The combustion characteristics of the D.I. diesel engine are largely dependent on the air-fuel ratio and the gas exchange process. The main factors are the shape of combustion chamber, fuel injection system, air flow inside the cylinder, intake air mass flow rate and so forth. Because these factors affect the combustion in a mutual and combined manner, it is very important to clearly understand the correlation of these factors in order to provide the combustion improvement plans. In this paper, we studied the performance and the gas exchange process of marine four-stroke engine using the engine cycle simulation. Also, we predicted briefly turbocharger engine matching.

In a recent study, it was observed that the combustion gas entering the post chamber of a hybrid rocket contains vortices with very small size and high frequency characteristics. In addition, it was observed that small vortices collided with the nozzle wall to create a counter-flow, resulting in additional combustion with ignition delay. This study investigated the physical relationship between ignition delay induced by the counter-flow and the formation of beating pressure. To do this, a newly modified model was proposed by including ignition delay in the existing energy kicked oscillator model proposed by Culick. Numerical results show that the ignition delay is an important factor in determining the occurrence of the combustion pressure beats through the periodic formation of thermoacoustic coupling. In addition, when the ignition delay was reduced by increasing the post chamber length, the phase difference between the energy kick and the pressure generation was increased, the periodic pressure beats did not occur at all.

The interaction between wall blowing and oxidizer flow can generate a very complicated flow characteristics in combustion chamber of hybrid rockets. LES analysis was conducted with an in-house CFD code to investigate the features of turbulent flow without chemical reactions. The numerical results reveal that the flow oscillations at a certain frequency exists on the fuel surface, which is analogous to those observed in the solid propellant combustion. However, the observation of oscillating flow at a certain frequency is only limited to a very thin layer adjacent to wall surface and the strength of the oscillation is not strong enough to induce the drastic change in temperature gradient on the surface. The visualization of fluctuating pressure components shows the periodic appearance of relatively high and low pressure regions along the axial direction. This subsequently results in the oscillation of flow at a certain fixed frequency. This implies that the resonance phenomenon would be possible if the external disturbances such as acoustic excitation could be imposed to the oscillating flow in the combustion chamber.

Hot firing tests of sub-scale combustors were carried out to study the characteristic velocity according to the variation of propellant mass flow and injector arrangement. Test results show that there exists an effective range of relative flow-rate density on the condition of similar combustion pressure and mixture ratio. Numerical analysis has also revealed that the increase of the distance between the outermost injector array and the cylindrical chamber wall with film cooling increases the region of low mixture ratio near combustion chamber wall and it decreases the characteristic velocity of the combustor. Thus, it was confirmed that these two factors play an important part in improving the performance of LRE combustor on a predetermined chamber pressure.

The purpose of this research is to model numerically the turbulent gas-particle flows in a rectangular chamber using Eulerian-Eulerian Method. A computer code using the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ two-phase turbulence model is developed for the numerical study. This code and the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT were used for the numerical simulations of the two-phase flow in a rectangular chamber. The numerical results calculated by the two different turbulent gas-particle codes have shown that the ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}-Ap$ model results in a stronger diffusion of the flow momentum in the gas-particle turbulence interaction than the Eulerian multiphase model in FLUENT.
Recently, candles have been widely used to create a romantic atmosphere and to heat tea. In this study, a small combustion chamber for candle was designed using an 0.008 m3 bell jar. The emission factors of combustion products were then measured. The combustion chamber includes a glass dish, which prevents candle flame from affecting the composition of the gas emitted through the exhaust outlet. The outlet in the combustion chamber was designed as a cone shape, and it was lengthened to prevent flow from the outside, which could affect the homogeneous composition of the exhaust gas. The temperature at the outlet of the chamber was 34 ℃~41℃. The major combustion products of the candle, such as such aldehydes and acids, contained oxygen. The mass specific emission rates of benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, and TVOC were 0.04 μg/g, 0.01 μg/g, 0.02 μg/g, and 3.81, respectively. The mass specific emission rates of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde and benzaldehyde were 4.48 μg/g, 1.09 μg/g, and 0.67 μg/g, respectively. Considering the different compositions of the candle samples, their mass specific emission rates were similar to those obtained by using a large chamber 0.17 m3~50 m3 in size.

A practical, 30-tonf-class fullscale thrust chamber has been combustion tested using real propellants for the first time in the domestic technology scene. The very first combustion test was conducted at a low mass flow rate condition for the preliminary assessment of any problems associated with its function and performance while reducing risks from a high chamber pressure never achieved before. A test for the design condition achieved through a low-pressure stage shows stable characteristics of all the static pressures and thrust. Dynamic pressures measured in the manifolds and the chamber did not reveal any distinct wave coupled to a specific frequency and their intensities reside in the allowable range. Moreover, it is encouraging to find no physical failures with a thrust chamber hardware.

The definition of burning admittance and conventional n-$\tau$ stability rating technique are combined to investigate the high frequency combustion instabilities inside the cylindrical combustion chamber. Perturbed flow variables are written as the sum of fluctuating and time-averaged mean quantities on the assumption that the terms of the order higher than unity are sufficiently small, hence linearized governing equations could be formulated. Chamber admittances up and downstream of the flame front calculated with appropriate boundary conditions result in the burning admittance and corresponding n-$\tau$ neutral stability curve. Configurational and operational design factors are tested to detect the unstable wave-induced LOX-RP1 combustion instabilities. Operational design factors, e.g. pressure or O/F ratio, appear less influential to drive high frequency instability while the location of the flame front and configurational factors enhance or deteriorate the stabilities strongly. Conclusively, LOX-RP1 combustion inside the cylindrical combustion chamber is apt to be unstable against long residence time and shortened chamber length.

In this study, we calculated gas flow fields and distribution of fuel droplet and mass fraction using the CONCHAS-SPRAY code which modified to execute in IBM PC and changed three important factors, injection rate pattern (BASIC, I, II, III), different bowl shape and spray type. Especially vortices which be influenced by fuel-air mixing process, evaporation and flame propagation are generated more strongly in the bowl-piston type combustion chamber than in the flat-piston type. As the spray type changes, it is found that conical type produced large and strong vortices and fuel droplets are effictively diffused into the entire combustion chamber. As the injection rate pattern changes I, II, III based on BASIC type, we confirmed that End-of-Injection Effect strongly influence on droplets life time.
This paper illustrates the validity of reciprocating type superadiabatic combustor as a industrial applicable dryer. After the investigations of inner and surface temperature distributions of combustor various with air-fuel(methane) ratio, mixture flow rate and reciprocating time, this combustor can be applied in industrial dryer at certain operating conditions. The results are as follows. 1) Higher equilivalence ratio emits more radiation heat flux at the censer chamber 2) Higher mixture flow rate makes more uniform temperature distribution. however, due to the heat transfer from censer chamber to porous media, the radiation beat flux is worse. 3) Longer reciprocating time emit more radiation heat flux. however, this case also makes temperature distribution wide
