the general public and their children preferred Korean creative fairy tales, picture books, and educational comics. In order to create a healthier reading culture and environment for the long term, the development of more active reading participation methods for the general public is required.

  • The purpose of this study is to present the theoretical basis and quantified objective standards for the establishment of collection management policy. The study results are summarized as follows. Most of the study books were in the form of periodicals as a steady seller. Most of the steady sellers were textbooks which published periodically. As a modern novel, a steady seller was able to confirm the phenomenon of dependence on a specific author. Bestsellers were investigated to be influenced by publishers and authors. Books of publishers that publish comics and children's textbooks had a significant correlation with the selection of bestsellers. The average number of recommended books borrowed per recommended book was 14,871. The average number of loans per book selected as a bestseller was 53,531. Based on the loan data, about 80-82% of all top-tier loans were covered by 90%, and about 27-29% of all top-ranked loans were covered by 50%. This shows that the Pareto Principle can be firmly applied to public library lending patterns. Loans in the field of literature accounted for 50.6% of the total loans. Among literature, Korean literature accounted for 51.3% of the total. The natural sciences were generating more loans with a relatively small pool of literature compared to other subject fields.

  • Kim, Yong-Hwan is a one of the South Korean major cartoonists between 1940s and 1960s. Kim, Yong-Hwan drew a variety of genres from children's cartoon to current-affair cartoon. Furthermore, Kim, Yong-Hwan took the lead in publishing cartoon magazine and newspaper after the Independence, and has been highly appreciated as a pioneer of Korean cartoon. Kim, Yong-Hwan created many works in the fields of illustrations, Oriental painting, history painting, caricature, etc. After going study for painting to Japan, Kim, Yong-Hwan made his debut as an illustrator called Kita Koji in Japan. However, not much is known about his works in Japan, only there is a simple data about his Japan period and some pieces of illustration during Japan years. In this paper, I examined in detail about Kim, Yong-Hwan's work activity in Japan which has been little known in Korea for a long time. I studied on illustrations in magazines and books which he drew in the name of Kita Koji, on the basis of the data of the National Diet Library of Japan. I could know that Kim, Yong-Hwan worked actively in a diversity of publishers and magazines. In addition, I could realize that many magazines in which Kim, Yong-Hwan drew illustrations were very popular ones. This demonstrates that Kim, Yong-Hwan was much recognized in Japan for his talent. However, a large number of Kim, Yong-Hwan's illustrations were published from late 1930s to mid-1940s. This period was the years that Japan concentrated all her energy for World War II. All the publishing were severely censored during this period. A majority of publishing in this period supported Japanese militarism, and glorified Japan's war policy. Kim, Yong-Hwan's illustrations were no exception, too. It was really sorry about his activity during his Japan period. This essay means a lot to a field of cartoon studies in terms of a collection of materials during Kim, Yong-Hwan's Japan period. Besides, I think that henceforth, this paper can contribute to a follow-up study on Kim, Yong-Hwan' work and his broad background.
