  • Purpose: The color of dental zirconia is very important in terms of aesthetics. To reproduce the color tone, a colorant is applied to zirconia to express the color tone. I would like to point out that the color, brightness, and saturation of the colorant used to express the color A3 may vary depending on the manufacturer. Methods: Each zirconia block received a total of 25 circular specimens for the experiment. The zirconia specimen was then deposited by colorant type to reproduce the color tone. Color differences and translucency were measured using a spectrophotometer. To compare and analyze the zirconia color according to the type of colorant, one-way ANOVA was used. Results: For each type of zirconia colorant, there was no statistically significant difference in translucency or b* (p>0.05). There was a statistical difference in L* and a* (p<0.05). Conclusion: The ΔE*ab (D65) value is less than 5.5 or less, and the color difference is within an acceptable range.

  • This paper proposes a stable and robust method to distinct the color similarity for clothes using the LBG algorithm under various light sources, Since the conventional methods, such as the histogram intersection and the accumulated histogram, are profoundly sensitive to the changing of light environments, the distinction of color similarity for the same cloth can be different due to the complicated light sources. To reduce the effects of the light sources, the properties of hue and saturation which consistently sustain the characteristic of the color under the various changes of light sources are analyzed to define the characteristic of the color distribution. In a two-dimensional space determined by the properties of hue and saturation, the LBG algorithm, a non-parametric clustering approach, is applied to examine the color distribution of images for each clothes. The color similarity of images is defined by the average of Euclidean distance between the mapping clusters which are calculated from the result of clustering of both images. To prove the stability of the proposed method, the results of the color similarity between our method and the traditional histogram analysis based methods are compared using a dozen of cloth examples that obtained under different light environments. Our method successively provides the classification between the same cloth image pair and the different cloth image pair and this classification of color similarity for clothe images obtains the 91.6% of success rate.

  • People with color vision deficiency (CVD) experience difficulties in discriminating some color combinations and color differences due to the abnormal retinal cone systems. While there exist smartphones with a re-coloring function for CVD, monitors do not provide the re-coloring function. In this paper, we propose a new re-coloring algorithm that adjusts the displayed colors for CVD using a color controller embedded in the monitor. The proposed algorithm converts the hue and saturation in HSV color space, according to the type and strength of the color deficiency. The results of the performance evaluation with a certain number of people with CVD show that the proposed system can convert colors imperceptible into perceptible.

  • This study aims to investigate the color characteristics and utilization of Amekaji fashion in the domestic casual market, with a focus on menswear. A total of 1,882 color data were extracted from 11 representative brands of Amekaji. This results of the study showed that PB, Bk, YR, and Y colors were highly utilized in the overall color, and dkg, g, ltg, and p tones were highly utilized. In particular, R color was highly utilized in the point color, as it was developed into six tones, including v, with high saturation. The analysis by the brand showed that the highest number of colors were extracted from 'Kapital', which is famous for its vintage-style patchwork and dyeing, and that 'PB' and 'Bk' were heavily utilized. By the item, PB colors were mainly utilized for denim, and shirts were diversified with 9 tones. W, a neutral color, was mainly used on clothing tops such as shirts, knits, and T-shirts. This study provides valuable insights into the color sensitivity of Amekaji fashion, which can be used as a useful resource for design development and product planning in the industry. As a future study, we suggest analysis of the utilization of Amekaji colors in the Korean men's casual market along with American and Japanese brands.

  • This paper proposes color transformation of images based on user's preference. Traditional color transformation method transforms only hue based on existing templates that define range of harmonious hue. It does not change saturation and intensity. Users would appreciate the resulting images that adjusted unnatural hue of images. Since color is closely related to peoples' emotion, we can enhance interaction of emotion-based contents and technologies. Therefore, in this paper, we define the range of color of each emotion for the transformation of color and perform the transformation of hue, saturation and intensity. However, the relationship of color and emotion depends on the culture and environment. To reflect these characteristics in color transformation, we propose the transformation of color that is based on user's preference and as a result, people would be more satisfied. We adopt interactive genetic algorithm to learn about user's preference. We surveyed the subject to analyze user's satisfaction about transformed images that are based on preference, and we found that people prefer transformed images to original images. Therefore, we conclude that people are more satisfied with the transformation of the templates which reflected user's preference than the one that did not.

