  • The cultured meat industry is continuously evolving due to the collective efforts of cultured meat companies and academics worldwide. Though still technologically limited, recent reports of regulatory approvals for cultured meat companies have initiated the standards-based approach towards cultured meat production. Incidents of deception in the meat industry call for fool-proof authentication methods to ensure consumer safety, product quality, and traceability. The cultured meat industry is not exempt from the threats of food fraud. Meat authentication techniques based on DNA, protein, and metabolite fingerprints of animal meat species needs to be evaluated for their applicability to cultured meat. Technique-based categorization of cultured meat products could ease the identification of appropriate authentication methods. The combination of methods with high sensitivity and specificity is key to increasing the accuracy and precision of meat authentication. The identification of markers (both physical and biochemical) to differentiate conventional meat from cultured meat needs to be established to ensure overall product traceability. The current review briefly discusses some areas in the cultured meat industry that are vulnerable to food fraud. Specifically, it targets the current meat and meat product authentication tests to emphasize the need for ensuring the traceability of cultured meat.

  • The drone serves the customers not served by vans. At the same time, considering the safety, policy and terrain as well as the need to replace the battery, the drone needs to be transported by truck to the identified station along with the parcel. From each such station, the drone serves a subset of customers according to a direct assignment pattern, i.e., every time the drone is launched, it serves one demand node and returns to the station to collect another parcel. Similarly, the truck is used to transport the drone and cargo between stations. This is somewhat different from the research of other scholars. In terms of the joint distribution of the drone and road vehicle, most scholars will choose the combination of two transportation tools, while we use three. The drone and vans are responsible for distribution services, and the trucks are responsible for transporting the goods and drone to the station. The goal is to optimize the total delivery cost which includes the transportation costs for the vans and the delivery cost for the drone. A fixed cost is also considered for each drone parking site corresponding to the cost of positioning the drone and using the drone station. A discrete optimization model is presented for the problem in addition to a two-phase heuristic algorithm. The results of a series of computational tests performed to assess the applicability of the model and the efficiency of the heuristic are reported. The results obtained show that nearly 10% of the cost can be saved by combining the traditional delivery mode with the use of a drone and drone stations.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate retest reliabilities in longitudinal study, the same test is administered repeatedly over time. Linear mixed models were used to establish various situations of tests occurred in longitudinal study. Combination of two types of true value and three types of systematic error was considered. In order to apply the models to real longitudinal data, height data from the Berkeley growth study and vocabulary score data from the University of Chicago experimental school were used. Using the mixed model, there is an advantage that the reliability can be determined by selecting the covariance structure of the true value and the error separately. However, in order to properly analyze the reliability, researchers need to consider variations that can occur in measurement, such as characteristics of subject, the test, and the the treatment applied in the study. And the proper model should be selected and the quality of the measurement should be evaluated for each trial.

  • Ginseng is a traditional herbal medicine used for prevention and treatment of various diseases as a tonic. Recent scientific cohort studies on life prolongation with ginseng consumption support this record, as those who consumed ginseng for more than 5 years had reduced mortality and cognitive decline compared to those who did not. Clinical studies have also shown that acute or long-term intake of ginseng total extract improves acute working memory performance or cognitive function in healthy individuals and those with subjective memory impairment (SMI), mild cognitive impairment (MCI), or early Alzheimer's disease (AD) dementia who are taking AD medication(s). Ginseng contains various components ranging from classical ginsenosides and polysaccharides to more recently described gintonin. However, it is unclear which ginseng component(s) might be the main candidate that contribute to memory or cognitive improvements or prevent cognitive decline in older individuals. This review describes recent clinical contributors to ginseng components in clinical tests and introduces emerging evidence that ginseng components could be novel candidates for cognitive improvement in older individuals, as ginseng components improve SMI cognition and exhibits add-on effects when coadministered with early AD dementia drugs. The mechanism behind the beneficial effects of ginseng components and how it improves cognition are presented. Additionally, this review shows how ginseng components can contribute to SMI, MCI, or early AD dementia when used as a supplementary food and/or medicine, and proposes a novel combination therapy of current AD medicines with ginseng component(s).

