  • An experimental investigation was conducted to investigate the effects of the equivalence ratio and air mass flux on the combustion efficiency in a solid fuel ramjet used fuel grains which were highly loaded with boron carbide. Combustion efficiency increased with increasing equivalence ratio (grain length), and decreasing air mass flux. Higher inlet air temperature produced higher combustion efficiencies, apparently the result of enhanced combustion of the larger boron particles those bum in a diffusion controlled regime. Short grains which considered primarily of the recirculation region produced larger particles and lower combustion efficiencies. The result of the normalized combustion efficiency increased with inlet air temperature, is coincident with the result of the Brayton cycle thermal and the total efficiency relating to the heat input.

  • Flame characteristics and combustion stability of a swirl coaxial injector are studied experimentally. Characteristics of flame and combustion instability are analyzed with the parameter of MFR (momentum flux ratio) using hexane instead of kerosene. Flame patterns of blue and yellow are changed with variable MFR. Combustion instabilities are measured and analyzed by adopting a model chamber. Combustion instability mapping is made by evaluating damping factor at the 2 L (second longitudinal) mode with variable MFR in 63 cases for operating condition.

  • This work is to investigate the surface heat flux and combustion characteristics of premixed propane mixture in a constant volume chamber. The experiment of heat flux and combustion characteristics of premixed propane mixture are performed with various equivalence ratio and initial pressure conditions. Based on the experimental results, it is found that the maximum instantaneous temperature is increased with the increase of initial pressure in the chamber. There are significant differences in the burning velocity of premixed propane mixture at different measuring points in the constant volume combustion chamber. A]so, the trends of temperature difference at each measuring points are similar to the burning velocity in the combustion chamber. It is concluded that the total heat loss during the combustion period is affected by the equivalence ratio and the initial condition of fuel-air mixture.

  • Lean combustion performance of natural gas and hydrogen was compared in a spark-ignition engine. The lean combustion engine operation with natural gas was limited due to combustion instability at an excess air ratio (EAR) above 1.8. The total hydrocarbon (THC) emissions increased significantly with increasing EAR. The nitrogen oxides (NOX) emissions were also high due to the limitation of increasing EAR. The lean combustion engine operation with hydrogen showed superior combustion stability as well as low THC and NOX emissions, even at high EARs. However, boosting technology was required to reach the high EARs.

  • The effect of reentrant type bowl geometry on combustion characteristics was investigated in a D.I. diesel engine. The main factor was the aspect ratio (Bowl Diameter / Bowl Depth) of bowl of combustion chamber, and the cylinder pressure, engine performance and emissions of the engine using the 4 kinds of the combustion chamber were meadured. Also, the combustion characteristics compared of the experimented and the calculated values which is used by the Hiroyasu's combustion model. The results are as follows; The effect of $d_c/H$ on ignition delay period are small. The smoke is corerelated to the heat release of the premixed and the diffusion combustion, i.g, the smoke decreased by decreasing the premixed combustion or increasing the diffusion combustion on cumulative heat release. The premixed combustion process has more effect than the diffusion combustion on smoke. The formal tendency of $d_c/H$ on engine performance has not appear.

  • The intake swirl motion, as one of dominant effects for an engine combustion. is very effective for turbulence enhancement during the compression process in the cylinder of 2-valve engine. Because the combustion flame speed is determined by the turbulence that is mainly generated from the mean flow of the charge air motion in intake port system. This paper describes the experimental results of swirl flow and combustion characteristics by using the oil spot method and back-scattering Laser Doppler velocimeter (LDV) in 2-valve single cylinder transparent LPG engine using the liquid phase LPG injection. For this. various intake port configurations were developed by using the flow box system and swirl ratios for different intake port configurations were determined by impulse swirl meter in a steady flow rig test. And the effects of intake swirl ratio on combustion characteristics in an LPG engine were analyzed with some analysis parameters that is swirl ratio. mean flow coefficient, swirl mean velocity fuel conversion efficiency. combustion duration and cyclic variations of indicated mean effective pressure(IMEP). As these research results, we found that the intake port configuration with swirl ratio of 2.0 that has a reasonable lean combustion stability is very suitable to an $11{\ell}$ heavy-duty LPG engine with liquid phase fuel injection system. It also has a better mean flow coefficient of 0.34 to develope a stable flame kernel and to produce high performance. This research expects to clarify major factor that effects on the design of intake port efficiently with the optimized swirl ratio for the heavy duty LPG engine.

  • A study for the flame stability and the combustion characteristics of coaxial diffusion flame was conducted. The fuel employed was natural gas. The experimental variables were rim thickness of fuel tube, blockage ratio of the outer diameter of fuel tube to the inner diameter of air tube, and momentum ratio of fuel to air. It was consequently found that the stability in the neighborhood of the fuel rim depended on the rim thickness, especially in the case of above 3 mm, and that the stable region of the flame extended remarkably due to the formation of recirculation zone above rim. The effect of the blockage ratio on the flame stability was found to be minor in the case of above 3 mm of rim thickness. Between the momentum ratio 2 and 3, the stable flame zone was widely established as well good combustion. With increasing the fuel-air momentum ratio, axial velocity, turbulence intensity, and Reynolds stress increased.

  • The performance of oxygen combustion with $CO_2$ feeding was investigated in a pyrex tube furnace. The inverse type multi-hole burner was used for improving mixing and wide operating range. It introduced oxygen, fuel, and oxygen, respectively, from center tube to outer tubes. Oxygen combustion characteristics with excess oxygen ratio, oxygen feeding ratio, and $CO_2$ feeding flow rate were studied to optimize the operating condition and to apply the oxygen combustion with recirculation of flue gas to a real furnace. This paper presents results on the effect of $CO_2$ feeding flow rate on the structure of the flames and concentrations of NO and CO emissions. The visible flame length was shortest due to well mixing between fuel and oxygen when the oxygen feeding ratio was 0.25. The NO emission was reduced drastically regardless of excess oxygen ratio when the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate was larger than 15 lpm. The CO emission is varied by changing the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate but the CO emission characteristics is highly affected by excess oxygen ratio. When the excess oxygen ratio is below ${\lamda}=1.1$, the CO emission increased as the $CO_2$ feeding flow rate increased.

  • We examined the characteristics of $NO_x$ emission for CH4/air non-premixed flames using the exhaust gas recirculation(EGR) methods, which are the air-induced EGR(AI-EGR) and fuel-induced EGR(FI-EGR) methods. Our experimental results show that the $NO_x$ emission index($EI_{NOx}$) decreased with increasing EGR ratio. In the range needed to form a stable flame, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 29% when the EGR ratio was 20%, and the reduction rate for the AI-EGR method was approximately 28% with 25% of the EGR ratio. According to the flame structure based on numerical results, high temperature regions for the FI-EGR method were narrower and lower than those for the AI-EGR method at the same EGR ratio. Furthermore, based on the experimental results for swirl flames, the reduction rate of $EI_{NOx}$ for the FI-EGR method was approximately 49% with 15% of the EGR ratio, while the maximum reduction rate for AI-EGR method was approximately 45% with 25% of the EGR ratio. Consequently, we verified that the FI-EGR method was more effective than the AI-EGR method in reducing $NO_x$ emission for non-premixed flames with EGR. We expect that the results of this study will provide fundamental information relating to hybrid combustion systems, which can be used in the design of combustion systems in the future.
