  • Recently, influence of color has been expanded in various fields including design field. Among human five senses, visual sense is best for information capturing, and 80% of information judgment by visual sense is from color. Color is emotion and image. Hanbok is marked by its beautiful color combinations. The guiding principle of such color chords was Obangsaek, or the traditional Korean five base colors. The method of this study is to consider concepts of Obangsaek derived from the principles of yin-yang and the five elements and is to investigate application of Obangsaek. And the purpose of this study is to understand traditional colors and is to provide judgment criteria on various color combinations based on Korean aesthetic sense for development of textile design. The degree of nation culture depends on the level of research, analysis and application on traditional colors. Obangsaek, Korean traditional color is splendid and primary color. Also, Obangsaek has symbolic and lucky meanings. These colors are still the primary source of coloring. Obangsaek has been reinterpreted by application on textile design, some into base colors and others into diverse shades. So this study will help in the aspect of development on Korean style design.

  • The purpose of this study was to research of the symbolic meaning. of religious habit in the Korean Catholic Women's Religious Society. The research was carried out by investigating a wide range of document including those on museum of religious society, follow by considering the questionnaire and interviews on the habit. The results were as follow. The action and ceremony relation to religious habit should be expressive of evidence of Jesus, poverty and modesty, protect from external temptation, married with Jesus. External form of the religious habits should be expressive of Vergin Mary, bride of Jesus, york of Jesus, the Sacrament, atonement, innocenc, eternity, confirm one's determination, poverty, rasario, adversity. Symbolic meaning in external form of the religious habit was expressed more definitly, varietly than action and ceremony relation to religious habit by well designed item, detail, color and accessory of habits. All over the world religious societies allowing ordinary clothes but most korean women's religious societies still hold on religious habit. Present style is very simplyfied than the traditional one. But many religious societies make efforts for keeping the symbolic meaning of religious habit.

  • Traditional costumes have evolved while reflecting the social, cultural and psychological values of the era. Costumes gain meaning by being worn that also allows their various symbolic meanings to be derived. Costumes worn in festivals by specific societies and organizations have especially apparent symbolism pertaining to their purpose. Most countries have traditional festivals that embody the country's distinct culture, history and traditions. These festivals are acts of consciousness expressing a special meaning of the community. Costumes represent a glimpse of life and culture during a festival period; in addition, the costume's style, color elements and decorations are expressions of community values and a distinct symbolic mechanism. Totemism (a significant element of these festivals) has been passed down for many generations. The current costumes for Totemism are distinct (compared to normal festival costumes) and embody a more symbolic meaning. This study deduces the exaggerated style, the concealment and disguise of the human body, and the pursuit of pleasure expressed in the Totemism costumes of regional European festivals. The symbolization theories of C. G. Jung and an analysis of Totemism costumes allow an understanding of their existential significance, their role as the medium between consciousness and unconsciousness, their meaning of symbolic transcendental unity, and their meaning of giving consciousness to the mind.

The Impression of on Korean Catholic Priest's Ritual Dress (가톨릭 사제복식에 대한 인상형성 연구)

  • The purpose of the present study was to identify the effect of ritual dress on korean catholic priest's impression. The subject consisted of 415 undergraduated students. The experimental materials developed for this study were 3 type color photographs stimuli of catholic priest model and 7-point sementic differential scale composed of 49 bipolar adjectives representing personal traits. The data were analyzed by factor analysis. the major findings drawn from this study were as follows : Four factors emerged to account for the dimentional structure of the impression of each dress style. Four factors were titled as open-hearted mind symbolic meaning nature of priest potency. The open-hearted mind factor was the largest throughout the 3types ritual dress. Casula had a positive effect on open-hearted mind nature of prist and negative on symbolic meaning potency. Sutan had a positive effect on open-hearted mind potency nature of priest and negative on symbolic meaning. Black suit with roman collar had a positive effect on open-hearted mind symbolic meaning nature of prist and negative on potency, Therefore the ritual dress had significant effect on korean catholic priest' impressin of open-hearted mind symbolic meaning nature of prist activity and potency

  • Expression of color in national animation often delivered vaguely. This study will make up for vaguely meaning in terms of expression in color. And this study is intend to look the strategy and error of color in regional animation. This study is intend to arrange the situation of synesthesia effect of color which is applied as a keyword 'light' of Gwang-ju's image. Moreover, There is a bit difficulty in using synesthesia of color, but the use possibility is full of suggestions. Therefore, For regional animation, this study intend that in order to establish a new regional specialized animation, appropriateness of synesthesia effect of color in based animation is inspected and then the potential is emphasized.

A Study on the Characteristics of Rainbow Colors and Rainbow Fashion Images (무지개 색의 특성과 복식으로 전달되는 이미지)

  • The rainbow has been considered as a perfect representative of color harmony in nature. In this study rainbow's colors include seven spectral colors and changeable colors according to observational angle. This study performed a bibliographical inquiry into rainbow colors and the survey research for classification of rainbow color images in fashion design. First, a bibliographical inquiry includes the definition of rainbow colors, physical formation principles of the rainbow, and its aesthetical attributes and symbolism. Second, this survey classifies rainbow color images in fashion design. The results of this study are as follows: 1. The rainbow was the religious and symbolic object before 17th century, and after that period, the rainbow became an aesthetical object. The main symbolic meanings are similar in eastern and western culture: temporary bridge between two world, divine nature, hope/beauty/richness, war/ death/flood/drought. 2. This survey shows that 6 main factors of rainbow color images in fashion design are 'vigorous', 'colorful'. 'fairy', 'fresh', 'mysterious', 'brilliant'. Rainbow color image in fashion design shows past and futuristic image at the same time. The purpose of this study is to systematized the images theoretical bases which are applied to color expression and of rainbow colors and to find out the development about rainbow theme by designers.

