  • A sewage was treated using serially combined vertical(VFCW)and horizontal flow sand-filled reed constructed wetland(HFCW) with intermittent feeding. The sand had 1~3 mm diameter. The sewage entering the sewage treatment plant of Gyeonsang National University was fed into the reed constructed wetland bed for 10 minutes every 6 hours at the hydraulic load of $314L/m^2{\cdot}day$ based on the surface ares of the VFCW. In the VFCW effluent pH values were lower than those of the influent, whereas they were higher than those of the influent in the HFCW. DO values were increased in VFCW, but they were decreased in the HFCW. The OTR was $58.72gO_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in the VFCW and $7.72gO_2/m^2{\cdot}day$ in the HFCW. Average removal efficiencies were SS 94.80%, BOD 90.77%, $COD_{Cr}$ 85.87%, $COD_{Mn}$ 87.72%, T-N 64.74%, $NH_4{^+}$-N 86.44%, T-P 87.70%. Nearly, half of T-N in the effluent was $NO_3{^-}$-N but the concentration of $NO_2{^-}$-N in the effluent was less than 0.64 mg/L.

  • During and shortly after the 2017 Pohang Earthquake ($M_w$ 5.4), sand blows were observed around the epicenter for the first time since the beginning of instrumental seismic recording in South Korea. We carried out field surveys plus satellite and drone imagery analyses, resulting in observation of approximately 600 sand blows on Quaternary sediment cover in this area. Most were observed within 3 km of the epicenter, with the farthest being 15 km away. In order to investigate the ground's susceptibility to liquefaction, we conducted a trench study of a 30 m-long sand blow in a rice field 1 km from the earthquake epicenter. The physical characteristics of the liquified sediments (grain size, impermeable barriers, saturation, and low overburden pressure) closely matched the optimum ground conditions for liquefaction. Additionally, we found a series of soft sediment deformation structures (SSDSs) within the trench walls, such as load structures and water-escaped structures. The latter were vertically connected to sand blows on the surface, reflecting seismogenic liquefaction involving subsurface deformation during sand blow formation. This genetic linkage suggests that SSDS research would be useful for identifying prehistoric damage-inducing earthquakes ($M_w$ > 5.0) in South Korea because SSDSs have a lower formation threshold and higher preservational potential than geomorphic markers formed by surface ruptures. Thus, future combined studies of Quaternary surface faults and SSDSs are required to provide reliable paleoseismological information in Korea.

  • Purpose: To investigate shear bonding strength between dental zirconia ceramics with different surface treatment and metal bracket. Methods: Zirconia ceramics(LAVA, 3M ESPE, USA) were divided to 4 groups according to their surface treatment; no surface treatment(G1), sand blasting(G2), silane coating(G3), and sand blasting+silane coating(G4). Specimens were bonded to metal bracket using resin bond($Transbond^{TM}XT$, 3M Unitek, USA). Shear bond strength was measured using universal test machine(3366 INSTRON. U.S.A) with cross head speed of 1 mm/min. Microstructural investigation for fracture surface was performed after shear test. Results: Shear bonding strengths of single surface treatment groups (G2 and G3) were higher than no treatment group(G1). Combined Treatment Group (G4) showed the highest shear bond strength of 9.15MPa. Microstructural observation shows that higher shear bonding strength was obtained when debonding was occurred at metal bracket/resin interface rather than zirconia ceramic/resin interface. Conclusion: Surface treatment of zirconia is necessary to obtain higher bonding strength. Combined treatment can be more effective when surface the surfaces are kept clean and homogeneous.

  • To obtain the experimental data for design and operation of actual filtration processes, a sand filter and three kinds of dual media filters in pilot-plant scale were operated in this study. We analyzed the effect of filter medium composition on the filter performance and the effects of backwash water flow rates, length of stream line and air flow rate on the filter backwash efficiency. We also compared the efficiencies of the combined air-water backwashing and the water backwashing in dual media filters. As the backwash water flow rates or the length of stream line increased, the final turbidity of backwash water was decreased and the filtration duration time after backwash was increased. In the case of the combined air-water backwashing, the backwash water quantity needed for backwashing the dual media filters could be decreased. The total volume of filtered water for the dual media filters during filter run was over three times larger than that for the sand filter. The dual media filters could be operated at a high filtration rate of 360 m/day.

  • This study reviewed the possibility of recycling into exhausted aggregate resources in Korea as a means of utilizing coal gasification slag(CGS) from integrated gasification combined cycle(IGCC) while being commissioned in order to introduce the new system to Korea. In other words, in order to solve the problem of insufficient aggregate resources, CGS generated by IGCC as a residual aggregate for concrete secondary products, which is an empty mortar, was considered to replace CGS in the range of 0 to 100 % for mixed residual aggregate mixed with crushed sand A(CSa) of good quality and sea sand(SS) of deep particles, which are the most commonly used in the domestic construction industry. According to the study, replacing CGS with CSa or crushed sand B(CSb)+SS by 25 % to 50 % resulted in good results in the aspect of the granularity of the aggregate and the workability and compressive strength of cement mortar, which were found to be usable.

