  • The strong column-weak beam (SCWB) moment ratio is specified in AISC 341 to prevent an abrupt column sway in steel special moment frames (SMFs) during earthquakes. Even when the SCWB requirement is satisfied for an SMF, a column-sway can develop in the SMF. This is because the contribution of the composite beam action developed in the concrete floor slab and its supporting beams was not included while calculating the SCWB moment ratio. In this study, we developed a new method for calculating the SCWB moment ratio that included the contribution of composite beam action. We evaluated the seismic collapse performance of the SMFs considering various risk categories and building heights. We demonstrated that the collapse performance of the SMFs was significantly improved by using the proposed SCWB equation that also satisfied the target performance specified in ASCE 7.

  • The seismic design regulations have not been applied to low-rised buildings which are less than 6 stories. To evaluate the seismic strength of the low-rised building which is designed only for gravity, a theoretical and numerical analysis are peformed. In theoretical analysis, column hinge sway mechanism is assumed. For the numerical, push-over analysis is executed for 3 and 4 storied buildings. From the evaluations, the minimum base shear is found to be 0.1 g

  • The seismic performance of R/C frame structure designed for gravity load investigated in this paper. The investigation shows a satisfactory seismic performance against moderate earthquakes but column sway failure mechanism against severe earthquakes. Capacity design method is employed to redesign the R/C frame to improve seismic performance. This study provides an insight an insight into seismic upgrading methodology for medium rise R/C frame structures designed gravity load.

  • The seismic design regulations have not been applied to the low-rised buildings which are less than 6 stories in Korea. For these buildings which are designed only for gravity loads, theoretical formulas which can estimate the seismic strength of building are derived. The column hinge sway and beam hinge sway mechanism are assumed for the formulars. For the comparisons with the formulas, the results of push-over analyses of 3 and 4 storied buildings are used. It can be shown that the estimating formulas correspond well with the push-over analyses. And the seismic strength of building has a little relations with the number of bay and becomes larger as the building becomes lower. Also, as the ratio and strength of reinforcing steel increase, the seismic strength of building is increased.
