  • The effects of water injection (WI) and urea injection for NOx on a 4-cylinder Direct Injection (DI) diesel engine were investigated experimentally. For water injection, it was installed at the intake pipe and the water quantity was controlled at the intake manifold and Manifold Air Flow (MAF) temperatures while the urea injection was located at the exhaust pipe and the urea quantity was controlled by NOx quantity and MAF. The effects of WI system, urea-SCR system and the combined system were investigated with and without exhaust gas recirculation (EGR). Several experiments were performed to characterize the urea-SCR system, using engine operating points of varying raw NOx emissions. The results of the Stoichiometric Urea Flow (SUF) and NOx map were obtained. In addition, NOx results were illustrated according to the engine speed and load. It is concluded that the NOx reduction effects of the combined system without the EGR were better than those with the EGR-based engine.

  • The paper presents the method to estimate the bottom shear stress driven by waves and current on rough turbulent flow. Parameter adjusting technique is suggested for the computation of bed shear stress driven by uni-directional flow, and the value ofpararneter is determined by comparing the computational results against Bijker's laboratory data. For the computation of combined flow bottom shear stress, two methods are presented; one is the modified Bijker approach (BYO Model) and the other is the modified Fredsoe approach (FY Model), both of which are refined by the present writers. BYO model is again refined in the computation of maximum shear stress, and the final version is tested against Bijkcr's laboratory data.

  • This paper presents analysis results for the effect of power control strategies on the part load performance of gas turbine based power generation systems utilizing exhaust heat of the gas turbine such as combined cycle power plants and regenerative gas turbines. For the combined cycle, part load efficiency variations were compared among different single shaft gas turbines representing various technology levels. Power control strategies considered were fuel only control and IGV control. It has been observed that gas turbines with higher design performances exhibit superior part load performances. Improvement of part load efficiency of the combined cycle by adopting air flow modulation was analyzed and it was concluded that since the average combined cycle performance is affected by the range of IGV control as well as its temperature control principle, a control strategy appropriate for the load characteristics of the individual plant should be adopted. For the regenerative gas turbine, it is likewise concluded that maintaining exhaust temperature as high as possible by air flow rate modulation is required to increase part load efficiency.

  • The output of Stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide a basic data for the design of regenerator matrix, characteristics of heat transfer and flow friction loss were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, 6 kinds of steel wires, 4 kinds of combined steel wires, 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes were used. The results are summarized as follows; Among 6 kinds of steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm,\;{\phi}\;1.6\;mm,\;{\phi}2.0\;mm,\;{\phi}2.7\;mm),$ the two steel wires $({\phi}0.7\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm)$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 4 kinds of combined steel wires $({\phi}l.6-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}l.6\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}l.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm),\;the\;{\phi}1.2-{\phi}0.9\;mm$ showed the highest in effectiveness. Among 8 kinds of combined steel wires with screen meshes $(150-{\phi}0.9\;mm,\;150-{\phi}l.2\;mm,\;{\phi}0.9\;mm-150,\;{\phi}1.2\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}0.9\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}1.2\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}l.6\;mm-150,\;150-{\phi}2.0\;mm-150),\;the\;{\phi}l.2\;mm-150$ showed the highest in effectiveness.

  • Sewage separation which often involves installing a new pipe to separate wastewater flow from stormwater runoff flow can be costly and depends highly on its feasibility in a site. To be able to develop a potentially more economical alternative that can also lessen major road traffic disturbance during this process, a different approach where a smaller sewage separator pipe is installed inside an existing combined sewer pipe was investigated. A small-scale of a box sewer and the proposed sewage separator pipe was constructed in the laboratory to observe and compare the deposition of solids and other solid-associated major pollutants at different flow rates. In addition, three-dimensional flow simulations considering five different scenarios were conducted using Ansys Fluent to observe the effect of the proposed sewage separator pipe to the hydraulic flow if installed inside the combined sewer pipe. Results revealed that the deposition of TSS, TCOD, TN, and TP were reduced by at least 60% when the wastewater was conveyed by the sewage separator pipe instead of the combined sewer pipe. Moreover, the flow simulations conducted showed that there was little to no major disturbance in hydraulic flow and velocity distribution when the sewage separator was installed inside a straight pipe and even at pipe transitions such as intersections, turns, and drop in elevation. Considering the pipe dimensions and the results of the study, the proposed approach can be promising in terms of reduction in pollutant deposition without a major effect on the hydraulic flow. Further investigation and cost-analysis should be done in the future to support these preliminary findings and help alleviate the problems caused by combined sewer overflows by introducing an alternative approach.

  • The simplified impedance model which can consider a combined flow condition was suggested. Although the strength and position of the shear layer cannot be obtained by a linear sum of two separate contributions when both flows occur together, it was simply assumed that the impedance under the combined flow follows from summing the separate flow impedance. To validate the simplified impedance model, acoustic properties of a concentric resonator was predicted and measured. The predicted transmission loss using the simplified model shows reasonable agreements with measurements. One can find that the simplified impedance model obtained by the superposition of the separate flow impedances can be adjusted to predict the acoustic properties of a concentric resonator.

  • AILU type preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation of the interaction of rigid cylinder with incompressible fluid flow have been devised and tested by solving fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a rigid cylinder with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 mixed finite element formulation coupled with combined formulation. Four different preconditioners were devised for the two-dimensional combined P2P1 finite element formulation extending the idea of Nam et al., which was proposed for the preconditioning of a P2P1 mixed finite element formulation of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. It was found that PC-III or PC-IV among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence rate for some bench-mark problems.

  • Preconditioners for a two-dimensional combined finite element formulation have been devised and tested for fluid-structure interaction (FSI) problems. The FSI code simulating the interaction of a elastic body with an unsteady flow is based on P2P1 finite element combined formulation. It has been shown that two preconditioners among them perform well with respect to computational memory and convergence for a bench-mark problem. Based on the verification of the preconditioners for the two-dimensional combined formulation, four preconditioners are proposed for the problem of an elastic body interacting with a flow.

  • The Savonius wind turbine has a lower performance than other types of wind turbines which may attract more study focus on this turbine. This study aimed to improve wind turbine performance by combining a conventional blade with an elliptical blade into a combined blade rotor. The analysis was performed on three blade models in computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using ANSYS_Fluent Release 14.5. Then the results were verified experimentally using an open wind tunnel system. The results of the numerical simulation were similar to the experimental and showed that the combined blade rotor has better dragging flow and overlap flow than the conventional and elliptical blade. Experimental verification showed that the combined blade was to increase the maximum coefficient of power ($Cp_{max.}$) by 11% of the conventional blade and to 5.5% of the elliptical blade.

  • The friction factor equation of open channel flow is developed by using Prandtl's mixing length theory and considering the flow characteristics of smooth or rough turbulent flow. BYO model considers vertical velocity profile for the (:omputation of bottom friction of surface waves and current flow. The model computes the mean bottom friction of combined wave-current flow by the vectorial summation of wave velocity and current velocity at Bijker point. The near bottom flow is discriminated by three flow regimes; smooth, transitional and rough turbulent flow. The model, BYO, has been further refined considering the combination of smooth turbulent flow and rough turbulent flow.