Construction of Confusion Lines for Color Vision Deficiency and Verification by Ishihara Chart

  • This paper proposes color databases that can be used for various purposes for people with a color vision deficiency (CVD). The purpose of this paper is to group colors within the sRGB gamut into the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ color space using the Brettel algorithm to simulate the representative colors of each group into colors visible to people with a CVD, and to establish a confusion line database by comparing colors that might cause confusion for people with different types of color vision deficiency. The validity of the established confusion lines were verified by using an Ishihara chart. The different colors that confuse those with a CVD in an Ishihara chart are located in the same confusion line database for both protanopia and deutanopia. Instead of the 3D RGB color space, we have grouped confusion colors to the CIE $L^*a^*b^*$ space coordinates in a more distinctive and intuitive manner, and can establish a database of colors that can be perceived by people with a CVD more accurately.   • As all other cultures do, in the background of color of costume, view of life or spirit are contained in the nature or environment that the people lived in are applied. Marring is the ceremony to be socially recognized that both of sexes are unified, assist ancestor and bear future generation. Meaning and symbolism of color are appeared in beauty and organic composition of Lee dynasty. This paper tried to dear up five colors are dean, beautiful and philosophical colors rather than awkward composition of colors through surveying character of five colors appeared in Korean traditional wedding dress that has been succeeded in present age. This paper compared Korean traditional wedding dress and "Dan-chung" of Korea, Japan and China and surveyed theoretical background of Korean traditional color to find character of color appeared in Korean traditional wedding dress. As a result, Korean traditional color is meaningful symbolic color, its origin starts in yin-yang and the live elements of the Oriental cosmogony and it is related with Taoism of Confucianism and color of "Dan-chung." Five colors of yin-yang means everything under the sun and il is the color achieving beauty of balance due to correlation when it is linked to over one color. Further, it contains nature worship and human dignity, prays happiness and gives the significance of "Buksa", meaning of expelling an evil spirit. Formative beauty praying that all creatures are harmonized while human is happy and escapes from uncertainty is the beauty pursuing mental satisfaction as well as visual satisfaction. In future, the creational and characteristic designs that can appeal to world are required through right understanding and study of the beauty of traditional culture beauty of traditional culture

Comparison on Color Preference of BRICs Consumers (BRICs 지역 소비자 색채선호 비교)

  • Color is one of the most effective factor in visual aspect influencing consumer's choice. However, the color preference varies as time passes, society changes, new culture develops, that is variable in its nature. And the underlying meaning or accompanying color image differs in every area. We believe the study on the color preference is meaningful, especially on BRICs market, recently gathering attentions for their market competitiveness and growth potential. For this research, data collected from 5 countries(including Korea) by 1:1 interview during 3 weeks in Aug. 2005. Usable data from 923 adult urban residents were used for final data analysis. Color chart for research was categorized by using COS Color System into KS standard color 10grades plus 1 neutral, with 5 grades of tones. Through this empirical study, the data were analyzed by mean, ANOVA, Duncan-test of SPSS Win(ver.10.0). The result generated from this study are as follows : First, analysis through hue & tone system reveals that preference on principle colors (R, Y, G, B, P) is higher than intermediate colors and pale, light, vivid tones were preferred to dare and deep tones. Second, personal color preference is reflected in color preference in fashion items. Thus, we may conclude color preference in fashion item largely influenced by country characteristics. Third, biggest difference by country from hue analysis are neutral and PB colors. Neutral, widely preferred color in every county, more preferred in India, Russia, Brazil than China. We expect this result can be utilized as a basic material for developing BRICs market.

Characteristics of Neon Color in Modern Fashion (현대 패션에 나타난 네온컬러의 특성)

  • The purpose of this study is to set up the theoretical foundation for neon colors by recognizing them as important elements of sensitive design and by comprehending their existence as a color fashion responsive to psychological and social background. As the subject of the present the researcher has selected important oversea collections of these five years during which neon colors have fully emerged as popular colors of fashion. The procedure of research was to examine the concept and traits of colors and investigate the utility of neon colors in various fields. The important facts which are acquired from the present study are as follows. First, the analysis of frequency has found out the following color arrangements: neon color only-8.6%(35), neon color+colorless-58.3%(236), neon color+ colored -14.8%(60),neon color+colorless+colored-18.3%(74), and others. The case of neon color used as monochromatic (color) was distinguished into two: single neon color all through and the same color used differently. Color arrangements were divided into analogous arrangement, separation arrangement, dominant arrangement, multi-color arrangement, and accent arrangement. Second, the internal significance of neon colors expressed in fashion can be interpreted into three: emphasis, optical Illusion, and amusing. This study has attempted to raised up the aesthetic value of various color expression and to expand fashion image by interpreting the trends of color fashion together with the traits and aesthetic meaning of color in fashion. The future study intends to expand the expression area of fashion design and to interpret molding beauty through the image of color arrangement and through fashion style utilizing neon colors.