  • Objective: This study aimed to develop and evaluate the effectiveness of a water-soluble microencapsulation method for probiotic strains using gum Arabic (GA) and skim milk (SKM) over a three-month storage period following processing. Methods: Four strains of Pediococcus acidilactici (BYF26, BYF20, BF9, and BF14) that were typical lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from the chicken gut were mixed with different ratios of GA and SKM as coating agents before spray drying at an inlet temperature 140℃. After processing, the survivability and probiotic qualities of the strains were assessed from two weeks to three months of storage at varied temperatures, and de-encapsulation was performed to confirm the soluble properties. Finally, the antibacterial activity of the probiotics was assessed under simulated gastrointestinal conditions. Results: As shown by scanning electron microscopy, spray-drying produced a spherical, white-yellow powder. The encapsulation efficacy (percent) was greatest for a coating containing a combination of 30% gum Arabic: 30% skim milk (w/v) (GA:SKM30) compared to lower concentrations of the two ingredients (p<0.05). Coating with GA:SKM30 (w/v) significantly enhanced (p<0.05) BYF26 survival under simulated gastrointestinal conditions (pH 2.5 to 3) and maintained higher survival rates compared to non-encapsulated cells under an artificial intestinal juices condition of pH 6. De-encapsulation tests indicated that the encapsulated powder dissolved in water while keeping viable cell counts within the effective range of 106 for 6 hours. In addition, following three months storage at 4℃, microencapsulation of BYF26 in GA:SKM30 maintained both the number of viable cells (p<0.05) and the preparation's antibacterial efficacy against pathogenic bacteria, specifically strains of Salmonella. Conclusion: Our prototype water-soluble probiotic microencapsulation GA:SKM30 effectively maintains LAB characteristics and survival rates, demonstrating its potential for use in preserving probiotic strains that can be used in chickens and potentially in other livestock.

  • Background: Tolerance to the analgesic effects of opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) is a major concern for relieving pain. Thus, it is highly valuable to find new pharmacological strategies for prolonged therapeutic procedures. Biguanide-type drugs such as metformin (MET) are effective for neuroprotection and can be beneficial for addressing opioid tolerance in the treatment of chronic pain. It has been proposed that analgesic tolerance to NSAIDs is mediated by the endogenous opioid system. According to the cross-tolerance between NSAIDs, especially sodium salicylate (SS), and opiates, especially morphine, the objective of this study was to investigate whether MET administration can reduce tolerance to the anti-nociceptive effects of SS. Methods: Fifty-six male Wistar rats were used in this research (weight 200-250 g). For induction of tolerance, SS (300 mg/kg) was injected intraperitoneally for 7 days. During the examination period, animals received MET at doses of 50, 75, or 100 mg/kg for 7 days to evaluate the development of tolerance to the analgesic effect of SS. The hot plate test was used to evaluate the drugs' anti-nociceptive properties. Results: Salicylate injection significantly increased hot plate latency as compared to the control group, but the total analgesic effect of co-treatment with SS + Met50 was stronger than the SS group. Furthermore, the effect of this combination undergoes less analgesic tolerance over time. Conclusions: It can be concluded that MET can reduce the analgesic tolerance that is induced by repeated intraperitoneal injections of SS in Wister rats.

  • Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are a diverse collection of lung disorders sharing similar features, such as inflammation and fibrosis. The diagnosis and management of ILD require a multidisciplinary approach using clinical, radiological, and pathological evaluation. Progressive pulmonary fibrosis (PPF) is a distinct form of progressive and fibrotic disease, occurring in ILD cases other than in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). It is defined based on clinical symptoms, lung function, and chest imaging, regardless of the underlying condition. The progression to PPF must be monitored through a combination of pulmonary function tests (forced vital capacity [FVC] and diffusing capacity of the lung for carbon monoxide), an assessment of symptoms, and computed tomography scans, with regular follow-up. Although the precise mechanisms of PPF remain unclear, there is evidence of shared pathogenetic mechanisms with IPF, contributing to similar disease behavior and worse prognosis compared to non-PPF ILD. Pharmacological treatment of PPF includes immunomodulatory agents to reduce inflammation and the use of antifibrotics to target progressive fibrosis. Nintedanib, a known antifibrotic agent, was found to be effective in slowing IPF progression and reducing the annual rate of decline in FVC among patients with PPF compared to placebos. Nonpharmacological treatment, including pulmonary rehabilitation, supplemental oxygen therapy, and vaccination, also play important roles in the management of PPF, leading to comprehensive care for patients with ILD. Although there is currently no cure for PPF, there are treatments that can help slow the progression of the disease and improve quality of life.

