Introduction: Lung cancer is one of the most common cancers worldwide. In certain countries such as United States of America, it is the leading cause of related cancer mortality among both men and women. Natural products play an important role in overcoming the limitations of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Objectives: In this study, we investigated the antiproliferative and apoptotic activities of Kanahia laniflora methanolic extract against human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549). Methods: Sulforhodamine B colorimetric assays were used to determine the inhibitory effects of a leaf methanolic extract against A549 cells. Results: The extract showed strong cytotoxic activity against A549 cells with an $IC_{50}$ value of $0.13{\mu}g/ml$ compared to $0.21{\mu}g/ml$ for doxorubicin. The extract also significantly increased the percentage of apoptotic cells to 49.7% as compared to 1.4% and 47.4% for control and doxorubicin respectively. Conclusion: These results showed, for the first time, that a methanolic extract of Kanahia laniflora leaves can inhibit the proliferation of human non-small cell lung cancer cells (A549). Further attention to its potential as a new effective anticancer agent is warranted.
This study was performed to determine the optimum ratio of ingredients in the Sulgidduk with barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) sprout powder. A mathematical analytical tool was employed for optimization of the typical ingredients. The canonical form and trace plot showed the affect of each ingredient in the mixture against the final product. Mixture design showed 14 experimental points, including 4 replicates for three independent variables. The three independent variables selected for the experiment were: water($15{\sim}22%$), barley sprout powder($1{\sim}4%$), and sugar($12{\sim}19%$). The optimum responses variables such as color values(L, a, and b), instrumental texture parameters(hardness, gumminess, and chewiness), and sensory characteristics(appearance, color, smell, taste, softness, moistness, and overall acceptability) were evaluated. The Hunter colorimetric L- and a-values of the Sulgidduk decreased with an increasing amount of barley sprout powder. As more barley sprout powder was added, a higher b-value resulted. Textural hardness, gumminess, and chewiness were lowered by the addition of barley sprout powder. The optimum formulation obtained by both numerical and graphical methods showed similar results. The representative optimal ingredient ratio commonly obtained by both methods were: 18.2% water, 2.0% barley sprout powder, and 14.8% sugar.

The suitability of CPWs, by-products of the juice industry, was investigated as a source for the production of cosmeceuticals. Four kinds of CPWs, CW, CWE, CWER, and CWEA, were examined for their antioxidant potentials in terms of DPPH radical-scavenging ability for anti-wrinkle applications, inhibition of tyrosinase or melanin production for whitening products, and anti-inflammatory effects to treat various skin diseases such as atopic dermatitis and acne as well as for anti-bacterial activity against acne-inducing pathogens. Of the four extracts, CWER was the most potent tyrosinase inhibitor ($IC_{50}$ value: $109\;{\mu}g/mL$), and CWEA ($IC_{50}:\;167\;{\mu}g/mL$) showed good antioxidative effects. CWE and CWEA samples had dose-dependent inhibitory effects on the melanin production. The cytotoxic effects of the four CPWs were determined by colorimetric MTT assays using human keratinocyte HaCaT cells. Most extracts exhibited low cytotoxicity at $100\;{\mu}g/mL$. These results suggest CPWs are attractive candidates for topical applications on the human skin.
The cytotoxic activities of Pinellia ternate, Aconitum carmichaeli, Arisaema amurense, Aconitum kusnezoffii and Scutellaria baicalensis on monkey kidney cell (Vero) and human liver cell (WRL68) were evaluated by Sulforhodamine B Protein (SRB) and Tetrazolium-based (MTT) colorimetric assay methods The results were as fellows : 1 The Pinellia ternate and Arisaema amurense did not show the cytotoxic activities at any concentration without processing or natural drugs. 2 The extracts of Aconitum carmichaeli, Aconitum kusnezoffii and Scutellaria baicalensis showed cytotoxic activities. However, the cytotoxic activities of processing drugs were less effective than the natural drugs. 3. The cytotoxic activities on monkey kidney cell (Vero) and human liver cell (WRL68) of Aconitum carmichaeli was determined by MTT assay. The Kyungpo(京?) of Aconitum carmichaeli showed less concentrate than that of the Dangpo(唐?). The $IC_{50}$ value on monkey kidney cell (Vero) and human liver cell (WRL68) of Kyungpo was $937{\pm}29\;and\;731{\pm}31{\mu}g/ml$, respectively 4. The cytotoxicity on monkey kidney cell (Vero) and human liver cell (WRL68) of Scutellaria baicalensis showed strong activities without processing or natural drugs.
This study optimizes a suitable dyeing method for polylactic acid (PLA) fabrics using disperse dyes. For this, disperse red 60 (DR 60), disperse blue 56 (DB 56), and disperse yellow 54 (DY 54) were used and dyed on PLA fabrics dependent of dyeing temperature and time. The fastness of PLA fabrics dyed with three disperse dyes were evaluated; in addition, dye exhaustion, color strength (K/S value), and colorimetric properties of PLA fabrics were compared with PET fabrics. The experiments indicated optimum dyeability of PLA fabrics with disperse dyes. The dyeing temperature was $90^{\circ}C$ for every dye and the dyeing time were 20 min, 60 min, and 40 min for DR 60, DB 56, DY 54, respectively. PLA fabrics had good color fastness to washing, dry cleaning fastness, hot pressing fastness, rub fastness, and perspiration fastness by DR 60, DB 56, and DY 54. The dye exhaustion of PLA fabrics were lower than PET fabrics; however, K/S values were higher than PET fabrics.