  • While various aspects affect river water quality, reduction of water flow rate during dry seasons is one of the most significant factors causing severe water pollution in river water environment. The aim of this study is to investigate the feasibility of applying a physicochemical method (sand filtration + ozonation) for improving river water quality within a short period. The parameters analyzed and assessed were $COD_{cr}$, BOD, SS and color. The source river water had a severe pollution level showing COD 8.8~17.2 mg/L (ave. 11.9 mg/L), BOD 4.8~13.3 mg/L (ave. 8.3 mg/L), SS 9.0~22.1 mg/L (ave. 12.8 mg/L) and color 34.4~77.1 degree (ave. 56.5 degree) during the experimental periods. The variation trends showed a relatively low correlation between BOD and COD and between color and COD, while SS showed very low correlation with other parameters. The combined process of sand filtration and ozonation showed averaged removal efficiency of COD 37.2%, BOD 48.4%, SS 60.1% and colority 45.1%, respectively. The marked change of BOD level from 8.3 mg/L to 4.3 mg/L under the experimental conditions in this study implied the improvement of class V to class III set by the river water quality standard in Korea.

  • A combined treatment system using multiple source water is becoming important as an alternative to conventional water supply for small-scale water systems. In this research, combined water treatment systems were investigated for simultaneous use of multi-source water including rainwater, ground water, river water, and reclaimed wastewater. A laboratory-scale system was developed to systematically compare various combinations of water treatment processes, including sand filtration, microfiltration (MF), granular activated carbon (GAC), and nanofiltration (NF). Results showed that the efficiency of combined water treatment systems was affected by the quality of feed waters. In addition, a simply approach based on the concept of linear combination was suggested to support a decision-making for the optimum water treatment systems with the consideration of final water quality.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay wall, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has widely been applied. Improved ground is composite ground which is consisted of the sand pile-surrounding clayey soil. As caisson and upper structures are installed on SCP composite ground, the settlement is compositively occurred by elastic compression of sand compaction piles and also consolidation of the surrounding clay ground. In this study, the combined settlement model is proposed to predict the settlement of SCP composite ground in basis of elastic theory for sand compaction pile and consolidation theory for marine soft clay. Optimization technique was performed based on back-analysis so that real coded genetic algorithm was applied to estimate the parameters of the proposed settlement model. Case analysis was carried out for a domestic SCP composite ground to examine the applicability of the proposed prediction technique.

  • An algorithm for detection of yellow sand aerosols has been developed with infrared bands from Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and Multi-functional Transport Satellite-1 Replacement (MTSAT-1R) data. The algorithm is the hybrid algorithm that has used two methods combined together. The first method used the differential absorption in brightness temperature difference between $11{\mu}m$ and $12{\mu}m$ (BTD1). The radiation at 11 ${\mu}m$ is absorbed more than at 12 ${\mu}m$ when yellow sand is loaded in the atmosphere, whereas it will be the other way around when cloud is present. The second method uses the brightness temperature difference between $3.7{\mu}m$ and $11{\mu}m$ (BTD2). The technique would be most sensitive to dust loading during the day when the BTD2 is enhanced by reflection of $3.7{\mu}m$ solar radiation. We have applied the three methods to MTSAT-1R for derivation of the yellow sand dust and in conjunction with the Principle Component Analysis (PCA), a form of eigenvector statistical analysis. As produced Principle Component Image (PCI) through the PCA is the correlation between BTD1 and BTD2, errors of about 10% that have a low correlation are eliminated for aerosol detection. For the region of aerosol detection, aerosol index (AI) is produced to the scale of BTD1 and BTD2 values over land and ocean respectively. AI shows better results for yellow sand detection in comparison with the results from individual method. The comparison between AI and OMI aerosol index (AI) shows remarkable good correlations during daytime and relatively good correlations over the land.

  • The fluvial sequence developed along the channel margin of meander bends in the midstream of the Yeongsan River consists of channel deposits at the bottom and overbank deposits at the top, and shows a fining-upward trend. The fluvial deposits consist of 7 sedimentary facies, and facies association forms 7 architectural elements. The channel deposits formed as channel bar or point bar. The channel bar deposits consisted of architectural element of gravel bedform were formed by channel lag deposits within the channel; whereas, the channel bar deposits consisted of architectural elements of downcurrent-dipping inclined strata sets, cross-stratified and horizontally stratified sets, and horizontally stratified sets were formed by downstream migration of sand wave or downstream transport of sand by traction current in the upper flow regime conditions within the channel. The point bar deposits consist of architectural elements of down current-dipping inclined strata sets, horizontally stratified sets, cross-stratified and horizontally stratified sets, and laterally inclined and horizontally stratified sets. These architectural elements are thought to have been formed by the combined effects of the migration of sand dunes and the formation of horizontal lamination in the upper flow regime plane bed conditions. The overbank deposits consist of the architectural elements of overbank fine and sand sheet and lens. The overbank fines were formed by settling of mud from slackwater during flooding over floodplain whereas the sand sheet and lens were formed by traction of sands introduced episodically fiom channel to the overbank during flooding.
