  • Purpose: Thermal sensation or thermal comfort was randomly used in many studies which focused on combined effects of thermal and acoustic environments on human perception. However, thermal sensation and thermal comfort are not synonyms. Thermal comfort is more complex human perception on thermal environment than thermal sensation. This study aims to investigate effects of noise on thermal sensation and thermal comfort separately, and also to investigate effects of temperature on acoustic sensation and comfort. Method: Combined thermal and acoustic configurations were simulated in an indoor environmental chamber. Twenty four participants were exposed to two types of noise (fan and babble) with two noise levels (45 dBA and 60 dBA) for an hour in each thermal condition of PMV-1.53, 0.03, 1.53, 1.83, respectively. Temperature sensation, temperature preference, thermal comfort, noisiness, loudness, annoyance, acoustic comfort, indoor environmental comfort were evaluated in each combined environmental condition. Result: Noise did not affected thermal sensation, but thermal comfort significantly. Temperature had an effect on acoustic comfort significantly, but no effect on noisiness and loudness in overall data analysis. More explicit interactions between thermal condition and noise perception showed only with the noise level of 60 dBA. Impacts of both thermal comfort and acoustic comfort on the indoor environmental comfort were analyzed. In adverse thermal environments, thermal comfort had more impact than acoustic comfort on indoor environmental comfort, and in neutral thermal environments, acoustic comfort had more important than thermal comfort.

  • Hot and humid weather in summer generally brings about discomfort. Experiments on which relative humidity makes effects on the comfort sensation were performed to the young and the aged using sensation vote. From July to October 1996, seven college students and eleven aged people were exposed for 2 hours under six different conditions in the Pukyong National University test chamber so as to determine the effects of relative humidity on thermal and comfort sensations. Subjects were wearing same clothes, and the mean clo value was 0.5. The mean radiant temperature was equal to the air temperature and air velocity in the occupied zone around 0.lm/s. In the experiments, it was found that discomfort could be largely reduced when the humidity is controlled to low values in the settled high temperature.

  • The purpose of this study is to develop of portable thermal comfort measurement tool for elderly. Using prediction expression of thermal comfort for elderly which derived at previous study, a field studies were conducted. The objects of this survey are old persons over 60 years old and total 296 (male:111 persons, female:145 persons) persons were measured. The actual thermal sensation was compared with predicted thermal sensation calculated with PMV model, and the results shows that there were no correlation between them. Also, appling cheek temperature and hand temperature were useful to predict thermal sensation of elderly people. Especially, predicted thermal sensation using cheek temperature were closely connected with actual thermal sensation of elderly and presented most similar trend to actual thermal sensation.

  • This study aims at investigating the benefit of actively controlling humidity to improve thermal comfort and energy efficiency in climate zones other than hot-dry. For this research purpose, three thermal control strategies, which adopted different initiative degrees in humidity control, were developed - i) temperature controls, ii) temperature and humidity controls, and iii) thermal sensation controls. Performance of the developed strategies were experimentally tested in a full scale mock up of an office environment. The study revealed that air temperature was better controlled in the occupied zone under the first two strategies than the thermal sensation based strategy. On the other hand, the thermal sensation-based strategy maintained thermal sensation levels more comfortably. In addition, energy consumption was significantly reduced when humidity was actively controlled for thermal comfort. The thermal sensation-based control strategy consumed significantly less electricity than the first two strategies. From these findings, this study indicated that adoption of an active humidity control system based on thermal sensation can provide increased thermal comfort as well as energy savings for summer seasons in climatic zones other than hot-dry.

  • In recently, Is inhabiting more than 70% indoors during a day in case of company employee and ordinary people which is looking at usual business. Therefore Thermal comfort of human body about indoor temperature and air flow acting very heftily. When intestine temperature is fallen for external low temperature and air flow in winter in case enter into heated room feel comfort by effect of temperature and feel comfort or discomfort by room heating condition gradually. Therefore it is important that grasp thermal comfort about temperature and air flow in heating to keep continuous comfort in indoor dwelling. Temperature and thermal comfort factor of emotion & sensitivity image exert fair effect since heating middle although thermal comfort change greatly effect on sensation about temperature at actuality heating early. Need much study yet in vantage point of emotion & sensitivity although much study were held about thermal and comfort sensibility and when heat in existing research until now. Therefore this study is targeting that evaluate thermal comfort through introduction of estimation method by emotion & sensibility image real and synthetic sensibility about thermal environment that is becoming winter heating.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine physical characteristics, and subjective sensation toward sports socks, varing types of fiber content and fabric structure. Also we tried to develop regression models from variables. Results of this study are as follows. 1. Cotton 100% socks had a highest absorbency and wickability among six different socks. The result of ANOVA shows that fiber content influenced on the wet sensation only prior to exercise. 2. Terry socks had a higher drop absorbency, stretch properties and thermal resistances than plain jersey socks. But there was no significant difference in overall comfort sensation. 3. We developed regression models to predict overall comfort sensation from thermal sensation and wet sensation. Also we can predict thermal sensation from the thickness of socks in the sole area, and we can predict wet sensation from moisture permeability

  • Thermal neutrality is not enough to achieve thermal comfort. The temperature level can be the optimal, and still people may complain. This situation is often explained by the problem of local discomfort. Local discomfort can be caused by radiant asymmetry, local air velocities, too warm and too cold floor temperature and vertical temperature difference. This temperature difference may generate thermal discomfort due to different thermal sensation in different body parts. Therefore, thermal comfort can not be correctly evaluated without considering these differences. This study investigates thermal discomfort sensations of different body parts and its effect on overall thermal sensation and comfort in air-heating room. Experimental results of evaluating thermal discomfort at different body parts in an air-heating room showed that thermal sensation on the shoulder was significantly related to the overall thermal sensation and discomfort. Although it is known that cool-head, warm-foot condition is good for comfort living, cool temperature around the head generated discomfort.

  • This study evaluated the effect of functional characteristics of the fabric for Bikram yoga clothing and fit measured in clothing pressure on the wearer's physiological response and perceptive sensation before and after exercise in hot conditions and during a resting period in standard conditions. The test garment consisted of two tops (T1, T2) and two pants (P1, P2) each with different functional characteristics of fabric. Using various combinations of the test garments, assessment of the thermal sensation and comfort was performed before/after yoga and after resting. This study revealed that thermal sensation and wearing comfort significantly changed based on the functionality of the fabric of top garment before the exercise period. In addition, the results showed that based on clothing pressure, the feeling of comfort was different between before yoga and after resting. The appropriate choice of fabric material was important when constructing Bikram yoga clothing worn in hot conditions; however, level of clothing pressure was also found to be an essential design factor for comfort during rest after exercise.

  • The influences of luminous environment on visual responses and fatigue sensation in art galleries were examined in this study. Field measurements and survey were performed in three galleries under various illuminance and luminous conditions. Result implies that vertical illuminance on art paintings needed to be somewhere between 200 lx and 300 lx to avoid visual discomfort. The vertical illuminance difference between consecutive paintings should not exceed 100 lx to keep visually comfortable environment. Visual comfort sensations were related to glare, visual stimulus, reflection from paintings, illuminance variation, and the sensation that subjects can clearly see the paintings. The sensation of fatigue was significantly influenced by the changes of luminous element that caused visual stimulus and discomfort. The sensation of eye fatigue among physical fatigue was primarily influenced by the glare, visual stimulus and comfort. The psychological fatigue was also influenced by eye fatigue, visual comfort, brightness and satisfaction with color of light.