  • Background: There is limited data regarding the clinical outcomes of clonal hematopoiesis of indeterminate potential (CHIP) in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). This study aimed to evaluate the clinical significance of CHIP as a COPD biomarker. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted on patients with COPD who were enrolled prospectively in the Seoul National University Hospital Airway Registry from January 2013 to December 2019 and underwent pulmonary function and blood tests. We evaluated the CHIP score according to smoking status and severity of airflow obstruction. Results: We analyzed next-generation sequencing data to detect CHIP in 125 patients with COPD. Current smokers had a higher prevalence of CHIP in combination of DNMT3A, TET2, and PPM1D (DTP), DNA methyltransferase 3 alpha (DNMT3A), and protein phosphatase, Mg2+/Mn2+ dependent 1D (PPM1D) genes than in never- or ex-smokers. CHIP of DTP and DNMT3A genes was significantly associated with current smokers (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 2.80; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01 to 7.79) (aOR, 4.03; 95% CI, 1.09 to 14.0). Patients with moderate-to-severe airflow obstruction had a higher prevalence of CHIP in most of the explored genes than those with mild obstruction, although the difference was not statistically significant. CHIP in ASXL transcriptional regulator 1 (ASXL1) genes was significantly associated with history of mild, severe, and total acute exacerbation. Conclusion: Given that CHIP in specific genes was significantly associated with current smoking status and acute exacerbation, CHIP can be considered as a candidate biomarker for COPD patients.

  • Objective : The purpose of this study is to report a case of treating alcoholic liver disease patients with jaundice and eating disorder through Korean Medicine treatment. Methods : The patient was administered with additional Gagampyeongwi-san and Sinseonbulchuidan for 30 days. For acupuncture, the colonic reducing method (大腸勝格, LI-) and spleen tonifying method (脾正格, SP+) of hand acupuncture were applied. 內關 (PC6), 公孫 (SP4), 三陰交 (SP6), and 足三里 (ST36) were basically collected, and additional 率谷 (GB8), 合谷 (LI4), and 百會 (GV20) were additionally drained and collected by body acupuncture. During the inpatient treatment period, three liver function tests were performed. Results : AST and ALT were restored to the normal range, and γ-GTP and CPK were also reduced, indicating that alcoholic hepatitis was greatly recovered. Total bilirubin and direct bilirubin were also recovered close to normal, and it was predictable that the liver excretion capacity due to hepatocellular damage was also restored, and the findings of biliary obstruction were alleviated close to normal values. When looking at the rise of eGFR along with BUN and uric acid, it seems that kidney function was recovered and improved. Conclusions : Through the combination treatment of Korean Medicine and fluid treatment, it was effective in recovering jaundice and eating disorder for alcoholic liver disease.

  • This paper introduces a new method to estimate the loss of prestressing force for the externally prestressing tendon. The proposed method that combines of HGA and FEM is able to identify the lost tensile force of a externally prestressed tendon. The identification variables of the proposed method is a exteranlly prestressed tendon of tension, effective nominal diameter, mass per unit length and Rayleigh damping coefficients. First of all, a finite element model system is constructed to consider the effect of damping, and these variables are identified using inverse analysis technique - updating algorithm. Finally, throughout total 3 cases of numerical tests, the numerical propriety of the proposed method is verified. Here, it is seen that the errors in the estimated variables by the proposed method are about 1% except in the case of Rayleigh damping coefficients.