  • This paper aims for developing the intelligent robot emulating human synesthetic skills which associate a color image with sound, so that we are able to build an application system based on the principle of mutual conversion between color image and sound. As the first step, in this study, we have tried to realize a basic system using the color image to sound conversion. This study describes a new conversion method to convert color image into sound, based on the likelihood in the physical frequency information between light and sound. In addition, we present the method of converting color image into sound using color model conversion as well as histograms in the converted color model. In the basis of the method proposed in this study, we built a basic system using Microsoft Visual C++(ver. 6.0). The simulation results revealed that the hue, saturation and intensity elements of a input color image were converted into F0, harmonic and octave elements of a sound, respectively. The converted sound elements were synthesized to generate a sound source with WAV file format using Csound toolkit.

  • In this paper we present a novel approach for image retrieval using color and edge information. We take into account the HSI(Hue, Saturation and Intensity) color space instead of RGB space, which emphasizes more on visual perception. In our system colors in an image are clustered into a small number of representative colors. The color feature descriptor consists of the representative colors and their percentages in the image. An improved cumulative color histogram distance measure is defined for this descriptor. And also, we have developed an efficient edge detection technique as an optional feature to our retrieval system in order to surmount the weakness of color feature. During the query processing, both the features (color, edge information) could be integrated for image retrieval as well as a standalone entity, by specifying it in a certain proportion. The content-based retrieval system is tested to be effective in terms of retrieval and scalability through experimental results and precision-recall analysis.

  • We propose a new tongue examination model according to the taste division of tongue. The proposed sytem consists of image acquisition, region segmentation, color distribution analysis and abnormality decision of tongue. Tongue DB which is classified into abnormality is constructed with tongue images captured from oriental medicine hospital inpatients. We divided 4 basic taste(bitter, sweet, salty and sour) regions and performed color distribution analysis targeting each region under HSI(Hue Saturation Intensity) color model. To minimize the influence of illumination, the histograms of H and S components only except I are utilized. The abnormality of taste regions each by comparing the proposed diagnosis model with diagnosis results by a doctor of oriental medicine. We confirmed the 87.5% of classification results of abnormality by proposed algorithm is coincide with the doctor's results.

  • This research was carried out following the preceding research on natural cellulose fabrics dyed with extract of fresh african marigold petals. Dyeability on fabrics was tested by dyeing with wool and silk which are natural protein fibers. Dyeing tests were carried out under different pH of the dye solution and mordants, examining the changes in the surface color, K/S value, and maximum absorption wavelength. The probability of improving dyeability was investigated by pre-mordanting with pre-treated chitosan. Wool fabrics showed color tone of medium or less saturation and brightness, in dark yellow color series. An orange color of high saturation was only obtained by tin mordanting. Wool showed higher K/S value than cellulose fibers. In summary, marigold dye has more affinity for protein fibers. It showed better dye effect in wool than silk. The chitosan pre-treatment and pre-mordanting lowered the K/S value of wool, which showed that chitosan pre-treatment does not improve dye uptake. However, different from the dyeing carried out by pre-mordanting without pre-treatment with chitosan, more diversified colors could be obtained by mordants. Therefore, for the dyeing natural protein fibers with marigold extract, post-mordanting does not require chitosan pre-treatment. However, pre-mordanting with chitosan pre-treatment could implement diverse colors. Considering its dyeing behaviors which are similar in both natural cellulose and protein fibers, african marigold extracts can be evaluated as a stable and highly practical dye.

  • Autonomous driving vehicle research demands complex road and lane understanding such as lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping and centering, lane change and turn assist, and driving under complex road conditions. A fast and robust road lane detection subsystem is a basic but important building block for this type of research. In this paper, we propose a method that performs road lane detection from black box input. The proposed system applies Random Sample Consensus to find the best model of road lanes passing through divided regions of the input image under HSV color model. HSV color model is chosen since it explicitly separates chromaticity and luminosity and the narrower hue distribution greatly assists in later segmentation of the frames by limiting color saturation. The implemented method was successful in lane detection on real world on-board testing, exhibiting 86.21% accuracy with 4.3% standard deviation in real time.
