  • This paper is to investigate the shrinkage properties of ultra high strength concrete(UHSC) incorporating $5\%$ of expansive additives(EA) along with $1\%$ of shrinkage reducing agent(SRA). UHSC subjected to steam curing and incorporated with steel fiber exhibited higher compressive strength than control UHSC by as much as50MPa at 7days, while at 28days, noticeable change in compressive strength was not observed between UHSC mixtures. Control UHSC subjected to steam curing had a $922{\times}10^6$ of autogenous shrinkage strain value, which was 6.7 times of drying shrinkage strain value at 42 days. The combination of EA and SRA resulted in a decrease in autogenous shrinkage by as much as half of control mixture. Steam curing contributed to the reduction of autogenous shrinkage by as much as $11\%$ compared with that of standard curing.

  • Concrete structure often exhibit cracks due to the combination of material construction and design error. Minor crack can be tolerated depending on exposure condition, but major cracks are aesthetically unpleasant and affect the durability and safety of the structure. All of the reinforced concrete structure have many inevitable cracks for various reason such as drying shrinkage, heat liberation of cement and over loads. Epoxy resin injection widely used for repairing cracks in concrete is too sensitive to high temperature. Besides, the problem in the epoxy resin injection is the difficulty of quality control after execution. Whereas, Ultra Fine Cement is similar in coefficient of thermal expansion and modulus of elasticity to concrete. The objective of the study is to find out that it is possible for Ultra Fine Cement to be used for repairing cracks in reinforced concrete.

  • This study investigates the temperature history of slab mock-up specimens for hot weather concreting applying various surface insulating methods, in order to improve concrete quality at hot weather condition. Test showed that the use of insulating blanket or a bubble sheet on upper section of slab prevented from abrupt increase of temperature and vaporization of moisture during early curing at hot weather circumstance. In addition, it secured higher strength at early age. Therefore it is concluded that concrete construction insulating with the bubble sheet will reduce the plastic and drying shrinkage as well as improve strength at early age, thus securing concrete duality.

  • This paper investigates the temperature history of slab mock-up specimens with various surface curing sheets, in order to determine a favorable surface curing method in hot weather condition. Test showed that insulating double bubble sheets+aluminum foil simultaneously on the upper section of a specimen prevented an increase of sudden temperature and a decrease of vaporization when placed during the hot weather condition. It also secured the high strength in early age. Therefore it is found that using the double bubble sheets+aluminum foil on concrete surface declined the plastic and drying shrinkage and inclined the early strength, thus improving the concrete quality.

  • This study investigated the fundamental properties and shrinkage properties of high performance concrete with water/binder ratio of 0, 30 and with combination of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent. According to the results, the fluidity of high performance concrete showed lower the using method in combination with expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent than the separately using method of that, so the amount of superplasticizer increased when the adding ratio of expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent increased. However the air content of concrete increased when used in combination with expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent, so the amount of AR agent decreased. The compressive strength showed the highest at $5\%$ of expansive additive, and decreased with an increase of the amount of shrinkage reducing agent. Furthermore, in order to reduce the shrinkage of high performance concrete, it was found that the using method in combination with expansive additive and shrinkage reducing agent was more effective than separately using method of that. Therefore, it analyzed that the combination of expansive additive of $5\%$ and shrinkage reduction agent of $1\%$ was the most suitable mixture, considering to the fluidity, strength and shrinkage under the condition of this experiment.

  • The present experiment was carried out to determine the effect of seed-coat softening by various chemicals, washing, chilling, and light treatment alone and in combination during desiccation of seeds on germination of gourd (Lagenaria siceraria Standl.) seeds. Potassium hydroxide, sodium hydroxide, acetone, acetonitrile, and acetamide were used as chemicals for the softening. Washing, prechilling, drying and light treatment of the softened seeds were done for a hour with tap water, for one or three weeks at 3$^{\circ}C$, 12 hr at 35$^{\circ}C$, and 14 hr a day at 3$0^{\circ}C$ with red light illumination or darkness, respectively. FR-yongjadaemok and FR-kunghap were used as test cultivars. Seed-coat softening with 10% acetone and acetonitrile for 1 hour enhanced and accelerated seed germination compared to the other chemicals and water imbibition. KOH treated for the softening was necessary to increase the germination rate of seeds for following chilling, but acetone did not influence their germinability regardless of chilling. Washing the softened seeds in tap water increased the germination rate in comparison with no-washing. During desiccation of the seeds sequentially treated with the softening, washing and chilling, red light treatment showed higher germination rate than dark one, suggesting that red light treatment are necessary during desiccation.

