  • Purpose: This study aims to determine what changes occur in body composition and performance by subjecting youth soccer players to weight training and combined training, which are known to be effective in improving anaerobic capacity, for 6 weeks. Research design, data, and methodology: This study was conducted on 30 high school soccer players from S City who had no current injuries or medical problems and had been registered as players with the Korea Football Association for more than 3 years. Subjects were divided into a weight training group (WTG, n=15) and a combined training group (CTG, n=15). Training lasted 6 weeks, and measurements were taken before and after training. Mean (M) and standard deviation (SD) were calculated to present the descriptive statistics of all dependent variables. Paired t-tests were used to test for within-group differences. Further, Independent t-tests were employed to test for between-group differences. Results: In terms of body composition, height significantly increased in WTG and CTG, and body fat percentage significantly decreased in CTG. As for performance, WTG's 20m sprint record decreased significantly. Conclusion: As a result, this study confirmed that weight training improved the 20m sprint ability of youth soccer players. Future research could provide more useful information by extending the study period and incorporating the physical characteristics of adolescents.

  • Objective: This study aimed to determine the efficacy of flexible pole training combined with lumbar stabilization in improving trunk muscle activities and to investigate the difference according to posture in young adults. Methods: Twenty-five participants were enrolled in this study. The subjects were randomly allocated into either the flexible pole group or the rigid pole group. Participants performed lumbar stabilization exercises on quadruped and curl-up, with the flexible pole or rigid pole. Electromyography was used to assess the percent maximal voluntary isometric contracion (%MVIC) of the rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique (EO), internal oblique (IO), and erector spine (ES) muscles. All participants completed one 30-minute session per day, 3 days per week, for 6 weeks. The evaluation was performed before and 6 weeks after the training, and follow-up. The data were analyzed using independent t-test and two-way repeated measure analysis of variance to determine the statistical significance. Results: The flexible pole in curl-up showed significant differences in EO and IO muscle activities compared with the rigid pole. The flexible pole in quadruped showed significant differences in IO and ES muscle activities compared with the rigid pole. The RA, EO, IO, and ES muscle activities of both groups were significantly higher after 6 weeks training. Conclusion: The flexible pole in curl-up and quadruped showed an improvement in trunk muscle activation. The flexible pole combined with lumbar stabilization will be useful as an exercise tool to improve activity of trunk muscles.

  • The aim of this study was to investigate the expression of PPAR-α, -β/δ, -γ, PGC-1α, GLUT-4 and p-AMPK-α2 protein in the skeletal muscle of diabetic induced-rats by endurance training combined with rosiglitazone. The expression of PPAR-α, -β/δ, -γ, PGC-1α, GLUT-4 and p-AMPK-α2 protein in red and white gastrocnemius by western blotting. The body weight was higher in diabetic induced-rats compared to the normal rats and after the treatment of exercise combined with rosiglitazone was significantly reduced in the all group. The levels of blood glucose was higher in diabetic induced-rats compared to the normal rats and after the treatment of exercise combined with rosiglitazone was significantly reduced in the all group. The expression of PPAR-α, -γ, PGC-1α in skeletal muscle of diabetic induced-rats were increased all groups and increased significantly in the group with exercise combined with rosiglitazone. The expression of GLUT-4 and p-AMPK-α2 protein in the skeletal muscle of diabetic induced-rats were increased all groups and increased significantly in the group with exercise combined with rosiglitazoneI. These results suggest that exercise training and rosiglitazone may act as complementary therapies for the treatment of insulin rasistance.

  • Gender prediction accuracy increases as convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture evolves. This paper compares voting and ensemble schemes to utilize the already trained five CNN models to further improve gender prediction accuracy. The majority voting usually requires odd-numbered models while the proposed softmax-based voting can utilize any number of models to improve accuracy. The ensemble of CNN models combined with one more fully-connected layer requires further tuning or training of the models combined. With experiments, it is observed that the voting or ensemble of CNN models leads to further improvement of gender prediction accuracy and that especially softmax-based voters always show better gender prediction accuracy than majority voters. Also, compared with softmax-based voters, ensemble models show a slightly better or similar accuracy with added training of the combined CNN models. Softmax-based voting can be a fast and efficient way to get better accuracy without further training since the selection of the top accuracy models among available CNN pre-trained models usually leads to similar accuracy to that of the corresponding ensemble models.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of either endurance training only or endurance and weight training on muscle morphology and oxidative enzyme activities in human skeletal muscles. Fourteen healthy males were randomly divided into one of two experimental training groups, either swim exercise training (n=7, ST) or combined exercise training (swim and resistance exercise training; n=7, SWT). The change of muscle fiber type was not significantly different between ST and SWT following 6 weeks of exercise training. Mean cross sectional areas as well as the numbers of capillary of different types of muscle fiber were not also significantly different from baseline for both exercise training groups (p>.05) although the tendency of increase were more notable in SWT. All oxidative enzyme activities (i.e., ${\beta}$-hydroxyl acyl dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, and carnitine palmitoyl transferase) were marginally higher in SWT compared to ST even though statistical power did not reach the level of significance. Based on these results, it was concluded that performing of combined (swimming and weight) exercise training could be the better modality for improving muscle morphological changes and oxidative enzyme activities than performing of only single aerobic exercise intervention in young healthy human skeletal muscles.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the effects of a 6-week high-intensity combined training program on canoe athletes' cardiorespiratory function, isokinetic trunk strength, and anaerobic power. For the purpose of this study, the high-intensity combined training program was applied to 9 high-school canoe athletes. The high-intensity combined training program consists of aerobic exercise performed 2 times a week (Tuesday and Thursday), anaerobic exercise performed 3 times a week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday), and flexibility exercise performed 5 times a week. The core of the high-intensity combined training program was the anaerobic training program performed with 100% weight for repetition; otherwise, the existing training method was divided into the percentage (%) of the 1RM. The aerobic exercise and the gym ball exercise are performed subsidiarily. Results showed that there was a statistically significant difference in height and muscle mass, whereas there was no statistically significant difference in weight, body fat percentage, and BMI followed by the high-intensity combined training program. There were statistically significant differences in maximum oxygen uptake and total exercise time. The angular velocity of 30°/sec showed a statistically significant difference in the peak torque item of flexors only. Also, the angular velocity of 120°/sec showed a statistically significant difference in the total work item of extensors only; however, there was no statistically significant difference in all the items of peak power, average power, and peak drop. In conclusion, it seems that the high-intensity combined training program may be applied as a training program for enhancing canoe athletes' performance. For further studies, more than 6 weeks training program with more participants would show improved results of isokinetic strength and anaerobic power in athlets.