This study was performed to evaluate the effect of persimmon leaves extract on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) in cultured melanoma cells. The B16/F10 melanoma cells were treated with various concentrations of t-butyl hydroperoxide (t-BHP). And also, the effect of persimmon leaves (PL) extract on the cytotoxicity mediated by t-BHP was done on the cell viability, tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis by colorimetric assays. In this study, t-BHP decreased cell viability in dose-dependent manner and XTT90 and XTT50 values were measured at 10 and 35 uM of PL, respectively in these culture. And also, XTT50 value was assessed as a highly toxic effect on cultured melanoma cells by the toxic criteria. In the effect of PL extract on the t-BHP-mediated cytotoxicity, PL extract significantly increased the cell viability injured by t-BHP in cultured B16/F10 melanoma cells. PL also showed the decreased tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis. From these results, it is suggested that ROS such as t-BHP showed highly toxic effect on cultured melanoma cells, and also, PL extract inhibited the tyrosinase activity and melanogenesis in cultured melanoma cells injured by ROS.
The goal of this study is to show that the investigate is preference of beetroot cookie is preferred by consumers and can help to replace calcium, which is depleted because of the stress. As the amount of beetroot powder is increased, pH value, spread factors, loss and leaving rates, and texture properties of cookies were decreased. As a result of the measuring of colorimetric characteristics, the values of "L", "a", "b" were all decreased as the amount of beetroot powder was increased. The cookies containing 30% of beetroot powder was estimated as the most suitable to eat because of the flavor, color, and taste of the beetroot. But cookies having 20% of beetroot powder were estimated as the best to eat because of the texture, sticking power, hardness, and general preference. According to the results, the cookies containing 20% of beetroot powder were selected as the most suitable cookies to eat.
To improve Dongchimi (watery radish kimchi) quality and preservation, 0, 3, 5, 10, and 15% of gatt (Brassica juncea; leaf mustard) per radish was added. Chemical characteristics were determined during fermentation at $10^{\circ}C$ for 45 days. Total acidity increased slowly by addition of gatt during initial fermentation period, and 15% treatment showed lowest total acidity. Total vitamin C content increased initially in all treatments depending on gatt content, and decreased thereafter. Period for reaching maximum value was delayed by addition of gatt. Highest total vitamin C was found in 15% treatments. In the case of reducing sugar, 5% treatment showed highest contents. Lactic, succinic, and tartaric acid contents consistently increased during fermentation, while those of malic and citric decreased. Turbidity and total solid contents of Dongchimi liquid increased in all treatments as fermentation proceeded, although the extent was rather suppressed by addition of gatt. Colorimetric lightness values decreased, while the initial increased and then decreased in redness and yellowness. Addition of gatt at above 15% weight level per radish accelerated fermentation at the later fermentation stage thus it should be avoided. Most changes in typical characteristics of fermentation were similar depending on treatments. More acceptable Dongchimi could be prepared by fermenting at 5% gatt concentration under given conditions.
Berberine, palmatine, and Phellodendron bark dye was prepared in methanol for HPLC-DAD-MS analysis of liquid dye. Silk was dyed using berberine, palmatine, and Phellodendron bark dye prepared in water. The dye was extracted from the dyed silk using the HCl/methanol/water (2:1:1 v/v/v) solvent system with a slight modification. The liquid dyes and the dye extracted from the silk samples dyed with the three dye sources were examined using the HPLC-DAD-MS analysis to simultaneously detect berberine and palmatine from the plant dye and the dyeings. Colorimetric measurement was carried out using a spectrophotometer to examine the color and the intensities of berberine, palmatine, and Phellodendron bark dyed silk samples. From the liquid dyes, berberine eluted at 5.21 min with the molecular cation m/z=336 and the UV spectrum confirming that the product was berberine. Palmatine eluted at 5.12 min with the molecular cation m/z=352 and the UV spectrum confirming that the product was palmatine. From the silk dyed with berberine and palmatine dye, berberine and palmatine species eluted at 5.35 min and 5.24 min, respectively. From the silk dyed with Phellodendron bark, berberine and palmatine were detected simultaneously at 5.35 min and 5.26 min, respectively. All three dyes had yellow hue while palmatine dyed silk showed the highest hue and chroma. Palmatine dyed silk showed the highest K/S value that indicated the strongest color intensity and the highest dye uptake.
The acid protease was isolated from the culture broth of the Penicillum sp. grown in the wheat bran media. 'quot; The crude purification of this enzyme was carried out by extraction with distilled water and precipitated with saturated ammonium sulfate. " The activity of this enzyme was found to be very strong by Folin′s colorimetric method. The results were as follows. 1. The optimum pH of the enzyme activity was at 3.0 and its optimum temperature was 5$0^{\circ}C$. 2. Although the enzyme activity to hydrolyze casein was maximal at 5$0^{\circ}C$, its activity decreased rapidly by about 50%, treated at 5$0^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. When treated at 4$0^{\circ}C$ for 60 min, the enzyme activity decreased to 75% of original value and did not decrease any more. 3. The enzyme was stable at pH 2.0 to 6.0. 4. This enzyme activity was not effected by metal ions; C $d^{++}$, Z $n^{++}$, $Co^{++}$, H $g^{++}$, M $n^{++}$, P $b^{++}$, $Mg^{++}$, L $i^{+}$, C $u^{++}$, $Ba^{++}$, A $g^{+}$, $Al^{+++}$, $Ca^{++}$, F $e^{++}$, and F $e^{++}$ 5. Also, it was not effected by treatemnt of EDTA.