  • In the present study, the focus is on the analysis of carbothermal reduction of the titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder by solid carbon for the optimizing synthesis process of ultra fined TiC/Co composite powder. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was prepared by the combination of the spray drying and desalting processes using the titanium dioxide powder and cobalt nitrate as the raw materials. The titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder was mixed with carbon black, and then this mixture was carbothermally reduced under a flowing argon atmosphere. The changes in the phase structure and thermal gravity of the mixture during carbothermal reduction were analysed using XRD and TGA. The synthesized titanium-cobalt-oxygen based oxide powder has a mixture of $TiO_2$ and $CoTiO_3$. This oxide powder was transformed to a mixed state of titanium car-bide and cobalt by solid carbon through four steps of carbothermal reduction steps with increasing temperature; reduction of $CoTiO_3$ to $TiO_2$ and Co, reduction of $TiO_2$, to the magneli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3), reduction of the mag-neli phase($Ti_nO_{2n-1}$, n>3) to the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases, and reduction and carburization of the $Ti_nO_{2n-1}$(2$\leq$n$\leq$3) phases to titanium carbide.

  • Refining in papermaking plays an important role in changing fiber properties as well as paper properties. The major effects of refining on pulp fibers are internal and external fibrillation, fiber shortening, and fines formation. Many workers showed that internal fibrillation of the primary refining effects was most influential in improving paper properties. In particular, refining produces separation of fiber walls into several lamellae, thus causing fiber wall swelling with water penetration. This leads to the increase of fiber flexibility and of fiber-to-fiber contact during drying. If the fibers are very flexible, they will be drawn into close contact with each other by the force of surface tension as the water is removed during the drainage process and drying stages. In order to study the effect of fiber wall delamination on paper properties, cross-sectional image of fibers in a natural condition had to be generated without distortion. Finally, it was well recognized that confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM) could be one of the most efficient tool for creating and quantifying fiber wall delamination in combination with image analysis technique. In this study, the CLSM could be used not only to observe morphological features of transverse views of swollen fibers refined under low and high intensity, but also to investigate the sequence of fiber wall delamination and fiber wall breakage. From the CLSM images, increasing the specific energy or refining decreased the degree of fiber collapse, fiber cross-sectional area, fiber wall thickness and lumen area. High intensity refining produced more external fibrillation.

  • In this study, we first prepared 3 kinds of powders with different molecular masses from the crude protein-bound polysaccharide extract of Agraricus blazei Murill through ultrafiltration, followed by spray-drying. Then, the antitumor activities of the powders were analyzed. Size exclusion chromatography coupled with a multi-angle laser-light-scattering system showed the 3 powders had the following molecular ranges: below 10 kDa (SD-1), 10 to 150 kDa (SD-2), and above 150 kDa (SD-3), representing peak molecular weights of $8.26{\times}10^3,\;9.65{\times}10^4$, and $5.94{\times}10^6\;g/mol$, respectively. All the powders stimulated macrophage RAW264.7 cells to produce nitric oxide, of which SD-2 and SD-3 were superior to the crude extract powder (CP-SD), while SD-1 showed the lowest activity. Similar results were found for their cytotoxicities against human cancer cell lines (A549, MCF-7, and AGS), where the highest activity was obtained with the SD-2 treatment for 72 hr at $1,000\;{\mu}g/mL$. The MCF-7 cell line was less sensitive to the powders than the other cells. From this research we found that ultrafiltration, in combination with spray-drying, is applicable for preparing protein-bound polysaccharide powders with higher antitumor activities.
